I've been making good progress anyway. 
I have got the heads off and finished porting them. 
Start putting it all back together tomorrow hopefully.
It had 4x bent intake valves as well, but luckily I've got plenty of spare parts from previous disasters. haha.

Havw you considered a small electric oil pump to provide higher oil pressure to the vvti?

There's not really any point doing anything to fix the low rpm VVT stuff, because its only a problem below say 1200 or 1500rpm. 

After that I can advance the cam. 

Not worth compromising the whole rest of the engine's operation to pander to a slightly lower idle.

With the GPS logging are you looking to end up with a csv export for video overlays and data review or to tinker with it inside the link logging software. As I wonder if there is a cleaner solution that gets you where you need to be.

Maybe something like the realdash app could collect all the data? 

For example I have the tunerview app which takes a few parameters from my obd1 ecu and adds gps and g sensor from my garbage huawei phone with a broken screen which I use for my data embedded hillclimb videos. 

I should have a bunch of csv files if you want to see how they look. Although they won't be a super high resolution.

 

Also thanks for the motivation on the cluster, I've been trying to figure out what to do with my cable driven speedo and didn't really want to unnecessarily got to a race dash.. I'd totally overlooked the nb mx5 cluster (which is electronic speedo) for some reason, so that's my new plan.

I've taken a different approach. I spent ages looking for a clean solution where I didn't have to code my own... 

I've picked up a RaceCapture/Track (mk4, https://www.autosportlabs.com/product/racecapture-track-real-time-motorsports-telemetry-system/) which connects via canbus to the ecu (it also has canbus out), so it has the GPS and lap timing and can get all the data from the ecu and combine to then output on a digital dash via the race capture app (android, ios, windows). Or livestream it all back to Podium (cloud).

Untested as currently still sitting in box awaiting other things to be done, and obviously not cheap, but it's something I don't want to be maintaining.

Im not fussed about video overlays, I just want all the data in one place.

But also show splits and laptimes on my dash cluster.

Which will be the hardware that handles the gps as well. 

Im happy to spend some time on these kind of projects. As meaningfully integrating AI into something that has a finished result. Is a good skillset for staying relevant in my career and keeping future options open. 

Have to move with the times or become a dinosaur.

Funnily enough a big part of what landed me my current job. Was showing them my digidash project that I was working on at the time.

I dont have any formal qualifications so things like this are helpful to me in the bigger scheme outside of car stuff.

I just finished watching a might car mods where they put a Z pipe in to improve the sound, have you seen these / considered them?

Looked at some prices and they made my eyes water, but could be worth copying the concept and seeing if your 3D printing comes out cheaper?

It's not really any benefit over a traditional X pipe in terms of sound/power. 

They'll have just been sponsored one for free, there's no way they'd actually buy it haha.

This 2GR sounds awesome though! 

So yeah... definitely can be done.
But this car must be brain meltingly loud. no mufflers etc.
