Yeah, that's about how often I use it too.

I figure this is the place to ask.

I suck at welding. But chopping shit up is fun.

Where's the best deal on a plasma cutter that isn't a turd?

You'll need to decide if you want a cheap one with no built in air compressor or an all in one with built in air. Which will be a bit less admin /more portable. Most brands will offer both.

We have an excel arc one at work, seems to do the trick.

Local trade zone was good for service on an excel arc tig that got an unwanted drink and needed a new circuit board. Seemed cheap enough to repair and pretty quick turnaround.

External compressor is fine.

They're on Aliexpress for around $662

The other thing to consider is the minimum clean cut thickness you desire.

Excel arc on sale, bit more than the aliexpress price

I picked up a BOC Raptor 40c a few weeks back, I know the Raptor range is meant to be shit (ask any BOC store about the amount of dead or faulty welders returned, I returned a buggy AC/DC tig within a week, but my 160a mig has been flawless for ages), but for $650 with 2 year warranty it's worth the gamble for me.

Edit: nevermind, they've gotten rid of the clearance pricing and put them back up to almost $1100.

You looking for a single or 3-phase setup?

I have a Lincoln Pc60. Blows through 16mm steel and 12mm Ali like butter.  But they are 3ph. They pop up on marketplace every now and again for reasonable money.

Or the Miller Spectrum range are a good bit of kit.

I called into BOC yesterday for some 0.6 wire for my mig. I needed some cutting and sanding (Flap ) disc's as well. It was a good day to call in as they had a special on and the 125mmx1mm cutting discs were 99c each and the flapper discs  $2.99 each. They usually are better priced than others for these items than others anyway. I have seen one flapper disc at Mitre 10 for $ before. I decided not to say how much Mitre 10 charged for them in case Boc saw, LOL.

There's 3ph at mums. But tbh, I'd prefer something I can use at home.

Just pulled the trigger on a xcel arc viper 185 from supercheap's 20% off sale.

Will report back with a review once i've pumped out some bird poop.

Did the same on recent sale, can confirm pretty good so far. Have only done 2-3mm steel for the moment but does what it says on the packet.

Using 0.8mm wire, so looking forward to starting on panels soon

0.8mm may be a little bit big for panel steel if you arent too careful. you could try a 0.6mm for better results but you can tune it down and get the job done unless there is heaps to do

Posted

Probably fine with a gas mix, pure CO2 might be a bit harder. At the opposite end of the scale i've used 0.6mm to weld 12mm reo into a table before. All about the tuning of settings as you say. Spot weld method FTW.

JAPPA CRAP will benefit from thinner wire, if you can deform the panel steel by hand like on 2000s + stuff.

i usually have 0.8 in my welder for everything, but swap it out if im doing more than a little patch on anything stuff like that

Yea going to do some hidden bits first and if it turns out alright, continue with the shown stuff, but otherwise just buy a kilo of 0.6

I did a little course in welding to get done techniques down and they covered some things panel steel things, so hopefully not going in completely blind

I'd been umming and ahhing about getting one of those Xcel-Arc 180 migs from SCA too since I keep needing a bit more grunt than my Raptor 160 has, I missed out on the last 25% off sale (thought it was all weekend, not just Friday night and Saturday), then they put the prices up.

Was looking around for the best deal on one and ended up splurging a bit more $ than I really wanted to and got this today.

Has most of a 5kg roll of .9 in it and will chuck in some new tips etc.

Can bring it north fairly soon too.

Yeah, thats awesome looking machine.

Thats the slightly smaller DC based machine that i was eyeballing @ field days.   i was looking at the multi 230 ac/dc as i want to get a tig for the new shed. theres little price difference between a stand alone tig and this machine. means i could probably sell my 250 mig which is also xcel arc and just have 1 machine not two cluttering up a corner.

sounds pretty fucking great.  my only concern is it does have alot of features, and while sounds amazing for a learner to jump on and go great quickly with a little understanding - looks actually quite complicated for basic bitches like me.

I really wanted that one tbh, but I was already pushing well over my budget and my BOC AC/DC tig is still buzzing away perfectly etc, just wish it had conventual balance settings rather than the Everlast style and a memory function!

Need to move the 160a on now, good little panel and light fab machine etc.
