ThePog Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 I am planning out a long term project and want to start researching suitable engines. It will start with a Dyna or Atlas, and maybe the engines available in these will be sweet, but I am probably going to be looking for a reasonable amount of grunt, so a 2.4 2L wont cut it. I want to keep it as simple as possible, so it would need mechanical injection (or easily converted to it), 4 cylinder for the length, maybe a turbo, no electronics at all. It would need to be reasonably grunty, parts readily available and cheap and bulletproof... Any suggestions? Quote
M.H. Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Isuzu 4bd1t. 3.9l 4cyl diect injected turbo. Super strong, last for ever and capable of making serious power I have one that im fitting to my 110 land rover 2 Quote
smokin'joe Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 B series Toyota, as fitted to Dyna/40-60 L/C. unsure how old the latest version is though. may be better with the Isuzu above Quote
Yowzer Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 13B-T? Ya can convert a 1KZ to mech inject if you want, or turbo a 5L. What is its intended purpose? I've made some decent power from a turbo 3L without damaging the engine but tbh it might be under a bit too much stress for heavy duty work. It could drag 3Ton of car and trailer very happily though. HighLUX Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Yeah 1kz with 4m40 pump on it and intercooler 3 Quote
M.H. Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Also the isuzu engines have proper truck gearboxes behind them with cable operated shifters and a drum hand brake 3 Quote
Popular Post ThePog Posted August 11, 2017 Author Popular Post Posted August 11, 2017 1kz would have to be a winner if it was able to be converted, they go hard in a prado in my experience. For context, this is more or less what I want to achieve; Start with a double cab 4wd Dyna/Atlas, graft landcruiser/safari coil sprung axles onto it, move the rear axle back a bit so you can get a proper sized deck. No crane. Build a cabin for the back that can be jacked up and removed in a jiffy. Then it can be my forever workshop vehicle/bug out machine/camper and I will never need another vehicle in my life. I have spoken to a cert man about it and it needs a 1D class certifier, but it should be straightforward although time consuming..... 11 Quote
nickrock Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 I have a 4be2 in shed ( spare for my trucks) if you want dimensions etc ,my understanding is that the 3.3 3.6 3.9 4.2 are all pretty much interchangeable Quote
nickrock Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 I have a 4x4 Isuzu truck about the same size as the photo was used for towing a 300mm chipper in the bush ,I'm looking for a new deck for it preferably a tipping one Quote

M.H. Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 1kz would be such a bad choice, will definitely want a truck based engine. What type of transfer case are you thinking of using 1 Quote
ThePog Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 Yea I had second thoughts after posting that. I want something truckish, low stressed but with some grunt. The 100 series dyna 4wd system/transfer cases are mighty according to the local truck wrecker. I had a serious chat with him about what would make a good base. He did not rate the equivalent Izuzu, and was indifferent to the Nissans. I am a bit of a toyota fag myself. Quote
