Snorkpipe's 1986 GSXR 7/12 Build

Stripped down to a bare frame, it fits into the turbo wash at work.

Lots of parts to go for refinishing, and frame is off to have bracing welded into it this weekend. Anyone who's ridden a slabside GSX-R will know why, they're pretty flexible.

Plenty of room for improvement. Cleaned all of the valves today, CC'd the head and dropped it off for a big skim last week, dug some GSXR1100 cams out of the spares box today

First shiny stuff arrived earlier this week. Now these are joined by fork springs and an ignitech.

R1 shock is re-sprung, and needs a shave for clearance in the linkage. Carb parts are off for machining to try and get teh MJN needles to fit.

It's been a busy fortnight. Will upload the in-between pics when I can. Didn't get it done in time to ride to Wellington. Got it finished last night, and we took both bikes out for a ride today. It's fast, will be better with jetting and gearing changes. Jets are too lean, and gears are too tall. Small leak from sump plug, and possible fork oil leak too. It has the handling of my '85 750, and the power of my '03 R1. So much fun

Photo dump:

Swingarm had closed up from bracing, Needed a bit of a stretch to get the chain to line up.

8am on Saturday the bikes were in the same room as each other but nowhere near ready to ride to Wellington

Carbs weren't back in time to reassemble so had to make a set that were under a bench fit and work.

None of the exhaust parts I had would line up other than the period Yoshimura full system I had installed on the 750, so that had to go onto the 1200 and had to mix and match to get an exhaust on the 750. Would like to make a new system of similar dimensions to the Yoshi soon.

Have changed the gearing and played with jetting last week. Was jetted slightly rich at a 135 main. Went worse with a 140 main, will get a set of 130s to try next.

Went -1 on the front sprocket, and +3 on the rear. The gearing is much better meow.

Had an issue with the headlights not going, traced it to a dud connector. Currently I'm undecided as to whether to fix electrical faults as the arise, or just make a new loom with modern connectors.

Have decided I'm going to go for a full re-wire, use new connectors and make a pattern so that I can sell the looms overseas.
Found, bought and fitted an oil temperature gauge. I don't know how accurate it is, but it was showing up to 110degC on the weekend with the mrs on the back and going slow
