chris r Posted April 22 Author Posted April 22 Went to Wellington and did Wagon stuff Averaged 10.4 litres per 100k for the whole trip which I'm happy with. It's so comfortable for long trips almost feels like business class ha. Picked up a diesel compression tester for the musso so will check that next 4 Quote
chris r Posted April 23 Author Posted April 23 No1 glow plug is doing what it should Results are in 1 - 80 2 - 300 3 - 280 4 - 280 5 - 280 Lifters are all holding pressure. I'll attempt to clean them as per this video Couldn't get past step one no matter how hard I smacked it against some wood. Figured I'd try soak the old oil out And try step 1 again Nope. 1 Quote
chris r Posted April 23 Author Posted April 23 Reassembled it Same deal Probably has been the low power issue the whole time. Put the intake manifold back on and took it for a drive Now I know number 1 intake valve isn't sealing and probably wasn't the whole time I can ignore it and keep driving it until I can be bothered to pull the head 5 1 Quote
chris r Posted April 23 Author Posted April 23 It's survived running for 3 hours so I pronounce good enough to daily in traffic. Mrs said it goes hard for what it is now so that's a seal of approval 7 Quote
chris r Posted April 23 Author Posted April 23 It's the intake valve for sure, didn't have any diesel handy so put some oil in the port when I was Fucking around with the lifters. I was hoping the lifters had pumped up or been full of schmutz and holding the valve open a bit but no That's after about 30 mins Quote
shrike Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Just add more boost? That sucks any idea what could be causing it to not seal? Anything you can check before ripping the head off? Quote
chris r Posted April 23 Author Posted April 23 I ordered a alix boost tap so will install that at some point along with boost gauge. I've poked my borescope down and seen everything I can but nothing obviously fucked I could move both intake and exhaust valves by pushing down (with a bit of effort) so they aren't bent enough not to move but still could be bent enough not to seal. I was half thinking about shoving a small plate on no1 port so it doesn't chuff back out and choke the other cylinders but it'd probably do dumb things as its still injecting fuel on that cylinder 1 Quote
chris r Posted April 24 Author Posted April 24 Because I'm a sucker for punishment and a bit dumb I dropped the musso off for a wof check this morning. Failed but where's the fun in owning something reliable... Yeah that's fucked Now to try and find one in stock or available to buy in nz. I've found a bush in Latvia but don't know if it'll arrive in time for a recheck. I've left the bush with the local bnt so hopefully they can magic something up 5 Quote
chris r Posted April 24 Author Posted April 24 After a look on carjam it's one of 69 (heh) registered musso in nz so not exactly a common vehicle for anyone to stock parts for. I've found another bush in Malaysia so might be a bit quicker to ship than Latvia but am waiting to hear back from the shop about it Edit Malaysia shop has the correct bush in stock, shipping is 3 times the cost of the bush but its DHL express so should be here in time for wof recheck. Will see what BNT come up with tomorrow Quote
Bearded Baldy Posted April 25 Posted April 25 Measure the bush up compare to hiace and prado. Superpro website i think has the best search by size. 1 1 Quote
chris r Posted April 25 Author Posted April 25 Thanks! Bush is with bnt who seemed to care /give a shit so I'll find out how they got on tomorrow /Monday 1 Quote

That was my suggestion too, also to try BNT but be prepared to spend ages comparing it etc. Or turn a pair of shells from aluminium and solid mount the thing ha 1 Quote
Bearded Baldy Posted April 25 Posted April 25 I would not enjoy that argument.... Aluminium is not a urethane bush so technically doesn't need voids, but the original bush was designed to flex, which aluminium doesn't. I would be inclined to fail it myself, while admiring the ingenuity. However a few wraps of self amalgating tape around the rack under the bush, removes play and does allow flex, also does covers the 'no heating or welding of components'. Not that i would ever suggest you do such a thing in the interim and fit the new bushes later. 5 Quote
chris r Posted April 27 Author Posted April 27 I was thinking about packing it out to reduce the slop, I think some of why the inspector failed it is the visual condition of the bush too which is fair enough. Also I'm feeling lazy and don't want to drop the whole rack to pack it out and replace the bush, I'm hoping to be able to just squeeze the new bush in without removing the rack. I'll call bnt tomorrow lunch ish and see how they got on. If no luck then I'll get the Malaysia one sent over and refit the worn one for now. https://www.w124performance.com/service/Index/602_603/05Engine.htm I'll leave this link so I can find it again for service manual stuff for the head as the ssangyong manual I found isn't as detailed 1 Quote
chris r Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 In was having a think over the weekend and came up with a barry theory that possibly the valve spring on no1 could be weak and that's why the compression is escaping. It's probably bullshit and I'm firmly in denial but valve springs are cheaper and easier than pulling the head off. The mercedes om602 is similar to the ssangyong om662 so there is a lot of barry posts about the 602. Om602 springs are discontinued or hard to source. I found a couple of posts saying the petrol M103 has the same spring seat and retainer as the om602. The spring is 1mm thicker and is a bit stiffer so is a easy upgrade. I've found a couple of springs in nz for a reasonable price so have two on the way. Best case it fixes no 1 and I order 8 more. Worst case I'll order 8 more and a head set and pull the head 1 Quote
Doug Hill Posted April 28 Posted April 28 My $5 is the valve/seat is all garbage from eating intake schmooze. 2 Quote
chris r Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 Yeah it most likely is the issue. Upgraded valve springs were always going to be part of plan but just not this early O̶r̶ i̶n̶ t̶h̶i̶s̶ v̶e̶h̶i̶c̶l̶e̶ Quote

chris r Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 I've scrubbed what I can off the valve with a toothbrush, 91, carb cleaner, Brake clean and most of a can of diesel intake and valve cleaner. Once it was all back together fed it the rest of the can of valve cleaner stuff. It's about as clean as I can get it with the motor assembled. I though about getting it walnut blasted but that costs about the same as a set of head bolts and gasket set with no guarantee it'll fix the issue. 3 Quote
