Blew some compressed air through it as part of checking the wire feed. Turned out that the tension on the wire roll that stops it unravelling was too tight which was causing the wire feed error. Working fine now.

I like this welder better than my old clunker one, but it burns through thin rusty panel steel pretty well even on the lowest setting. Good gap filler though.

All seemingly in cooee of each other but I am not a TIG welder in the slightest so don't have an appreciation for the specs. I want to be a TIG welder though. Not a guru but enough to be able to use it satisfactorily for small scale fabrication of stuff for me ie. puke cans, alum brackets and header work etc. Plus I want to be able to generally fuck around - normal shit. I want something with pulse. I am shopping in and around the 1.5 - 2.5k (give or take) region not counting bottle purchase. Comments please.

Popular Post johnny.race
Couldn't help myself. Thought about it all weekend. Told myself waste of money, don't really need it. Then made the mistake of watching TIG Welding 101 et.al on Youtube and that was it - the voice from the laptop told me I in fact, did need one! And that I needed one as soon as could be had. So this morning, me and my LN106 shot down to Tradezone and plunked down the dosh. Hummed and harrrrd about what bottle size and thought fuck it, get another Eziswap G. Hummed and harrrrd between the Viper180 and this and thought fuck it also. Spending alot of my dosh now - whats some extra? And this is where I am. Need a trolley and have decided to cobble one together from stuff lying around but will need to buy some wheels. The ones on TM look flimsy and I've seen what full G sized bottle does to them. Oh yeah, and did not get a foot pedal. I'm not unpacking this thing for a while yet as I have got other stuff on the go. But yeah, chur. Something to look forward to.
Adoom
@johnny.race Something to catch out new players on a tig. The ground lead goes to the POSITIVE connection, not negative! Don't have the gas flow too high, the guide that came with mine suggested 8 Litres/minute. I went through gas RIDICULOUSLY FAST. I turned mine down to 4 and it still welds fine.
yoeddynz
Yeah @johnny.race check your reg is a good one- often they come with cheapie regs that dont flow smoothly at low rates and flutter. Get the type that has the vertical gauge with a ball. I run my gas as low a rate as I can as its a waste to use any extra. Don't worry about not having a foot pedal. If you can practice and improve using it without it'll be a load better for using the tig in awkward places and positions where there is no way to use a pedal etc. 1
yetchh
How's lift tig? It easy to use to get good welds with it or is hf the only way to go?

Don't need a foot pedal mate has a high frequency start via the push of a button. You will like it!

I wouldn't use gasless to start with, but 99% of my welding is on sub 4mm. 4mm is probably in perfect conditions.

It had a really nice wire feeder but I would say you would struggle to weld anything at all even panel steel or an exhaust 1
kws
Right, so time has come to get ready to chop the Marina up. Looking to convert my Weldtech WT160 to gas, am I on the right track with the below items? Gas - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/coregas-trade-n-go-gas-size-d-mig-shielding-gas_p5910386 Regulator - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/bossweld-argon-dual-stage-regulator-with-flowmeter_p0035679 Wire - https://www.bunnings.co.nz/bossweld-0-6mm-5-0kg-mild-steel-s6-mig-wire_p6330058 Im hoping Bunnings will do Lvl3 contactless pickup on the gas, but we will see I guess. Also, where do I buy sheets of metal for bodywork repair? I believe i want about 0.8mm for panel repair, maybe 1.2mm for the inner sill?

I've bought part-sheets of steel from these guys when they were in Newtown. https://www.kiaorametalindustriesltd.com/ I'd go with 1mm for panel repairs, and the inner sill is probably the same - check the what's left of the original. You can get full sheets from steel and tube etc, it's not terribly expensive. This was my last order early last year.
westy
BOC have a line of cut price welders. https://www.boc.co.nz/shop/en/nz/boc-raptor-200-multiprocess-welder-raptor200multi-p 2 year warranty looks good.
