Is that running a big boy cam or is it just running like shit?

It's running like shit because its fouling plugs from only ever having short cold starts and never being run to temp.

First time its moved under its own power in about 25 years, since I got it running its only been run a few times in the garage and never been run to temp. I'll clean the plugs before running it next.

Too late now, but I reckon citric acid would have worked on those steel wheels. Citric acid is cheap, you get it in powder form. I think I got my on trademe. A big bulk bag, not the teeny pots used for making food things.

Or electrolysis would be safer, no chance of leaving it in too long. Also cheap.

In both cases you need a plastic thing you can submerge a wheel in. Then you give them a rinse and wipe with a scourer pad. Nice clean metal, until it dries and immediately flash rusts.

i did leave the worst one in Evaporust for about a week, but it was quite slow and the rust on the inside of the bead is quite bad on some. I dont have anything big enough for the whole wheel so had to do it in sections. I will still clean the original wheels up at some point, but the priority was getting the car rolling.

That's a mint looking wagon. Does it still exist?

I'm a firm believer the Marina is a very under-rated and underappreciated car. They aren't perfect, but they weren't made to be.

I'll always have great memories of gravel roading my first one too.

Yeah still wof an reg somewhere.

I sold it about 5 years ago

The tail gate on the wagons weights about 120kg so balances the car out well so they handle.

Mine also had the sway bar and sump guard from a mk3 fitted to tighten the front end up. Used to handle pretty good for lever arm shocks up front still haha

Have you tried backflushing the radiator? My Gloria when I got that had been sitting for 15 years or so, I think it ended up getting backflushed for about 40min before the water ran clear

The other thing you can do it put a cup of soda washing crystals in it, run it for awhile and then dump it out.

Also I think Griffiths Equipment based in Auckland sell reproduction centrecaps for the Aungers..

Yeah plan is to backflush and see how it goes. The top radiator pipe rusted from the inside out, so had to fish a bunch of rust chunks out before i replaced with the correct hose.

I have three of the four center caps, and they appear to be "performance" brand from Aus. Not sure if they will go back on, not sold on the look of the caps tbh.

@kws please accept my humble apologies for not getting back to you re marina bumpstops, I had a cursory look and can guarantee I have at least one. I see you may be in need of some other bits & pieces, I'm in putaruru (south waikato) and you would be more than welcome to have a sift through my assortment of marina parts if its not too far from home for you - save my next of kin from some of the hassle of dumping them someday. from rough memory I have 4 front doors, 2 of which are in great cond with black mk3 cards, maybe a whole mk3 diff/spring assy and driveshaft? A decent looking radiator, mk3 bumpers? lots of headlights including a pair of 7" lucas spotlights with lucas covers which would look great on your coupe, knowing lucas they probably put out 0.5 lumens, providing they still contain the vital smoke. Plus multiple bins of random crap/treasure - all sorts of small parts, mainly from mk3 wagon or mk2 commercial.

Another great write-up and pics. Interesting to see closely what they did to the Minor suspension design. They managed to replace one threaded trunnion with a ball joint, but it's usually the bottom one that gives the most trouble anyway as it's more prone to getting rusty/water into it.

I'm enjoying this rescue you have.
hope you don't mind my sharn below.

My uncle had a 4cyl 4 door manual (Melbourne AU) about 20yrs ago, he loved it as a daily driver.(used to run on the smell of an oily rag) i don't remember what happened to it but he bought a 6cyl one for parts  and just ended up driving that one instead even though it drank heaps of fuel by comparison.

i once saw one(originally a 4cyl) with a rover 3.5 V8 fitted, the owner said all he needed to do was make engine mounts as the auto trans was same type as the marina 4cyl. was looking to change the diff for a better ratio though. it was still registered as a 4cyl though. no idea if 6cyl brakes and diff were better suited.

Bw35?

Of course, pretty much the only non-GM option in Aussie, England or South Africa at the time. Standard in the Rover 3500, Leyland P76 and all flavours of Marina.

The Aussie Marina also had the same Borg Warner Model 68 diff as the Aussie Datsun 1200, Toyota Corolla and Ford Escort.  All part of the local content requirements.
