Roman Posted August 13, 2024 Author Posted August 13, 2024 Yeah 100% A lot of the vitz bolt on supercharger kits are non intercooled, and a similar design to SCs I think... they run so damn hot that they end up making about the same power as a standard motor haha. They absolutely fly once a water meth setup is added, but it's a whole lot nicer and easier to just have a good intercooler on it. Quote
HighLUX Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Id toyed with the idea of water meth but it just ends up being a hassle/worry that your boosting round and on your last 100ml of meth juice before you run dry and the intake temps head towards the sun/boom 2 Quote
Roman Posted August 13, 2024 Author Posted August 13, 2024 Yeah agree. Im sure there is many an engine that has gone boom when the water ran out. Just another cause of engine anxiety! Quote
shrike Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Its a shame the Whipple AX100 and AX140 are so expensive in comparison to a turbo, though a few good results with k24's Eaton M90's and M62's seem to be around but not the super easy to package onto a motor Quote
GARDRB Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Having had an SC14 4agze the only engine I would ever consider using a roots blower on again (other than something dumb like a 4k) is a v6 or v8 that doesn’t have room for a turbo. Using the crank to drive a heat pump and dealing with belt failures and belt slip and belt ejection when you’ve got all that heat energy being wasted coming out the exhaust that could be spinning a turbo seems counterintuitive to me. I appreciate the nostalgia of what Matt is building, but turbos are so much simpler and better developed. Now who is gonna be the first on oldschool to print a turbo manifold? 2 Quote

But results are amazing! 2 Quote

If you could go a shorter snout, get rid of A/C & PS. Moved the Alternator to the exhaust side and went Electric waterpump. Made a custom Manifold that was opposite intake side and higher, I think you could run the Supercharger lower down right next to the block and then run a front mount for it Definitely a big job and not straight forward, looks alot of fun however :p I had seen the https://nzhondas.com/topic/183910-k24k20-dc5-m90-what-could-go-wrong/ Before but didn't realize it was yours :p 1 1 Quote

Rhyscar Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 @shrike not mine, but was an interesting fabrication job nonetheless! The manifold I welded up turned to poo's and I think they re-did it in steel later on. I wonder where the car is now. So the story goes that we were doing some spirited driving in the south Waikato and there was a moment where I had to choose between maybe not making a corner, a powerpole, letterbox and a fence. Somehow managed to park it somewhere between all those with the aid of the handbrake, but did a little sill damage in the process. And since I had more time than money back then, and always want to do what's right for friends, I helped Murray out with all the fabrication for the supercharger. It was also a pretty interesting project which was great to be involved in. God it went like stink. 6 1 2 Quote
h4nd Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 You could run your alt off the driveshaft; if you're parked up, you can throw a charger at it. It'd be interesting to see how wide a speed range the reg would cope with. Or off a cam shaft? (out the front, up high?) or roll the belt over pulleys and yoink it out sideways? 1 Quote
Roman Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 @h4nd Seems like a belt slip nightmare. Same belt has to run the waterpump, so not keen on any risks. Will just make the manifold work around it. As per the Echo having your day ended because of alternator or waterpump problems is a whole bunch of no fun. 2 Quote

Vintage Grumble Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 This made me think of the project binky bendy driveshaft thing. And that they are waaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue for a new episode. Edit: It's been over a fucken year! 1 Quote
thegreatestben Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Pretty sure they said the first one of those they had made shat itself in quick order and it was horrendously dear. Quote

BiTurbo228 Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I don't suppose there's space to sneak a belt behind the dipstick and have it sitting opposite the oil filter? Quote
Roman Posted August 24, 2024 Author Posted August 24, 2024 For now I think I'll just leave the alternator where it is and work around it. Relocating alternator can maybe be a future-Dave scope creep activity. Once I've got a 2nd engine and some garage space I'll do some scheming. Looking at my manifold on the drivers side, I keep wondering if it's long enough... seems short. Think it's something like 980mm per runner, give or take. But then looking at how far back I'd have to run the manifold on this side if they go straight back, it's huge haha. What I'm currently thinking is that I'll try take up as much space as possible still in the engine bay by running the first pipe as far foward and down as I can. Then the second pipe can sit on top, so the third pipe can extend out further so it can run past the other two to make up the length. But I've run out of straight sections so will need to order some more. Bend #2 might need to get a bit wiggly to get enough length in it. 4 Quote
