Hurmeez
I accounted for the shrinkage of the ally by finding out how much aluminium is known to shrink from casting and increasing the size of the model by that much. There was a bit of porosity and some voids that had to be ground out and welded up but that was more down to the quality of the printing more than anything. If I were to do it again I'd do much more work on making nice rounded corners on everything to help the flow, rather than smoothing sharp edges with a die grinder like I'm going to have to. Also I'd try to get a higher quality print out of a better printer. It was made with a home built printer after all, and that showed in the final finish of the model. The port shapes aren't quite bang on but there's plenty of meat there to grind out to port match it nicely. If you look at it objectively the cost was really high at $500 for what it is, but it was more about the experiment on what was possible with the cool tech I had available to me. Thanks
63Ragtop
Very cool stuff! easy when you're just reading it quickly on the interwebs huh? lots of work in this old esky, well done. You're very lucky having a old man with the skills, tools, knowledge and mates he has, I had to bumble about with shit for years and you're still ahead of me I think! Hopefully I can do the same for my kids one day. keep it up, great reading this thread.

Hurmeez
Thanks mate. I never expected to have to do this much when we first got it but I'm enjoying it and it'll just make it all the more of an accomplishment when I do get it on the road.
azzurro
Re the door/fender gap, if all the othrr gaps are good run a bead on the trailing edge of the fender to close the gap up. Top work man
Hurmeez
I did think about that but I figured it would be easier to build it up with a small amount of bog rather than risk making big holes as I tend to do with the mig. It's still an option though if the bog doesn't work out.
CUL8R
We can do Cobra springs for around $160 + freight to you? Normal retail is $220 - even that is cheaper than $300 odd someone has quoted you. Sorry no personal experience on the Coilover welding though
Hurmeez
That sounds a lot better actually. It means I can spend more on go fast parts for the motor.
1963 AP5
I'd say if you have a real desire to do the V6 thing just go ahead an do it straight away. If you get it on the road with a different engine there is a risk that the V6 will sit in the corner unloved and you will decide that you are perfectly satisfied with the 4cyl (that is what I would probably do anyway). It will probably be easier to do the conversion while the car is in pieces as well rather than trying to nip and tuck a finished car to make things fit. I believe those V6 engines go very well in small cars like the Escort so should be sweet! You have probably seen this already......... Transom
Yes go the v6 --- can get kl to rx8 adapter plate from Crapengineering on Facebook in the uk Claire has made a few before - and the flywheel spacer to match other hurdles are the sump and the intake and looks like you have been practicing for that on the pinto need to lose the dizzy off the kl for space so that means standalone ecu of some type and the egr blank plate that sticks out most on the back rh side can be cut back further too read Alex's viva thread 3 more times then there are a few more builds I can point you at
Hurmeez
That was the video that started the whole thing . I think you're right about the order of operations with doing the V6 straight off. I think I'll be better able to decide once I actually have the motor mocked up in position.
Hurmeez
Thanks @Transom. I was thinking I'll go with some sort of megasquirt so that should solve the distributor issue. I'm reading through Alex's thread now but it's a real bummer about photobucket being such a prick. I'd be happy for any help you could offer . Transom
Yeah I need to redo the pics in my thread too and add the recent ones of engine mounts and chopping off the egr port rx8 box should fit nicely in the tunnel as it's the same Aisin gearbox in later mx5s (different bell housing for rotary ) and for some light reading 54+ pages on rwd klv6 https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=434146

I have no real qualms about breaking it and selling it as parts. If people really felt strongly enough about saving it they would have bought it already since it's been up in tardme for months at this point. Regarding the flywheel, I'm currently planning to use an rx8 clutch and flywheel setup modified to bolt up to the kl crankshaft. That is what the guy from crapengineering has done. This way if I keep the flywheel in the same relative position to the box as stock I can use the stock rx8 starter position, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, slave cylinder etc. which should save a lot of headaches.
