Beaver
Decided I needed to get a bit of big wheeled action. As much fun as the Jog is, its not really cut out for my long frame nor longer distances. So spotted a v50 on the tard and snapped it up. Trip up to Auckland with Geophy and bada bing bada boom Guy I bought it off had it since 2011/2012 at which time he got it off a guy from Te Aroha who worked at the council and drove it to work everyday for 20 years he reckoned. The rego had lapsed at some point so was re-registered in 2012 as a 1989 model but is actually a 79 according to the original rego details (still have a rego tag from 2003). Anyway, reg on hold so all good. Got it home, fresh gas and oil, and fired right up. New battery and a couple of bulbs and all the electrics worked, perfect. Pulled carb to bits and cleaned out, otherwise haven't had to do much which is exactly what I wanted. Next step was to sort out the seat. It came with a new cover, so was going to patch up the foam and redo it factory spec, but the master upholster Greg convinced me otherwise (didn't take much). 5

Popular Post Beaver
In the mean time, the old owner managed to track down the leg shield which he reported was fucked, but I wanted it anyway. Turns out my standards must be lower as its perfect. Perfectly aged! I also ditched the front guard as it looked weird as it had faded to grey and sat waaay to high. Looks much better without in my opinion. And to keep the barrys happy, here is my solution to stop me from losing the key (it is just a random key that works but rattle out when riding). Perfect. Next are plans to big block/chuck a lifan in. Not really going to touch the bike otherwise, as I like the idea of a originalish looking bike but with enough grunt to go adventuring.

Popular Post Beaver
So fast forward nearly 2 months and took it first test this morning. So much fun. Massive props to @Geophy who helped out with pretty much everything. Still need to tidy things up and sort wiring, but yeh, so stoked to have it ridable. Was being a bitch so didn't do a high speed run but goes plenty fast enough for what I want
Beaver
Just about ready for adventures. Fitted up some golden boys (tires), rather close fitment but seems to be all good....dreams of a front guard are gone haha. Tidied up the wiring etc as well so looks a lot cleaner now.

Popular Post Beaver
So I wanted to do something about the front guard. Decided I could make the factory one fit.....had so cut a fair bit off so it didn't hit the motor, but otherwise works a treat. Then decided o would try make the leg shield fit. Surprisingly little cutting, obviously had to make a hole for the carb, bit otherwise just a bit of trimming for the motor and exhaust. Super happy with how it looks now, the frames on these don't suit the stripped down look in my opinion. Oh and also put the chain guards back on.

Popular Post Beaver
So managed to complete the te urewera undertaking recently, 580 odd km over 3 days with the majority being gravel. Was an absolute blast and this beast handled it pretty swimmingly (better than my ability to handle it on the twisty stuff anyway). Front guard is due to the old one not actually fitting and nearly killing me @Geophy and @GuyWithAviators before exploding, so fashioned up something from an old bike rack and a number plate to keep the shit off my face. Works a treat but looks a bit silly. 9
Popular Post Beaver
Big had been running rougher and rougher and I noticed it would chuff from the intake manifold as well. So pulled it apart and applied liberal amounts of goo. Runs better than ever and starts way nicer and idles straight away when cold etc. Boom. Also have aquired another frame for a side project, as seen below. Chucked my original v50 motor in. Plan is slam, hardtail, flat bars etc. 10
matred
Have you got a few details on the mounts to put motor in?
Beaver
I bolted up th front engine mount to the factory frame mount (with washer's to suit the width), and then just made a plate that bolted to th back two frame mounts with hole for the rear engine mounting bolt. Will try find some pics. All done with some steel plate, a grinder and a drill.
Beaver
This was the detailed design drawing
Beaver
If I was to do it again I would notch the frame and get the engine sitting a bit further back, and then just drill the frame to pick up the front engine mount
Beaver
So turns out this thing is allergic to heavy rain. At the end of the first day on last years east cape ride when the heavens opened, it kept dieing and then wouldn't start. (got it going later that night so forgot about it). Then last weekend went on a ride with some dorklanders in the rain and had issues with it cutting out. It was only during the wettest part of the tide, and then later on when it had stopped raining it ran fine. The only things (I can thing of) that are exposed to water/rain/spray are the air filter and the engine head including spark plug and HT lead. I tried riding along with the air filter off in case it was getting soaked but this didn't change anything. Pulling the HT lead off showed a bit of water on the inside of the plug socket, so at this stage I think that's the most likely culprit. its just the OG lifan one, so will try track down a better fitting/sealing one and see if that helps. Anyone thing of anything else I'm missing? The rest of the electronics are tucked up in the body of the bike and no real way to get wet (I think) but will check that. On the basis the bike has been going fine, and was going fine when I started the ride and only started crapping out in the real heavy rain, and then ran fine again after the rain stopped, suggests to be it has to be rain/water related.
