Ash’s budget furniture

Bought a house last year so I’m a lot more budget minded now, that and what I don’t spend on the house gets spent on cars so every cent counts ;)

being a Jew on everything but cars I’ve decided to try my hand at some super tidy furniture for the house on a budget.

started with a dining table.

luckily I did some elect work for one of our fabricators at work so I’m getting all the legs steel, fabbed and painted for free

picked up a pine laminate slab from Bunnings.

$115 for 2100x900 and about 30mm thick

using the stain in the picture plus a clear with Saturn finish. They were around $70 a tub.

Probably only use about 1/3 of them for this so about $45 worth of stain for this.

so about $160 so far for the table

didnt sand the slab at all, wanted to leave the high spots and rough bits.

did the first coat super thick with just the jap black, and actually looked a lot darker in person then the photo, darker then the last photo

sanded it all back with worn out 120 grit, this took all the high spots back and brought through the grain and edges.

next mixed the clear and jap black 1-5 in favour of the clear and that’s how it sits now.

ill probably give it another coat with 1-4 and see how it looks.

plan is to get another two slabs. Cut one into two 450x450 side tables and 1650x900 cut to width for coffee table.

the last into 2100x450 for two tier TV table.

legs will all be retangular box tube, painted in Saturn black and the timber to all be the same stain and thickness

How did you apply the final coat of clear?

(I've been failing at everything I try to varnish lately. First, I continue trying to fix the brush marks and runs and bits of stuff stuck in the varnish while it's starting to dry, making it worse than it was already going to be. Next, I try to sand it prior to doing second coat but I end up sanding through the first coat and the stain underneath... Painting's not my thing..)

I use rollers ;)

just cheap ones from Bunnings, about $15 for a roller and a tray.

and $5 for a pack of two rollers.

main thing is I use foam rollers, and use a roller per coat. I don’t bother cleaning them as they get hard in some places and not so you end up with uneven coverage.

with applying..

i dip it in the tray then lightly roll it on the rolling bit. Press to hard and you lose all the product and end up dipping it loads of times.

once the product on the roller a squish the ends of the roller to remove a bit. I found this helps get rid of the edges.

Next I only do long rolls, basically to get as much coverage as possible and get as much on as I can. From there I just keep rolling until it’s all even.

probably spend more time rolling it even then just getting the stain on.

For the final coats just thin them down. Just check what product your using but mine I can just use turps.

ill probably thin mine right down and do three super thin coats to finish it. Maybe sand with some 800-1200 grit between.

good thing about the foam rollers is, when it starts getting tacky you can see by how much it tacks to the roller, how even the coverage is

Fab mates had a baby 6 weeks ago then been on a corse so the legs got put on the back burner for a while.

30x75 box tube.

110 degree angle.

i was planning on doing them square but he talked me into an angle and I’m happy he did.

i wanted something with a large foot area so it’s easy to slide around and with a large surface area won’t fuck the carpet.

still needs another coat of clear and I do the bar stools and dinning chairs in the same stain

excuse the mess we’re redoing our laundry atm so there’s  shit every were.

hopefully get onto the coffee table soon when funds replenish from reno’s. If anyone needs any electrical work done let me know ;)

that looks great. in the next week or two im gonna be jamming alot of that black japan stain over my kitchen floor.

looking forward to the results! got me thinking i should use any left overs to make a similar coffee table!

Yeah mate super stoked with how it’s turned out.

it is super dark though so I’d definitely recommend picking up a pot of clear and mixing it for the added coats. And get 3-4 bottles of turps

straight jap black super thick for the first coat then sand it to get the grain.

then clear and jap black mixes to get it to where you want is the go.

heres some photos of it with the chairs I’ve just finish staining, still needs a finishing coat, witch will be clear thats thinned down a lot so it self levels and releases bubbles easy

i did a test spot and it was like putting Tar on. mines a specific flooring version but will see how it goes and perhaps mix some clear for a 3rd or 4th coat.

im wondering if it needs to be warmed to apply given how cold its been down here recently? how was yours? might try thinning it out too.

Yeah it is super thick. It’s meant to be thinned down.

you can actually add quite a bit of thinners to it and it’s still sweet. Good for the following coats.

helps it self level and release bubbles too.

and it doesn’t seem to slow down the drying time either. Once rolled out and a bit of air flow it goes tacky pretty quick.

if you mix up to much in the tray with thinners and have left overs after a coat don’t be afraid to just poor it back in the pot. Painter mate said it’s fine  and I’ve done it with this no issues

Looking good, recommend learning how to use a router and giving laminated ply a go. very on trend lol. about $120 for a sheet, not bad IMO. Flip with a router you can make so many things!

I just made this from scratch (Stripped the room bare), learning how to router on the job. Don't recommend Bunnings ply!

GIB plastering isn't all that difficult either.

Awesome stuff man!! Looks really good!

It’s amazing what you can do with ply.

old boy builder I’ve been doing some jobs with just built a walk in pantry out of it. Used 3 sheets at $67 a sheet.

just a skill saw, glue, screws and drill.

Their getting cupboard doors done by a cabinetry place when they get the kitchen done, but super impressed with what he could do with so little

Cheers!

Yup that's the plan. Most of the house is already done.

White walls, black doors. Carried that monochrome theme through the rest of the house with dashs of red throughout.

Sorry Ash for the thread hijack! Cheers for the advice though. Worked a treat

Managed to actually find time to do some more on the house!

was on the hunt for a large mirror for the bathroom try make it feel a bit bigger then it is.

also, so miss’ can do her makeup while im shaving my head haha

turns out trying to find something was a mish, even free standing to turn sideways was a mission or they wanted stupid money.

went to an art framing place, old boy said he’d do me a solid and with frame and mirror in size I wanted for 800 cash :compress:

flagging that, found a place called cosmo glass, small family business.

picked up a 1600x700 mirror for $200

spent a bit doing demisting elements behind it

and used some chunky architrave to frame it. Currently staining it like I did the dinning table above, but darker with less grain.

probably cheaper ways to do it, but demisted and that size probably around $400 it’s cost me, so I’m happy with that

plus I got to use my new Milwaukee gasless finishing gun :thumbleft: highly recommended

I’m needing to do a wardrobe soon. Where did you get the draws and sliders from?
