SOHC
This is interesting if you can be bothered reading it and is important if you have an old manual car http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

Someone was saying ti would take 800 years to eat the brass but that's only if its not driven.
SOHC
I don't know what they were using in my FoMoCo gearbox but its totally black inside from the sulphur, but syncros seem ok
Transom
Know some people with old halfcab buses that have the brass worm gear drive diffs they were using castor ? Oil vege based ?
kws
I had a big pissaround trying to find the right oil for my old NC MX5 6spd box, because apparently they hate GL5 as it messes up the brass syncros, but finding a proper GL4 in the right spec wasnt easy. Cant remember if i even bothered doing it.
fuel
Can't use GL-5 in Mitsubishi transaxles before the early 90s for the same bronze eating reasons. The RWD and later stuff is fine with GL-5 though.
Hemi
If it has any yellow or white metal GL5 no good. That article probably said that. Yolo.
RUNAMUCK
So that means don't out gl5 into anything with a warner synchro? LIke all A series, ca18, rb, Sr have brass synchro rings. funny how you think newer shit is gonna be better. might switch back to DOT 2 as well lol.
ajg193
What about GL-4+? Penrite seems to reckon it is safe with synchros, but since when can you trust an oil company...

GuyWithAviators
Bumping up an old thread, does anyone know which brands do an 80w-90 GL-4 gear oil? I know Castol VMX 80 is GL-4 but that may be too thin for my Land Cruisers H55F transmission.
kicker
Do you mean VMX 80?
GuyWithAviators
Just now, kicker said: Do you mean VMX 80? Yep, oops.
kicker
Tricky one, I don't know many GL4 oils, I have only used VMX 80 and Valvoline Duragear 75/80 edit: and Redline MT90
kws
MT90 is the recommended oil in NZ for the Miata gearboxes, which are known to throw a wobbly over GL5. Will be getting some for my shitbox NB shortly.
GuyWithAviators
Anyone got any ideas? Or know if my gearbox will be okay with 80w? Not sure if it’ll be happy shifting when warm.
Yowzer
Redline Lightweight Shockproof Or as kws said, Redline MT-90 if you don't wanna spend as much. But I highly recommend the Shockproof.
Threeonthetree
@GuyWithAviators http://www.lubenz.co.nz/transmission-oil/140-transgear-4-80w90.html http://www.lubenz.co.nz/content/22-vertex Have not personally used their stuff but it's marketed toward the truck/fleet market. That top link is specifically a GL-4 so will be ideal for you. Shouldn't be too pricey either. Perhaps @Dolan might have some other GL-4 alternatives through his company dealzzzz.
CaMpylobacter
nah I only really run with castrol and they're not great for gl4 stuff as stated I buy all my specialty stuff thru vertex/elf via me bro's account.
SOHC
Another interesting thing I have been reading about is that the later transmission oils even tho they are yellow metal safe have friction modifiers that cause the old bronze syncros to slip and nor grab properly witch cuts there life in half.
