vivaspeed
Looks rad. Good job. Is graffiti a problem in your hood?
sheepers
Na. It's pretty tame round here.
sheepers
My mate Olaf gave me a hand to make the big gate so that's done. Then I ran power and sensor wires to the motor drive base plate and Nick the sparky gave me a hand to concrete the pad for the rail.
kseries.rookie
Lovely fence! Can't help but feel like you're shutting yourself away from the garage for thing to be broken into without your knowledge? Any reason why you didn't go across the driveway and put a gate there? yetchh
I was thinking that too..
fuel
probably because a car or two is parked in the drive and the drive isn't long enough to have them in front of the gate?
sheepers
Yep, that and an 11meter long retracting gate is a fucking ballache on many levels
yetchh
But fun on an engineering level.. ay.
Popular Post sheepers
Got the gate rail in and put in the guides. Gate works mint. Today I'll get the motor drive sorted so it works off the remote. 17
sheepers
Got the motor drive installed and put the rack on the gate. All wired up and working mint. Put some primer on the gate because it's kiln dried timber and I don't want it to move around to much when it gets wet. 7
mutiny
That looks shit hot. I've got a pair of opening gates I'm gonna replace with a slider. I was gonna weld up a frame from box section . Never even considered building it from timber. Will be interesting to see how it holds up. Are you gonna put some nail plates on the joins? xsspeed
Sheepy, deets on gate setup please. It's the one (of three) things I need to do still on front fence. I had assumed a metal frame but timber would be more in line with the look I have - ship lap with large main posts and top rail
sheepers
the gate is nothing fancy, 100x50 kiln dried timber on edge, as you can probably see. the 4 external corners and the horizontal middle beam are jointed with a domino machine which puts a dowel about 40 x 30 x 140 long into the joint. the diags are birds mouthed and screwed with big fuck off screws going through the joints vertically. palings are screwed to the frame to add rigidity. its fairly solid for a timber deal and was pretty easy to make. 2
Popular Post sheepers
Painted a fence. Used an airless sprayer. So easy, would trade again. Haven't got enough paint to do inside so that will have to wait. 22
xsspeed
Did you build the gate yourself? Not familiar with a domino machine will have to look into it. Is there science behind angles/position of middle rail? What's your length? I have approx 4m to cover
sheepers
yea i built the gate with my mate Olaf helping me. he had all the fancy tools and he made the birds mouths fit like a glove but its not rocket science. we were going to use bomac angle brackets to brace the corners but they weren't required. you could totally substitute the domino joints for external bomac brackets and it would be sweet. the gate is 4500 long and the diagonals come down so they are on top of the wheels but they could go anywhere. the center horizontal is above center for no other reason than aesthetics. it just looked better with it closer to the top, that's it. the gate is plenty strong enough, in a strong wind it will maybe move enough to hit the guide but thats more down to the distance from the top guides, and the guides on the top are only so good. i dont think it would make any difference if the gate was steel. just make one, its easy.
kseries.rookie
That gate is bad ass! Where did you get the hardware for it? I'm wanting to do something very similar but wouldn't mind getting a realistic idea on cost from a real life situation
