Beaubots 1982 ER30 Skyline sedan

Slow day at work, so I can show you the R30 trying on some shoes. After trying some 15s I think 16 or classic style 17s are going to be the go. The front arch is huge so Ill need a bigger wheel to make the car look better - arch gap is the enemy.

These are 15x8 +10, the rim fits nicely on the front axle but i think Ill need stronger offset on the rear.

These are 15x8 0, which are ideal on the rear. Check out the mad race tyres.

After a thorough examination on the hoist, everything seems to be in order. The body is really sound which Im extremely happy about and aside from some small oil leaks, tired glow plugs, the gearbox chatter and worn diff bearings (which @Slacker_Sam. told me about) its fairly mechanically sound too.

After finding the RH rear makita one way was not quite as captive as originally thought

rsz_20170917_195123.jpg.265cc0787b9989e26ed4661e1dde5861.jpg

and that the lower bushes on the rear shocks were in fairly average state, I got into my first free mod, using the original front shocks from my old Autech 26 R32

A quick tophat swap and viola, new(er) healthy springs and shocks.

No droop required

Soon Ill tell you all about getting carried away on Yahoo.jp

Nothing Major this weekend, went in all guns blazing and lost interest after getting a pile of dirt in my eyes (which I assume came from Hanmeet)

New Diff bearings and front shocks

Hoists make handy for additional garage space

Diff out, dirt face

I might make the effort to actually do the rebuild this week..... maybe....

I was motivated for an hour or so after work,

diffsplosion

20170925_171529.jpg.d74c4f3ad3c3f4da8b34b1e9426e758d.jpg

The bearings werent as bad as Id suspected, so hopefully I havent just spent $300 for no reason. I checked the wheel bearings and driveshaft centre hanger while the diff was out and theyre all quiet, hopefully it was in the diff and not just a second noise from the transmission transferring down the body. I tried to scab a subaru r180 LSD nugget off a mate but hes hoarding them for his silly drift subaru.

Bam and the diff is one

20170925_180019.jpg.11b0bbc6af327c1c9ec9d59107ea016a.jpg

Just gotta put in the axle seals and stick it back in the car now.

Weekends updates:

I did effectively waste $275 on parts as it appears the actual gearset wear is the cause of the noise (322000kms will do that though). Oh well, its got new bearings.

Stuck an old race muffler on in place of @Slacker_Sam.s straight pipe, which made a marked improvement.

And Ive also determined that the R32 front shocks aren't quite the right height (trailing arms are bottoming out) and definitely aren't the correct spring rate, even the diesel makes the rear end squat terribly.

Back to the drawing board.

Hello, been slack, including taking photos.

As mentioned last post, r32 front are no good for R30 rear so I needed to get something else, enter (first) parts car

20171006_204145_resized.thumb.jpg.9f5c83bf24a134b055362106581530e3.jpg

Wife wasnt particularly amused when I said I was going to check out a diff and returned with a bare rolling shell (read race car) but for $200 who can complain.

The shell has a locked r200, disc brake rear, healthy rear shocks with lowered cobras, s13 front subframe and hubs (excellent) 3 16inch mags (scrap reimbursement) with good tyres and one steely with a  brand new Supercat, not bad for $200.

Swapped in the rear suspension and replaced my worn out tyre with the Supercat, YAY WOF!

20171010_173132_resized.thumb.jpg.57a38e2adef4f2c7f48f7662cafd07d8.jpg

After missing out on some incorrect offset Watanabes these popped up

20171019_090227_resized.thumb.jpg.2439db80d1a1ab147ceec35cdf7c15d4.jpg

Ive always been a fan of mk1s, unfortunately it appears the higher offset pair may be beyond repair. It looks like the mount face it no longer true, or the wheel face is buckled. Time will tell I suppose. Sold the silly tyre size to @Fresh  For WOF/skid purposes.

Also, acquired some potential future suspension components.

Although the gearbox sounds even worse after that.

I then proceeded to lay a giant gear oil pentagram on Surfabs driveway, DW I cleaned it up.20171026_201404.thumb.jpg.141fbfe4ac9caf319d949b99a7d870b1.jpg

Theres the man himself, strapping the dieseasaline down to his swanky new trailer so he could kindly tow me all the way from Woolstain to the town of the future.

Looks like the next step will be happening sooner than anticipated, more cogs for ultimate cruising efficiency.

Ideally I wouldve used the nice alloy altezza crossmember and made new box mounts on the floor pan, but there wasnt quite enough clearance to the current exhaust system, so steel plate additions it is.

20171217_205758_resized.thumb.jpg.6a75234fc12600aa5512299a3f2ba0e6.jpg

The Er30 has stupid rubber doughnuts between the crossmember and the floor, which meant the extra leverage would tilt the mount to the rear. Nothing some steel bar couldnt fix (its hidden under the base washers).

We are moving house shortly, so I really needed to get the old girl moving. Rfbbie from JD fabrication kindly lent me his SQ j160 shifter setup from his AE. Its a nicely made little unit and puts the stick in a near perfect spot in the R30

Frank smashed a driveshaft together for me on Wednesday, the circle is now complete.

Took it for a spin, 3rd and 4th are super close but all in all a great success, no noises, no leaks and an 800rpm drop at 100k

+5 to efficiency

Soooo, after putting a GPS speedo in the car, it turns out I lied.

The j160 5th gear is 1:1 and 6th is like 0.879, so if anything I may have gained a few RPMs at 100k.....

Time to find a taller diff!

Did some things. I purchased some SSR MK1s and the seller did a bit a swifty  as two of the rims are badly buckled in the rim face and cant be repaired, thus unusable. I scored a pair of balloon tyres off a car through work and theyve been sitting in the workshop for a few months. I also bought 3x 16x7 f8 Watanabes, theyre weak offset and pretty dishless, but for $120 I couldnt resist.

I did some wheel/style trialing

20180220_161314_resized.thumb.jpg.5d4cc1632ad2d9eb26ae9682370a0a81.jpg

The Wats definitely want some spacer action

20180220_163130_resized.thumb.jpg.1b2034a4026cb417adcfa3d058b41c83.jpg

These are the two good A type mk1s, I honestly thought Id like the Wats better, but the balloon tyre drum lids are far more rad than I expected.

Im driving it drift spec at the moment due to my single type wheel shortage.

Anyone know of some 15x7 A disc Mk1s for sale?????

Painted a thing (badly - Nats rush)

New balloons to replaced the 175s on the front

20180405_175442_resized.thumb.jpg.99eefba7542b1c449c4ab88316d33b95.jpg

I lost interest in fitting the body kit before Nats as it required a lot more hole drilling than I felt I could be bothered with.

After battling round the PENInSula at Nats Ive decided its time for more powers and better speakers.

After more than 2 years, I'm here to update my thread.

The Ironmask bonnet arrived from Japan and I had some small dents tidied up by a panel beater mate. But I have decided to save the Ironmask front for another future project.

20190313_135204.jpg.51baa4f0b17fc9d88fc15fc43a044514.jpg20190313_135653.jpg.1a2ec152bcebe9b188e04251a9707330.jpg

Id run the car as a daily till mid 2019 when I decided it was time for a birthday, the paint was getting pretty shabby.

20180902_001950.jpg.b03f674dd690d429c92d327e895a6b97.jpg20181021_121204.jpg.1d2d9d9ad922cfd4483769ce891f1c83.jpg20181116_183341.jpg.3fd7396e5f292659d1917c1d3aed657d.jpg

Also new(Sep 2018, yes Its been a while) house and garage who dis

20181117_132821.jpg.5caac9881fee090218126af6e6650fc0.jpg

So I decided I'd like to have a go at painting a car, I always liked watching my drift cars getting painted so I figured fuck it lets have a crack. I decided to go to bare metal on the exterior

20190423_135452.jpg.02329c15a865bf3f49fcb0dffc5b9256.jpg20190423_135502.jpg.51a2cf2cea8b571548c8944b3afe7877.jpg20190423_174511.jpg.3eb02a1a7db5514190f426d0da9f16d0.jpg20190423_174520.jpg.d6f4a2fe7282dac0233e8df3d1afe805.jpg20190425_085419.jpg.6dfdc3c69771a229c20cdfb8f34aba93.jpg20190425_085440.jpg.6de268228f28ef4c9e3633c63c11b098.jpg20190425_175533.jpg.6d76bd42010553e0b8b204961687e761.jpg20190425_180529.jpg.d2d5621240cdb59eb663228c5f37b815.jpg20190426_135915.jpg.07f1e471e15b816b670a499fdedf7cc9.jpg20190426_135926.jpg.1d6b339f77a22cc668ddc6c01f502a8e.jpg

And then gave it a couple coats of etch primer to prevent surface corrosion

20190428_111455.jpg.73e1a83e69d45388d2e1668b09f2104d.jpg20190428_111502.jpg.9728da1e44132186b8aa156b9f9f4e09.jpg20190428_111445.jpg.ab8bfcaa32a3c5bb858a5a14469599f1.jpg20190426_180553.jpg.5e4e1672470ac041b6c826192cd82061.jpg20190426_180546.jpg.90e2f2e3f77e2daac89f73bf9fd25487.jpg

I ended up pulling the screens and inevitably found a bit of rust, the front screen had been refitted by someone with clear RTV and it didn't exactly keep the moisture out. A bit of a wire wheel, rust converter and some welding and it was sorted.

20190510_173302.jpg.75ee9cdba0297b3d17dd1ebe84ae4739.jpg

There had been a skim of bog on both the left doors, so I sanded it out and re applied it where necessary, pretty good given how old the car is.

Started with Priming the shuts and loose panels

Doors were up next, started with the shuts, gave the lower halves a lick of black along with the window frames.

Chuck all the panels back on for a looksee, and a quick sand

20190630_142135.jpg.0b4a7bd1fa4441cfcb1c855e108b1777.jpg20190901_140942.jpg.51f0b51f043827add1171d7c0e3c05ea.jpg20190912_115125.jpg.06716b31937325a00eec7bcad4226e06.jpg20190912_134532.jpg.a26cad1e7f1437e70f54834b0606dcea.jpg20190912_134546.jpg.a12c3b675aad5ec35837f43662af7e0e.jpg

Next up, I moved everything in the shed and knocked up a makeshift booth using some steel cables and plastic drop sheets and had a crack at the doors and nose cone

20190915_144115.jpg.76a492632410be4f1f7e7350fb254cbc.jpg20190915_144148.jpg.e1681082f14793b6eeefde193fac1265.jpg20190914_185001.jpg.86cc2ca896b8989d4023d41b54e5bb45.jpg20190914_184920.jpg.0315ca34148b102cdd64f24ce61099b6.jpg

I didn't mix up quite enough paint to get two full coats on everything, so I had a few dusty spots on the RH doors. On another note nothing attracts bugs like fresh car paint, landed right in the middle of the RHF guard, whats a little more sanding.

So for my next trick I went all in, mixed the remainder of the paint and took the gun to the whole car.
