Dial indicator recommendations

Workmate needs to buy a dial indicator to set up end float on his Volvo diff - any recommendations on brands?

Can't go wrong with a starret

Bigger the range the better. Bastard setting cams up with a short lift DTI. Bigger the magnetic base the better too.

Not a lot of crap on the market now. General standard is quite good.

For a one off setting up a diff, anything will do the job.

If you're doing it often / flying to the moon, Starret or Mitutoyo

Dad got one of aliexpress that looked like mitotuyo.

Upon closer inspection it said mitutoygo

I got a mag base, a finger dti and plunger dti off aliexpress. The variable adjust mag base was actually pretty good. Plunger dti also good for the price but the finger one was a heap o crap. Notchy in travel and didnt always return to centre. prob ok for checking runout but i wouldnt use for precise measurement or zeroing job on cnc.

I got a Vertex indicator and matching mag base, it's no Mitutoyo, but it's more than good enough for setting up a diff and my fucking about on my lathe.
