spanners
Haha don’t worry I appreciate that the vert life isn’t for everyone! the current 19s are 19x8.5 ET35, with 235 35 tyres on them. No rubbing at all and I reckon I could lower it without an issue. Not very stancey but I’m fucking over rubbing wheels and dialling in camber to compensate. The style 32s I had on there were a 215/35 mounted on 18x8 et20 and 18x9 et22 wheels. The sidewalls just touched the guards on big bumps, but honestly I think the 330i deserves much more Tyre than 215. I still haven’t decided what to run on the e36 but with a planned 500ish horses I think it’ll be a 245 or 265 in the back.
datlow
My van has as standard a weird angled filter, luckily the engineers actually thought it through and built in a little oil ramp/drain thing 6
WhangareiKE70
Generic pic from internet but the 1KZ in my old Hiace (RIP) had the oil filter running at about 45 degrees off vertical like this, that lip below was a part of the casting, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to fab something up out of sheet steel to replicate. It caught the remainder of the oil from the filter and had a hosed attached that ran down to under the van. Was cool. 2
spanners
Funny you both point those out - I just realised I have done multiple oil changes on cars with those tray setups. I guess my main concern was the function of the actual filter, but safe to say it doesn't matter.
BlownCorona
If you want one of those drain trays, the dodge rams have them. You know where they are. /please dont break in a steal one, we get enough of that as is. I can grab one off if you want?

cletus
V8 valiants have an upside down filter. It doesnt have any clever drain paths so if you dont cut up an old drink bottle to catch the oil it goes all over the engine and floor and exhaust The other downside is you cant prefill the filter so it takes a couple of seconds of the genie lamp being on/lifters rattling before it fills the filter up itself And there's my sharn on that. 3 1
spanners
Haha I’ll think about the dodges but no need to break in, just walk in the front door and start pillaging! I think I’ll hang filter under the mount like a normal car and just have it on an angle to clear belts and ground and cats eyes.
AllTorque
Punch a hole in the filter before spinning it off and it will drain most of the oil out.
Guest
Alltorque has it sorted. Learnt this trick at work as we had a few machines with the hydraulic filters like that and they were BIG. If u didnt punch them the mess was epic.
Popular Post spanners
So I decided that the only sensible course of action was to build a garage worthy of projects. The car was stored at a mates for a while but I’ve since brought it home to papa and it’s front and (off)centre of the shed. I wanted to keep to a budget but by the time you’ve paid for the electrical gear and the ply and floor paint, it all adds up! Haven’t even poured a driveway yet which will sting. Considering the ply sheets are cheap bunnings spec I’m pretty happy with some of the grain Anyway... to the car. I bought a staggered set of M-parallels. If you’re not a bmw person you might not care about that, but beema people will fizz. They’re 18x8 +14 and 18x9 +25 (from memory) and have 235 and 265 RE003s on them. Keen to make em smoke. The rear is going to get 25mm spacers and the front has wider control arms from an E46. For those that don’t know, the arms push the castor forward a bit and the track out 25ish mm per side due to slightly different design. I bought Condor bushes to make that work, they’re pretty sweet but cost the earth thanks to NZD - USD exchange rate. Maybe I should clean that arm.. I ordered an over fender kit from Cliq but it’s been a fucking mare and nothing has been shipped, so I expect PayPal will refund me and I’ll be back on the hunt. Tempted to roll bolt on flares just for the OS lols but it restricts low low and I love slammed whips. Also the bf made me a sick Xmas present which broke shortly afterwards (he’s a sparky and maybe not such a fabricator haha) but I’ll fix it up, paint the body black, and hopefully use it as main key. Anyway if you’ve been following this build I’m sorry about the delay. Garage took way longer than planned. Hopefully less delays coming up, me and the brother have agreed that leadfoot 2021 is our deadline. Long drive from the south but would be sick! his FD Is coming along. Engine fit surprisingly easily and we going off the shelf headers for him which saves pain. Circle Track down in chch is building him a driveshaft as we speak and I’ll get one off them soon too. Also my letterbox finally rusted up and is starting to look sweet. Fucking couriers though, it’s been installed for months and not a single package has made it into the package slot. Oh well, I tried.
Popular Post spanners
Oh yeah forgot. The brothers car has 4 pots and I got jealous so I bought some alfa romeo 166 brembos. I would assume that being Italian they'll leak until they blow up but painting on a BMW badge might resolve that. My theory is that the alfa brakes mounting holes are parallel (although not concentric) to the BMW ones which will keep the mounting bracket a bit more 2 dimensional. I have no idea if they'll fit but worth a shot for $200. At the risk of sounding shallow I wouldn't mind some larger discs for purely aesthetic reasons, but will see if the current disc is already a stretch. I feel like red Brembos is super cliche but these might end up red if I cant make the original paint look good. I wish the caliper rattle cans came in more colours. At least you can buy heat proof decals for them so they'll look the ducks nuts.
Popular Post spanners
So brakes have proved to be a cunt. Surprise. I’ll try and make that work later but it’s not exactly critical path at the moment. Built a sweet steel workbench And then got the Grinder out to attack rear quarter panels so I could eliminate rub later on. Took a few goes to get it high enough. May as well start conservative and keep going till you’re Bernie Sanders! I’ve taken spring and shock out to see where wheel can possible go, but it doesn’t have bump stops in it at the mo so not getting a great feel for it. Got too late and the Grinder was loud so had to stop. I might have taken enough off but won’t get a welder out until I’m sure. Anyway photos.
spanners
So this almost seems like a repeat post/pics but it’s not Had to get the grinder back out tonight to keep hacking. Ended up going up 100mm above the original arch line. Seems giant but E36 rear arches are quite low standard so wide tyres will need a lot of clearance. The inner skin ended up having a spot welded second skin up that high so was stiff as fuck. Hard to beat into the shape I wanted but with enough sweat and hammers I got it to the point where I could weld it. Welding was hard on thin dirty steel with the mig but got it ok. Will underbody sealer it to stop rust and spray some fish oil into the inside. If anyone has experience with bolt on flares I’d love some input. How wide should the flares be based on this pic? Stancebois probably think the tyre should be flush with edge of flare but I think 10mm overhang would save rubbing. I’m just nervous it’ll look shit. Thoughts? kyteler
Have you considered slitting the arch up in segments toward the body line and pulling the lower section out instead of bolt on flares? Don't get me wrong, I love bolt ons but box flares or "wide body" on this would look a lot smoother.
spanners
The attempts I’ve seen at pulling the guards out tend to ruin the body line pretty quickly so I won’t bother trying. I’m not artistic. Bolt ons are just for cert really - I’m planning on running felony form overfenders but I don’t want to spent $1800 on something that doesn’t help the car run. Still have a lot of wiring/tuning/drivetrain expenses. I have a theory that changing flare style won’t void cert. Maybe cletus would disagree. I did find a cool photo of an E36 with bolt ons but I don’t think mine would actually be that low or wide so I shouldn’t get my hopes up. There’s a possibility that I will fall in love with bolt ons and never get around to changing it if mine looks cool.

spanners
45 minutes ago, datlow said: prety sure for a cert they cant contact/rub @cletus? Sorry maybe I wasn’t clear. Im saying that if I use a 50mm flare I’m nervous it’ll rub, but if I go wider I’m nervous it’ll look stupid. So I wondered if anyone with experience with bolt ons could give me some intuition about how wide I should go. The goal for the arches is that they never rub no matter what the loading condition, even in lowest stanceworks knob setting.
