Kdotlowe's YB100s

Well technically my girlfriends.

Since riding on the back of my motorcycle through Vietnam, my girlfriend has expressed interest in learning to ride a motorcycle herself.

Always keen to crowd my garage with more non-running vehicles, I swooped up a pair of YB100s from the Moped NZ Facebook page. Good excuse to buy a 2 stroke, cause I’ve been pining for one for a long time.

The first one is complete with live rego. Recently failed a WOF on fork seals and brake shoes - so nothing major. The plan is to keep my hands off it! I’ll pillage the front fender off the second bike, flip the handlebars back over and have a completely standard bike for my girlfriend to learn to ride on. Would love to completely restore it one day.

The second one is in bits, but it looks like everything is there. Registration status is unknown.

Decided to go balls deep on the spare engine. I've had a fair few motorcycle engines apart, but I've never had them down to the bare cases. Time to learn a thing or two. I also need to find out why the engine was in pieces in the first place. I can only assume something is broken or something is missing.

Started stripping, bagging and tagging.

Found a problem! Now the scavenger hunt begins for a new one.

Stripped the carbs which had the the most disgusting, gooey, varnished fuel covering everything. Will give it a dunk in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Also managed to get the crank out with a bit of persuasion. Super excited to send the cases off to get vapour blasted. Now on the hunt to find replacement bearings & seals.

Shit yeah. I hand cleaned everything, what a waste of time haha.

I almost did the bridge the other day, but then ended up taking the seats out the Corolla and taking it over, never again. Might just risk the biscuit next time.

Let's cross this bridge together haha.

Been a little distracted with another new bike purchase. However, nearly all the parts have arrived to do the bottom end rebuild. Just waiting on one more bearing and trying to find a replacement shift fork.Shout outs to Yambits for being a helpful bunch!

Installed the new bearings today. Baked the cases for 45 minutes in the oven and left the bearings in the freezer overnight. Dropped in easily!

Installed the transmission to make sure there was enough clearance to seal the case halves. Couldn't figure out why nothing would line up - turns out when I replaced the shift forks I accidentally put them in the wrong order, oops.

Couldn't figure out why I had no first gear, and spent an embarrassingly long time trying to solve it. Until I remembered this bike has a GP shift pattern with N at the bottom. Doh!

Will install the crank as soon as possible but judging by how hard it was to remove, I think I'm going go need a crank puller tool. Anyone have one I can borrow?

It's Christmas time and I'm poor so I'm waiting till the new year before I splash out on some crank installer / case splitter tools. In the mean time I've been cleaning and painting bits and pieces to keep the progress going.

Oh and I bought a brand new exhaust header & silencer from China... FOR $15. Postage is around $80, so less than $100 for a brand new exhaust - I wonder if it will actually fit? :compress:

Tusk crank puller tool arrived today and made easy work of installing the crank. Not a cheap tool, but I think it will pay for itself if I'm rebuilding engines frequently.

Can't seem to find any Yamabond locally and Threebond is ridiculously expensive so I may have to order some online before I can seal the case halves.
