Tomble's 1983 Starion GSR-X fumbling / hand-holding / discussion

I found a guy on marketplace with a $100 starion turbo already but if that falls through I will totally hit youses up. Teaches me to not hit the old school hive mind first.

My current plan is

  1. keep stripping the block down, see if anything gets worse
  2. give it all a clean
  3. bring the block and rotating assy to engine people and see what they think
  4. if it's all a go, apparently the genuine gasket set can be made to order ex japan, but the lead time is 24 weeks, and might not actually go through. There are some other aftermarket full engine kits I've seen from Ajusa and Endurote, the brands seem to be well regarded, so might do that instead, we'll see.

@kws is not confident that those bores can be honed out so might need some oversized pistons too... but we'll find out at step #3

I fully understand the scope creep. I was going to clean up and send the engine in the Fiat, but the more I looked, the worse it got. She got a full (budget) rebuild, no regerts!

Bonjour. Si vous envisagez de refaire le moteur, il y a une chose à vérifier en premier : trouver les segments de piston. Ces pistons n'ont été produits que pendant un an, et les segments sont difficiles à trouver.

All the g63b goodness you could want. And g64b etc.

Wife will be heading to porirua in a couple of weeks if you want to collect from her.

Only rule is i want it back eventually.

I couldn't see whether you had tested or were planning to test the injectors. I would suggest it worthwhile - back in the day I had a 12 valve DASH 4G63, with a similar-ish setup. I had a spare intake/glorified carb, and of the 4 injectors I had, 1 was dead and the other 3 were pretty ropey and needed a thorough cleaning.

I totally planned to before reassembly but just got into the flow of things. I will still make sure it all tests OK before it goes back on the car. The injector section is easy to remove and put in a jar or whatever

Im still amazed the bores cleaned up so well, they looked worse than my Alto ones.

Couple of pro-tips - If you have a flatbed scanner, you can chuck a flat thing like that throttlebody on it and scan the flange to get a perfect copy of the gasket. Print it out, cut it out of gasket paper, job done.

Second, one of the reasons you might've been struggling with the Phillips screws, is they probably werent Phillips but JIS instead. They will usually have a little dot on the head to indicate they are. JIS drivers are worth their weight in gold for old JDM stuff.

Those newer bolts look like later model bolts. Reusing the old ones should be fine, they are not torque to yeild, havn't been heat cycled, I have reused them on plenty of 4g63s with no problems

I hope you didn't discard those original bolts because they sure as heck aren't one time use bolts. Heck if you even had the original original head bolts, you didn't even need to replace them with new ones to be honest. Only once they started going to the narrower 11mm shank with the 12 point heads, is when they were stretch bolts. Anything with the OG 8 or 10mm hex head, including 6G7x engines right through to the 2010's, still uses reusable head bolts. Just make sure you measure the length to make sure they haven't stretched, and are the correct ones in case they get mixed up. early 4G6x head bolts are a few mm longer than 6G7x head bolts but otherwise look identical.

Oh thank fuck. I just bought a new set but haven't broken the seal so can return them.

I had actually compared the old bolts against each other and they looked ok, just blindly accepted "never re-use head bolts".

What length should I expect when measuring them, and what torque specs should I use?
