junglesponge
Hey guys need a little help in diagnosing a issue I am having with my gearbox/clutch. I have a 1968 mk2 cortina,1300 gt cam and a 1600 manual 4 speed floor shifter gearbox. It was orginally a column shift. It has had full engine rebuild, skimmed flywheel new clutch and pressure plate. Gearbox has had no work done. Ok now you have the info heres the story and issue. So put all together runs well but a bit crunchy into gear. Got master and slave replaced with new hydraulic line. No more crunchy only in reverse. So went driving and every time I put foot down on clutch I would get a whine but disappeared once driving or out of gear clutch off. So got grumpy removed gearbox and put in new thrust bearing hoping for the best to no avail. Went for good drive today going along at 100kph going good still whine when sitting at lights but after driving at100kph for a while thought it would be good to pull over check under hood for issues. Once I got back in I struggled to get it back into gear but once I got some speed up it went into 3rd and 4th easy butthenstruugled at lights to get into first. Can anyone help me? Would this be a gearbox issue or a clutch one. I am starting to lose my mind. Any help appreciated

locost_bryan
How's the clutch fluid level? When you put it in first at rest, do the revs drop or the car start to creep? Sounds like the clutch might not be fully disengaging?
junglesponge
Hey Bryan, I checked the level and its fine but I thought I might measure the movement of the fork and from disengaged to engage it moves only 15mm. Does this seem right? When I put in gear it doesn't move so seems like its disengaging. I have been through 3 different master Cylinders and had my slave rebuilt. I extended the rod so it just is off the pressure plate fingers. Any thoughts?
ajg193
How's your spigot bearing in the flywheel look/feel? Also that oil you are running claims to be API GL5/GL6. Your gearbox will need GL4. GL5 has additives which bind to the brass of the synchronizer rings and causes extreme slipperiness combined with synchronizer corrosion/pitting. Get that stuff out of there as soon as possible and make sure it is flushed. If you have driven for any length of time it would pay to pull the gearbox to bits and clean the synchronizers thoroughly (they turn black with GL5 and will remain dirty unless scrubbed). Basically, GL5 will make your gearbox shift gears like shit and cause rapid wear of any brass components. Castrol VMX is GL4. I did the same with my KP gearbox... @NickJ will back me up on this.

I'd also heard that GL5 kills older gearboxes, it's also a no-no for Marina and Triumphs, MGBs, etc.
