Popular Post ThePog
Try as might I couldn't get the speedo to work, then the rev counter started playing up too. I bought most of another cluster and swapped out the speedo but it was an earlier version and wouldn't work either. It was worth it tho for the complete front plastic bit, which was broken on mine. Apparently the clusters are a bit shit anyway so I started looking for aftermarket ones, this was fucking depressing, like $480 bux each for a Speedo and tach. I rang Young's automotive just to see what they could do but got the same story. Then the dude asked me to hang on and came back saying he had some old stock isspro gauges in mph that he could do for 200, fuck yea I said. Getting these to work was interesting, but once I had it sorted I cranked into the mounting. This was the problem, all the shitty tracks and plugs on the fpc right where I wanted to put the gauges; So after mounting the gauges I recreated the shit I needed for the other gauges and lights from some prototyping PCB board, kind of rough but within my capabilities; The gauges are smaller than the originals, but not too stupid looking. I got a plate laser cut to cover the too big holes and where the odometer was. Because the Speedo was in miles, and the odometer would also be in miles, I just calibrated it so the miles show as kilometers and used a black permanent marker to black out the shit that contradicted that lol. When I hooked it up half the lights didn't work and I thought I had fucked it up, but it turned out half the bulbs were blown, I replaced those and good to go. Not sure what happened there.. Good to go. I also got it hot to see if the fan cycled, it didn't and it turned out the fuse was blown as it was a bit small. I put in a bigger one and checked again today, all works as expected. The rad must be effective cos the fan runs for 30 sec then takes 5 mins to start up again when sitting there idling. I also put a manual switch in there just in case. The power steering is leaking but this is just an o ring issue, I will sort that next.
NickJ
I'm currently trying to decide how to upgrade to a diesel 4wd, looking for a decent off-road abilities for heading up the eastcoast valleys but also can be set up for camping with the missus. This machine keeps popping into my head as fitting most requirements. Keen to see your camper attachments when they get started

I can't decide whether to frame the camper in steel, use freezer panel, or make my own custom sips panels from ally/foam/ply. I have found from the bus that you get some condensation where the steel framing is, so want to avoid that. It needs to be pretty light. It will also have a hard pop top so it isn't too much of a brick on the road, but has decent headroom. I'm looking forward to that build.
NickJ
No worries there, I really do need to put "No modified drivetrains" into the requirements, its just hard to find a capable 4wd that is useable, so far putting a roof tent onto an SUV body is the most workable option, just it would be nice to have more headroom in the back for when you just want to chill for a bit and be crunched up. Landcruiser troopy or Defender are about the only two options at present
ThePog
A high roof safari would be the go, they don't have quite the same level of Toyota tax but would be comparable performance and reliability. I see about 3 for every 80 series up here, so they are doing something right. The drivetrain is much chunkier than the Toyota's as well. I don't know about defenders apart from the thought of owning one makes me screw my face up a little bit.

High roof safari definitely wins on the comfort factor, i'm slightly nervous of getting one stuck, I can get the Niva out by myself with a highlift, those granroads are monsters! The few i've seen for sale sound like value for money. We had a S3 on the farm when I grew up so have bit of a soft spot for them, kinda like a Niva but with tweed..... Drove one the other day and was quite happy with it, just sparing the cash for something with less interior trim than the Niva is seriously questioning my sanity.
ThePog
Been tidying shit up endlessly, trying to get the power steering pump not to leak etc. The only vaguely interesting thing I have done (and even then only slightly) is to make this gear knob out of a bit of my old piano that we smashed up. I talked to cert guy but he is not keen to come back to Nelson, this sucks a bit as it means I may have to ship it to Wellington to get it checked. This will be a pain if I need to do anything to it for the cert. In the meantime I will get it to a weighbridge and get a warrant check done, then wonder where the money will come from...
WhangareiKE70
If it is at all helpful, I have a TD42 PS pump you can have? I stole the reservoir off the top to use in my setup, but the pump itself is still there? Depends where your leaks are coming from. Let me know anyway and I can send it to you if you want it. PITA abut the cert check thing. Where is the closest one to you if you stay on the same island?

Yea man, I would take that for sure, I will pm my addy etc. The nearest cert for scratch built is in Chch, but my man knows the project and is (I hope) on board with what I have done, has seen all the reports etc. I would be $950 to get it there, but probably about the same to get him down here, so probably no real difference. igor
Perhaps if the cost is near enough to the same it would be preferable to get the cert man to come to you. That way you would have your workshop and tools available for any finishing touches that may be required.
ThePog
It depends, if he has to do a recheck it gets ugly. It would be a lot cheaper for me to fly up for a few days to sort things. Fingers crossed there is nothing too ugly. My family is in Taranaki, so assuming it gets legal I would probably go for a visit while I was on that side of the ditch. I think it would be pretty rare to get a cert on a 1st inspection, but you might get lucky. When I took the Mercury in there was a fair list of minor items to attend to. I'm about 1hr north of Wellington and could loan space/tools if you like.

Cheers man, I might take you up on that if it comes to it. I have family in Raumati so would be staying there, but I doubt they have tools or any space..
Popular Post ThePog
Alrighty, bit of an update lull as it has been way too fucking hot to do anything serious, plus I am broke so cannot fund much stuff that needs to happen. I have been picking away at a a few jobs tho; I added some deck lights. Nothing super bright, but then they don't draw a shit load of amps either. I took it for a stealthy drive down to the weighbridge, it has ended up at 2450kg with a full tank of diesel, not as light as I thought but still lighter than a Safari, pretty happy with that really as the deck is a chunk bit of work. That was the first time at road speed and it feels fucking great. The drive did highlight the need for a bit more airflow to the rad, it was a super hot day but at road speed the fan was still cycling which isn't ideal. Thus I built a pretty serious bit of ducting/shrouding underneath which I don't have a great pic of but which seems to do the trick; This was actually a bit of an effort as I needed it to clear the diff, which meant relocating the brake T block, which meant redoing the front brake lines etc etc. Cool cool. It also got pretty hot in that cab, so I have ordered some heat shield material, I will see how that goes. As an added precaution I created a bit of bodgy HVAC to pull hot air out when things got too much like an oven; This was because I had a 24v 150mm fan that has been in my stash for 10 years - see you should never throw things out but hoard them always. This runs off a bi metallic switch set for some random temperature. I have had a couple of previous comments about my choice of thermofan switch which I chose to cut in at 102deg. I talked to my radiator man about it who said what a cunt I was and that mid 80 degs was where I should be so the cooling system has a bit of headroom to work before boiling. Ok, I am abashed. The cheap easy switches were all M16 thread though and the fitting in the thermostat housing is M12, so I pulled it off and retapped it to suit. This has made the cooling situation feel a bit happier, plus it doesn't get so hot in the cab. This is probably good all round. Being broke and discovering that I had 4x 24v relays from the donor truck I decided to create a trailer plug 24-12v drop down converter; I will get a trailer plug and wire this shit in. There is 12v available at the back of the truck from the dc-dc converter set up for the air pump. Sweet. Lastly there is a leak from the exhaust manifold somewhere, and this will be difficult to sort because of the stupid little adapter I made to go from the OEM manifold to the TD05 inlet. So I drew these up the other day and got them cut. I will purchase some bends when I have some spare casharoonies... Then brace yourselves for some header lovins bitches. Also I made some spares to potentially pay for the cutting, let me know if you need some.... At ease.
sidewaysickness
That air shroud for the radiator is going to be great for pushing mud up into the radiator when you go four wheel driv.... Oh wait... nevermind Hahaha 2
ThePog
Ha you are such a cunt. Hows that LTD coming along? Nearly done? I have actually thought about this as it is pretty obviously not great for off road, I am going to make an ally skid guard that will protect that lip and move shit out of the way before it gets wedged up there. Originally I thought i might need to create that duct all the way to the front, but I don't think I will need it now... And anyway i will just need to do some skids in the paddock to muddy it up enough to make it look like I have been off road. 3
