I will be happy just to lay down a few passes and come home with a non broken car to be honest.
Takes a bit of trial and error / experience to dial everything in and get good times.
Not expecting any miracles from it.
As it sits (sat) with factory cams, probably still slower quarter mile than the echo's best.

I'm sure its going to be a lot more usable across more racing your into than the Echo though, it'll probably tow a trailer way better than the echo did and look cooler doing it all.

Carina looks cooler sure.
But its quite disturbing how good the echo actually was at a whole lot of things.
I think the only way this car will be quicker is straight line speed.
The echo had nearly the same wheelbase, but zero weight hanging over each end.
It turned into corners way way better and felt a lot more settled and stable overall.
Then Carina weighs 25% more, and things like having the gas tank hang way over the back axle. and a lot of weight forward of the front wheels (comparatively)
Makes a crazy difference to how it feels cornering braking etc.
This will be heaps of fun but ultimately it's one of the cars that the Echo probably would have passed as well. Haha.

But, having the Carina running, and with lots of rpm is the thought that puts a big grin on my face.
As I got older, the more I realize that maximizing the driving experience, and having the fastest possible car can be two very different things.
My daily driver/tow car might be faster than the carina overall too, while using half as much gas, half the noise, etc etc. I'm 100% fine with that

2GR Echo time

OOoooofffffff, imagine a FWD 2GR set up slapped in the back of an echo, oh my.

Driving the front wheels from a rear/mid mounted engine is a bold call but I like it.

Also, welcome to the build ethos of my red car tbh. It's not fast like KPRs. It's not low like Matts. But it hit the brief right on the nose.

need more of a challenge to bring me out of retirement.

Seems like cam manufacturers are winging it to a point. but guess they have to call it somewhere on the r&d,  else would be some expensive cams they would never sell
Can the vvti pulleys be modified at all?  either limiter or modified for more travel.   if there is another 10 degrees intake advance you can gain before minimum clearance, likely worth doing.
easy enough to  find out with some testing on what you have now though, if still gaining when coming up to max advance.

Take the seemingly worldwide advice and install some bags of concrete in strategic places to cancel other 'BAD WEIGHT'

You have a lathe, welder and old factory cams right? considered doing some regrinds to dial in the perfect cam sizing 😛

Yeah the pulleys can be modified, I'll likely go down this road at some point.
It's a huge amount of work though.
For now, I just want to get everything together and then see how it goes.
Like you say, see what sort of range it likes then make some decisions.

I'm happy to have some more iterative development as time goes on.

But my patience for having the car garage bound is currently at all time lows!
