Popular Post nzstato
Since I cant help my self and started pulling it to bits within 20min of having it home, this is going to have its own built thread.... I don't yet know who built the hull, the design/manufacture of it makes me think it was done by a firm rather than at home (unless that builder was quite good at alloy). Its got quite a unique dash layout so hopefully if I post it a few other places then someone will ID it... Either way this thing has done some work... plenty of gravel rash and quite a few hits in the hull. It has plastic covering the centre keel but it ripped around the intake so that will need to be done in time.... Running gear wise we have gen1 1UZ with an old MS1 running it (more on that later...), the jet unit is a 2 stage 'ProFlo' which is essentially a modern remake of the Hamilton 770. Someone has run some of the cooling pipes wrong. It has a heat exchanger so the exit water needs to only flow out of the risers, someone has added a 'tee' for it to go into the front of the manifold heater, with no where to go that water is going to get very hot after a while.... Found out that the fuel pump is wired directly to the key (not happy about that), but it has some other pluses.... two ~45L tanks into a centre filter/sight bowl and a decent gravel trap so someone knew enough how to set it up.
nzstato
Getting it home I cut/polished out some of the marks across the hull. Did a bit of digging and found some tools, spares, etc. and since it came from southland there was a can of Speights in one of the seat pockets.... Wasnt happy with how the accel pedal was set up, the throttle isnt returning after you take your foot off which not only is a massive pain but also a safety issue.... The morse cable is old, probably gummed up. When to take the front assembly off and some bright spark has welded it to the floor.... I cut the welds and will bolt it back once I figure out the issue.... Don't have any EFI experience but this presents an opportunity to learn.... bought a serial cable and read all of the main manuals online so I could plug it in a see what kind of tune was on it.... Doesnt look like anyone has gone to much effort with the tune, also there is no startup enrichment setup on it, likewise someones taken out the idle speed control (since the MS wont run the stock 6 wire unit). I know as much as the internet/youtube is telling me so any advice is welcome... WIth the heat exchanger setup I can uncouple the jet unit and use the garden hose as the water source to run it up in the drive.... the neighbors are going to love me...
Unclejake
I've lost touch with the builder now (he separated from my wife's friend) but I suspect this was built by a chap who used to operate in Gracefield Wellington. He went under the name of Tui Craft Jetboats EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQjsBqSJIF0ZzjidAqIHu2A
nzstato
Pondering next steps on the ECU/1UZ... with the idle control missing the start ups aren't that great... would look to add one of the aftermarket 2-wire kits and somehow run an O2 sensor (I have some ideas)... Thinking I might just stick with what it is for ~6 months, iron out some of the other things and then do the above, upgrade to a MS3 and run CoP with a fully sequential setup and put a new loom in..... I bought this because it wasn't suppose to be 'a project'....
Popular Post nzstato
Some more tweaking tonight... apologies crap pics at night with head torch... The more I got into the throttle setup I found 2-3 other things I didnt like. First was the foot pedal... Its a home made affair but functional enough, pivots on m5 bolts with nylock nuts. Doing nothing drastic I just ensured there were washers at every pivot, used a dab of marine grease everywhere and snuged it up so it moved smooth with min drag. Drilled at each corner to hold it down to the checker plate (with ply underneath) The cable was next, ideally you wouldnt use a morse cable here, you'd use a normal cable to reduce friction and have a return spring at both the pedal and throttle body. I think they did this to get away with one (heavy) return spring, and coz Jet Boat. Anywho it in a bit of a coil in the bottom of the bilge so I pulled it out, checked for kink and then re-routed in a gentle curve round the back over the top of the jet unit - its quite a long cable.... Then the throttle assembly itself... lots wrong here, the clamp holding the cable isnt square to the throttle shaft so its tweaked the pivot sideways, the spring is barely holding on. Also since the arm has been pulled its now contacting an alloy boss on the side, both the position of the cable clamp and the protecting sleeve is preventing full travel of the cable. Result being that this thing was only able to run 1/2-3/4 throttle at any point in time... Bunch of small tweaks.... moved the cable clamp, removed the cable sleeve and cut down the offending boss. Now we have full throttle and it returns correctly to idle position when you take the foot off the pedal. This will do for now, ideally I'll run a proper cable at some point in the future. Made me think... previous owner reckoned it wasnt as powerful as it should be.... did I mention he was a mechanic and managed a workshop....
Popular Post nzstato
Got it out this weekend.... had reset the tune on it and it starts/idles alot better, still not perfect without ICAV but good enough.... trying to track down a log manifold so I can setup an O2 to do some proper logging/tuning. Also, when I did my sale inspection I noticed a decent amount of water collecting in the bilge. Mr mechanic seller wasnt to phased and was happy to use the pump most of the time to clear the bilge, I used this to negotiate thinking that either the jet unit for the bolts holding the keel plastic on would need resealed. Turns out the solution is way easier... water is fair pissing out of the lower seal on the sandtrap. Where the seal fits to the housing was loaded up with old silt and preventing it from sealing (likely pulled apart in a hurry and never cleaned), likewise the seals are old and caked up with grit. Should be an easy fix....
Popular Post nzstato
Took it for another quick blat down the local river. Still haven't been able to find a log manifold to rig up an O2 but jammed another 10% of fuel across the map and pickup/idle is a bunch better. After fixing that sandtrap now bugger all leaks. Need to put in some carpet to quieten the ride and get a road cover made.
nzstato
Vid isnt the greatest and my dad didn't learn to hold it landscape but here is a quick blat up the Taieri river. You can only go ~6km up the gorge and it quickly goes from placid to some heavy lifts to completely un boatable - didn't go as far to show those parts.
nzstato
Bought a few m of marine carpet and glued it into the front hull and sides. Makes it look a bit tidier but also hoping it'll make the hull a bit quieter when on the water. Mounted in a new fire extinguisher, coz, you know, safety....
nzstato
Went for a quick blat out to Lake Waihola The carpet has made a difference but it'll never be a 'quiet' boat. All in all happy. Since this is the thing to do... 3
nzstato
Short vid clip of some playing in Lake Waihola with the family. Spot where I ended up coming in a bit hot and ended up on the beach. Was difficult to restart a few times when hot, need to revisit the start map and maybe add a few ms back in the injection timing. Up in Wanaka in a few weeks so planning to push it a bit more up the braids.
nzstato
Had a few good days up at Wanaka. Couldnt get up the Matukituki with the weather time frame I had but all had a great time... Speedo on my ph shows me that cruising is ~40-45 kph and tops out at ~70kph pulling 4500rpm. Added a little bit more juice on the warm startup map and now it starts hot/cold with a flick of the key and no throttle, still need to check out where I'm running on the accel/deccel map but feels sprightly and doesn't use all that much fuel for the amount of play I was having. Still chasing some minor leaks... found one dripping down the steering shaft, there is a small o-ring in there which I'll need to replace at some point down the track... Also got the word from the wifey I can shell out on a Trim Nozzle, turns out the kids don't like getting blasted by the jetwash while riding on the biscuit.... Some nice boats in the campground... chatted to a few owners as am thinking about re-hulling or buy new in a few years. Will collate a vid or two in the next day or so
nzstato
Had it booked in back in sept but finally have a boat cover made for it. Good quality and thick one, pretty happy with the result.
Popular Post nzstato
Went to go out the other weekend and did not turn over. Suspected the starter had gone dud (I doubt the previous owners ignorance to a bunch of water in the bilge didn't help). The position in the V is a blessing and a curse, it keeps it out of the way but is then a bit of a pain to get too.... A bit more challenging than usual with the coolant pipes running along one side. Got a new one quickly ordered (will look to rebuild the one I have there) and we are back in business. While running it up on the trailer with a water feed I also took the time to do a bit more tuning on the accel map, very much feel I've got this in a better place without having a wideband to tune off. Without the idle air valve I barely even notice now, starts no problem any temp. Was rushing a bit to get done for a planned weekend in Wanaka, had a good blat on the lake up to Stevensons Island and then a bit of time on the Clutha river.
Vintage Grumble
What have you got in the way of engine bay venting? I want to seal mine up as sound tight as possible, but then worry about the motor eating stinky hot air, wondering what the best thing to do is? There is an open port on the cover near the air intake. Its open between the floor and bilge space and there are small vents on the rear bulkhead. The fuel tanks at the rear are vented separately If you are worried about water ingress I'd seal up your top cover as best you can, add a vent (wherever is best) for the intake and run a bulkhead vent well above the waterline. Helpful I hope?
nzstato
With a few extra dollars in my pocket I've shelled out and ordered a new trim nozzle. Been on the cards for a little while, should improve launch and keep the spray off the kids when on the biscuit. Last run I think the wires off the bilge pump got too close to driveshaft and ripped them clean off. Bought a pair online so I wired one in with a terminal block and still have an extra if need to replace easy enough on the river. Also think I've chased down my last few leaks so will sort them out when I fit the new nozzle.
nzstato
Bling bling.... Its a decent chunk of alloy/brass when you have it sitting on the bench.
nzstato
I'm waiting on some new M8 studs but have gone through mockup. Bit of faffing around but we're getting there. Cant wait for L2 to go try it out.... Nozzle goes up.... Nozzle goes down....
nzstato
More bits and pieces but this may help someone else out. I found that the steering knuckle for the FloPro item must have a different point in the shaft where the flat is milled for the taper pin to go into compared to whatever 770 copy I have here. I first tried to redrill a new hole for the taper pin but I was unhappy with how little brass was left around it - if it was to split there I would be in trouble. The FP item does have quite a recess milled into the end Decided to make one from scratch out of some square brass bar, in hindsight I could have remilled a new flat in the shaft but dont quite have the setup to do that and many ways to skin a cat.... Took it out for a quick blat in the weekend. Pretty happy with the results, gets up on the plane now superquick (very little bow rise), planes slower and kicks up a nice jet at full speed. Off to Central labour weekend so hopefully get it out a bit more.
