Pepo1
Hi there, I'm just starting out with mig welding and wanna buy some panel steel to start playing with. Where do people buy their steel in Auckland? Cheers!
M.H.
Go to your local sheetmetal engineer and get some of his offcuts, box of piss usually covers it
azzurro
Probably depends where you are. I use north shore metals in rosedale. They have offcuts and etc of bar stock but dont cut sheet steel on site. The ususly have some half sheets tho. I think a full sheet (1200x2400) of ~1mm zintec was $45 or so last time i got one.
flyingbrick
Exactly. A full sheet for 45 is better than a few offcuts for a box of piss
Mark_Fleming
look up ironmaiden4 on trademe, they're in Onehunga and sell lots of steel items at very reasonable pricing....
Jusepy82
Hey could anyone give me an idea of what a full sheet of panel steel would cost now. Im after either a half sheet or full sheet of 1mm sheet metal/panel steel ? Thanks
kws
Ive used these guys to send me sheets of panel steel before https://www.dunedinsheetmetals.co.nz/ I had real trouble finding anyone locally that would sell half sheets, or deliver small quantities to residential addresses. Last time I bought a full sheet of 1mm cold rolled it was $65+gst. That was in 2021. 1
Jusepy82
Thanks @Nominal. Was shitting myself that it would be expensive as.
Nominal
It's probably more now, and extra for the electrogalv/zintec type, and delivery but likely affordable. The plain cold rolled does rust, I spray it with crc to keep that in check.

Jusepy82
What thickness would you guys reccomend for panel steel for an escort ?
Doug Hill
1-1.6 depending on what you're replacing. I haven't come across anything 0.8 on any of the ones I've done at work (that I can remember) most stuff I've done on those is 1.2 I think
Jusepy82
I was thinking 1mm as measuring the metal that came off it was 1mm
