davidian
any ideas what size and thread nut these run? Tried M12 - too small, M14 - too big, 1/2'' UNF - too small, 9/16 UNF too big... Steelmasters don't have anything that fits (first time ever). Any ideas before I take the grinder out would be highly appreciated.
Adoom
Is it 1/2" Whitworth? Slightly larger than 1/2" UNF.
tortron
try 1/2" unc? doubtful its witworth, mk2s went metric
Mof
UNC is coarse? The end of the stud doesn't look so good
tortron
yes its coarse. put a thread gauge on it and measure tpi if you want to be sure
davidian
@torton after trawling the shit out of forums, Ive found references to MK1 originally being imperial (mine is '68 - first year), then the Mk2s went metric, so not the same apparently. I've had a thread guage onit and it was close/same as a 1.25 so Id say not UNC...
tortron
Probably you have mk2 parts and it's 1.25 12mm
davidian
why don't my M12 1.25 nuts work then?
Bling
Could be damaged thread as Mof mentioned? Maybe give it a tickle up with a file. Sit a m12 1.25 bolt next to that thread and see how it lines up.
tortron
Yeah it will be cos the end is damaged that nothing fits
davidian
your kind responses are not helpful sorry. I have tried both sides and I have measured both with digital verniers. M12 is SMALLER cheers
tortron
What is your measurement from the caliper From the tpi, if it's not metric it's probably unf which is pretty close to 1.25. it wouldn't be whitworth as it would be the wrong tpi for that size
kyteler
It's not simply M13 is it? Because the British are fuck wits. I imagine you'll be able to get the nuts from an escort specialist but I would ponder whether you could die it down to M12 at a similar pitch. We are all just throwing darts at a board hoping to hit the bullseye with the details provided.
Raizer
5/16 UNC for MK1, 12mm for MK2. Edit: that's coming from a UK Ford forum, but yeah thinking about it that's too small, the poster there seems to have put the size of the top shock nut for mk1 ha.
Valiant
Sounds and looks like 1/2unf with a damaged lead in to the thread. Mk1 was imperial threaded. Have you got die nut you can tidy that thread up with?
anglia4
1/2" UNF = 20 TPI 1.25mm pitch = 20.3 TPI If M12 is too small, but the thread measures very close to 1.25mm pitch, I would hazard a fair guess that its 1/2" UNF with a damaged thread. If your caliper measurement was anywhere near 12.7mm then yeah, bullseye.
davidian
cheers to you all lads, I will clean up the thread an try the 1/2UNF again. To my eye, both M12 and 1/2 were just a shade not big enough on the ID to fit over the thread, whereas 14 and 9/16 slid over the top. @kyteler I'd love to try a M13 but no one stocks them (as in steelmasters, AES, blacks etc.) worse comes to worse the grinder will come out, replace stud with a bolt + sleeve and done, just wary of welding anything suspension wise (altho original has welds in it)
kyteler
Not something Palmside sells? Or some other Brit Escort specialist site?
