ThePog
Any of youse knowledgeable about bolting a turbo onto a diesel NA 80 series land cruiser? My sis has a majestic shitbox nearing 500,000k and it runs sweet as a nut, manual as well. We had a talk about boosting it to 1hdt spec using factory stuff but I am not sure how well it would take it or of there were significant differences between the NA and turbo versions. Whatcha got for me?
jessemk2
You mean 1hz? Piston tops on the 1hz are bit thin so will fail with to much boost 1hz+t you dont really go past 5-6 psi to keep them semi reliable Think safari used to do a bolt on turbo kit They are pretty slow so any boost gona help
Yowzer
Nah, 80 series has NA 1HDs in them. Couldn't tell ya what the difference is between the two but I'd slap a turbo on it and send it and assume the best.
ThePog
Fuck I just assumed it was a 1hd, I will carjam it and find out
jessemk2
Hmmm All the factory non turbo diesel 80s ive seen have been 1hz
ThePog
It's a 1hz.
Yowzer
Oh bummer. Yeah, probably not worth boosting soz. Not without whipping in some better internals anyway.
ThePog
Yea probably not. Fuck TD42s are pretty great then.
Yowzer
5psi will still at least give it a little gain, so if you can get a cheap enough kit ya may as well. Dunno what the fuel limit on these engines are though so you'll likely still have to.be conservative with the smoke screw. Not like a dirty old 3L that'll take 30psi and a maxed out fuel pump and love it.
ThePog
She wants to hit 1 million Kms in it so I reckon we will leave it.
Yowzer
Give it half a turn on the smoke screw.
jessemk2
1hz will do 1 million kays no worries They still have them in new 70 series in africa cause they run on dodgy diesel and can fix bush mechanics stylez Just drive it for what it is
ThePog
Yea that will help a wee bit..
Yowzer
After half a mill the injector springs and fuel pump will be pretty well flogged if they haven't had a rebuild, that alone will make a world of difference.
kpr
This is the same shit, just minus a cylinder. 50% more power on 8psi boost, with a wind on the pump. no intercooler, stock airbox. just adapter r to stock manifold and some pipes. 1hz looks to be the same deal

A turbo will mask all that beautifully 1
nzstato
4xoverland on YouTube has a bit on turbo a 1hz. A few dos and a lot of don’ts... run light psi and get and EGT gauge. Thin crowns easy to pop and overheat if not careful. Result was general improvement open road driving

I drove it over Mt Messenger a few weeks back and if dealt with it as you'd expect, slow but unrelenting.
