Rb drifters' neglected 82 ex lancer

Well well well, the title should hopefully explain this well...

This is my baby, the car that holds far too many memories, the car I could never part with, yet it's the car I neglect and leave sitting in the corner of my shed and never work on....

FB_IMG_1586410241190.jpg.7e0632c20962bcb7ba682eeef740faa7.jpg

This journey started around 8 years ago when I had a 12a Bridgeport motor and box in my shed and I was on the hunt for a rolling body to drop it in. I was fixed on a s1 rx7 body I found until a mate sent me a trademe link to a near immaculate, completely factory green gsl ex lancer, him doing this knowing I had always wanted an ex lancer. And so it begun

The 12a never ended up in it, it started as a 1600, then had a 4g63 sohc, then probably a few more  until I dropped a 4g63t dohc turbo vr4 block in it. Unfortunately money got tight and I sold the motor to keep the mortgage and mrs at the time happy, so it went back to a 4g63 sohc carby.

This did have a thread from the early days but its goneburgers now so we will play 8 years of catchup

Over the years this had blown a few diff heads and axles from excessive skids but I managed to acquire a factory turbo 10bolt, disk brake lsd from a parts car I bought for $150 !! Bloody good score as some people pay $1500 for these diffs.

A set of factory turbo tail lights and center garnish had popped up for $200 so I snatched them up also

Although the interior was extremely tidying wanted some recaro fishnet seats so got these from a bighorn FB_IMG_1586435634192.jpg.263a5744a90fe3bf8872d8d6ef5bfcf0.jpg

The dream catcher and hippie shit hanging from the mirror has been there since day one and will stay there too

Have purchased a fiberglass wing/spoiler/duckbill whatever you wanna call it, have never fitted it just sat it there I'm still in two minds about it

Suspension wise it has some king springs that came from a Mazda 626 in the rear, cut to suit desired height with mirage adjustable damper shocks that keep them captive. Up front it has starion struts, shortened shock inserts, unknown king springs cut to suit, station lower arms, band new brake pads, rekitted brake calipers, new balljoints, new swaybar bushes etc.

Only thing I want to change is adjustable camber plates for struts and a strut brace

Ignore the 5 stud hubs in pics, it had 5 stud station hubs but I've gone back to 4 stud now

So now fast forward to our current situation in lockdown...

I ordered a top end gasket set as an "essential item"  so I could assemble the 4g63 sohc that's in it. Turned out the motor I put in it from my parts ute had a head done just before I bought it and they had never torqued the head bolts correctly causing the gasket to leak...

So today I stripped the head, did a quick valve grind, chucked new valve guides in and new cam seal, then couldn't find my tourqe wrench to assemble the head. I'm gathering it got stolen when my shed got broken into a while back. Good thing is theres one at work I'll use.

Went to work and grabbed the 3/8 and 1/2 tourqe wrenches, had trouble finding cam cap specs online so resorted to the oldschool method of looking through my stack of mitsi books with great success!!!!

Feels good to see some progress on this old girl, also added inspirainspirational mitsi poster I have framed in my shed because how cool!

And when you dont have a bench grinder at home you improvise to clean bolts, I present the Milwaukee portable bench grinder 20200413_112424_copy_1008x490.jpg.897a6fbf5c86414d5959d07a4f86da68.jpg

Got most things assembled in the engine bay today, extractors on, radiator in, inlet manifold and distributor in. Went to put a carb on and realized my spacer between carb and manifold was broken, tried looking for a spare in my parts but no luck so I'll probably raid the one of my 4wd parts L200 ute. IMG_20200413_120607_836_copy_445x445.jpg.daceb0ccd923809a856dec7bea97efa3.jpg20200413_175416_copy_490x1008.jpg.bcd0e3a62545e93cac314780dea1f8de.jpg

Still haven't got this running. Got everything assembled to make it run but I think the carb is no good, I have since found another carb that's been rebuilt now to find time to fit it

Also for the first time in maybe 8 years I degreased and scrubbed the engine bay clean

Finally got the old girl running, not sure exactly what the issue was but I replaced the carburetor with a rebuilt one, distributor cap, rotor, leads, adjusted timing,  cleaned the spark plugs and it burst into life, still needs some minor timing adjustments and fine tuning on the carb but I'm stoked. Worst part was I couldnt take it on a test drive due to a new asphalt driveway only just been finished.

Its been a while since I've had an update. I've still been working on it but motivation comes and goes in amongst being a parent and work etc etc

Latest stuff I've done was build a new exhaust,  2.25" with a hotdog half way and muffler at the rear with chrome tip.

Realized I never got a finished product photo just now. Oops

Once exhaust was done I ran it for a wof and failed on shit it shouldn't have. I was pretty pissed off so took it to another testing station, similar results with a wof sheet of bullshit again. Third time I struck it lucky only needing to rebleed brakes and replace a headlight. Will be taking it back for a recheck asap!

Before the wof i replaced the old makita springs with legit lowering springs and tidied up a few other jobs. 20201112_125840_copy_490x1008.jpg.d8eac632e96826531c79235a91997dc5.jpg

Booked the green beast in for a much needed wheel alignment tomorrow morning then off for a fish !

Also heres a couple pics of my other lancer I've acquired. Somehow every mitsi I buy is 1982 ...doh!

Its originally a 1.6 auto gsl model, now fitted a 4g63 sohc 8 valve with webber carburetor and 5 speed manual. Its in fair condition for its age definitely needs tidying up but its still a solid car and I'm happy with having a standard looking one to park next to my others

Bit slow on updates, drove the shit out of this over summer and loved having it legal again.

20210402_113412_copy_2000x1500.thumb.jpg.7f4ee2adc4ed3270f71c914149ab696a.jpg

Probably chewed through nearly a dozen tyres Because I just can't resist a cheeky burnout

The new exhaust has been absolutely ruined in the mid section thanks to all the speedbumps in whangarei... yay

But it's been parked up again as a water line burst little to my knowledge and it got cooked. At this point it still ran and drove but used water so I went and ripped a classic 5th gear skid for the boys at a birthday party and now it really doesn't want to run haha

The ideas are flowing for my options right now but aunty westpac says otherwise

Not much of an update but I decided these wheels could use a clean up. 20210707_183525_copy_1200x1600.thumb.jpg.f9ea53187e07674f1c5cd7fc5d5a65b5.jpg

So removed the bolts and started with 600 grit wet sand

20210707_185144_copy_1200x1600.thumb.jpg.6da17d8503802b8eb741420f1f6b1d8b.jpg

The couldn't locate my 800 or 1200 grit so left it at 600 and tried my best to polish it. Results are better than where I started but not satisfied yet, I will return with more sandpaper!

20210707_193423_copy_1200x1600.thumb.jpg.bebc7df21a6b6eea02b94d4698e2f213.jpg

Now I want new hardware too, the old stuff is too rustic to suit the polish

Got my front crossmember and the body mounts for rear diff dipped in acid to clean off the rust.

Quite happy with the results gave them a coating in this product called ripo aswell. First time using this method but been advised I works well, next is paint once everything has dried up

As always been neglecting this car but I did do something to it by chance.

Found a cyborg in my mates paddock so purchased it to strip for parts. Wasn't much worth saving but the motor will be of good use. 1600 dohc turbo 4g61t.

Decided to mate it to my sigma gearbox using a sigma flywheel and cluch and drop it in the hole.

Flipped the td04 on the stock manifold for a laugh, it won't work as it's touching steering box but kept me entertained. And purchased a modified rwd intake manifold off Bigfoot
