@bigfoot I believe you have already volunteered for this and I am sure @Threeonthetree would help round up a few Auckland members for a Pick a Part mission.

I just noticed this while looking at the photos again, maybe whoever removed the distributor wasn't as careful as they should have been and damaged this cap. Funny how I didn't notice it when I was looking at the actual engine yesterday. Probably no big deal but I wish people were more careful when removing bits at Pick a Part, you never know hat the next dude is going to want.

Have a look on "probetalk" forum - yes dodgy name I know but those guys know these engines inside out and there is a good thread with every detail possible even when it gets to the later hybrid motors where anything from the parts bin was thrown in

and they love turbos ..

weak link on KLze seems to be valve retainers

and facing the cam clamps to bring the clearances down and retain oil pressure to the crank

and Yeah ya gotta remove valve cover and undo the clamp to remove distributor - if it's just the top clamp damaged then no big deal - cam does not run in that one

That damaged cap shouldn't be too much of an issue seeing as I have a whole engine I can use for spares if need be. I was planning on using the springs and retainers out of it to swap into the new motor anyway. I know what you mean about mixing and matching these engines now too. I had another look at mine today and realised the intake manifold is the ZE spec one after all, with the square intake runners, but the heads themselves are DE with the oval intake ports. That means there is a big step that the incoming air hits as it goes from manifold to head which can't be any good for airflow I'm sure.

So I'm starting to look seriously at how we're going to pull this engine from the car at pick a part. Dad and I pulled my current motor in a couple of ~8 hour days so I'm thinking four or five of us should be able to pull it in a day fairly easily. I have a mate who is keen to come and help but the more the merrier.

Tool wise I have a full Bahco socket set and other assorted tools. We found the handiest tool was the impact gun but it's air powered so I won't be able to bring that. If someone has a battery powered one then it would make our lives much easier.

I'm looking at heading down on a Sunday at the moment. I'm free any Sunday but I'm currently looking at next weekend being the 5/10/17. I know @1963 AP5 is keen and he said @bigfoot and @Threeonthetree might be able to help as well. Is there anyone else that can lend a hand? If so when is a good day for everyone? Hell I'd even go down this Sunday if people are available. Any suggestions are welcome.

Looks like it'll be easier to plan to head down next weekend. Turns out I'm not as prepared as I thought. It should give people more time to figure out if they can help out or not. I'll keep everyone posted over the next week as to any updates.

Yeah that bellhousing bolt does not line up like mine does ... thought that cad drawing looked like they were further off must be a difference between rx8 and early early rx7 pattern ? Bugger if too many bolts clash

I'm pretty sure that Rx8 boxes dont bolt straight up to non-Renesis 13b engines. So possibly the bellhousing bolt pattern is different?

Looking good!  Take your time getting them holes right. You'll only need to do it once and then your plate will be good every time you change engines, boxes etc

I know of a car down here, a 626 with a 2.5 that a friend was given. He's been offered $100 by the local fire brigade to use it for a display so the engine could be going spare- I'll ask because I want to collect sensors etc off it.

Of course getting it up your way is where the cost comes in though....

I have asked but its looking like the fire service are planning on selling the car on afterwards to a wrecker. These engines then head overseas (or so my local wreckers told me of the mazda engine I spotted their pile two days ago of which I wanted to pilfer bits from..)

I'll keep a look out for ya though.

One day these engines will become so rare and they'll be worth like $50 or more!!!!!
