Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Still cranking away on it but it's too dark by the time I'm finished to take a pic or its plain too boring. Glued a headlining in and trimmed off he excess that's to sit under the screen rubbers, vinyl spray touched up.. looks alright. stereo installed, kick panels in, steering wheel with horn, new swaybar link bushes (mounts were still nice, and rubber) painted everything as I went, adjusted front wheel bearings, installed larger 3-core radiator thanks to mint16, drilled holes in front panel to suit captive nuts on rad surround and hoses had enough slack to line up. Front panel was well used as has had some alloy radiator in the past and a panel-steel piece screwed in to direct airflow. old rad was pretty smoked, functioned but not for much longer. took great joy in cleaning the overspray haze off windows! The really fine steel wool worked a treat. Got my boot badge, cleaned with electric toothbrush and installed. Was scared it would snap so took my time. Brought NOS bonnet rod grommet and clip off trademe as well. Door rubber arrived today so poked that into the channel and glued and taped the rest in place..Waited about an hour each door and then shut each to let set. Warrant booked for Wednesday. And I managed to get all the cars in and out of the garage!

Mr.Mk1
Started running like a ball bag after fanging away from work on Friday, limped it home and had a look..number 4 plug was loose, dizzy was loose and the accelerator pump seal was split. decided to pull the rebuilt carb down, clean and and reassemble. Came out well, ran a lot better. mate mentioned the tallest might be crook, and certainly were noisey so set them too. Then it was onto the dizzy. It had a vanette on in it, which has a screw on cap which is aids to replace so wasn't that worried about chucking it. The rotor was worn on an angle and the cap terminals were eaten. Grabbed a new cap, rotor and points from work and set to it. i had a random spare A12 one and a decent A14 one, but the cap on A14 was larger and the vac advance would hit the block and not adjust enough. so the random one got the green light, cleaned up and plonked in, winner! Goes a lot better. The. An advance isn't great so will see if I can remedy that (suck the hose and it works., unplugged from carb no change). Also threw a new thermostat in cause it wasn't quite right..was a fairly old one I found. found a good condition glovebox lid in the spares so cleaned and painted that. Chipped the old paint off the spare dash pad, will vinyl dye that this week and put in eventually. threw some rubber floor mats in the front.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Still chipping away. spare dash I got was still supple on every side but top. Will swap that over at Easter I think, could be a bitch to get in and out in a rush. managed to find a deluxe badge!! Was pretty decent so cleaned and painted. Will stick on this week. have another one, a script badge and some US spec red tail light lenses on their way over. scored a brand new carpet set for $150..its bright red but I'll dye it black. boot badge acquired and installed.

Popular Post Mr.Mk1
In the weekend I fixed the divot in the roof. There was a high ridge in the back corner and at the time I decided it was more work than I wanted to do to fix it so left it. But something was crook and it got bigger after paint. so evened that out and sprayed it, also did under the bonnet, sides of bonnet and the inner guards and upper firewall. Could see the primer in the bonnet gap and it was bugging me. And GC nosco me his double sided tape so lobbed on the pillar badges. I toyed with the idea of centralising them and moving them up ala mazda, but went with the factory placement in the end. Im onto the final deluxe badge for the boot, will be a box of Woodstocks if it's right.
Mr.Mk1
The exhaust has been pissing me off, muffler hangs low and catches the train track crossing and some driveways. Where it was, was about 3 inch forward of the floor recess under the rear seat, and would hit the body under max gear grabbing. So I cut it out and added a couple of inches from the back, to the front and that set it in the gap where I was happy. Had to move the hanger bracket too. Some slag burnt my moustache so all I can smell is burnt hair, it's average.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
I was waiting for the long weekend to cross some bigger jobs off the list and managed to! - Put good dash pad in - Cleaned and painted instrument cluster - Cleaned and rust killed floors and etch painted, sealed up screw holes and seams, rubber bungs in - Cleaned and painted glovebox hinge panel (left as much as I could of the factory sticker with key info and tyre pressure/fuel chart) - Made covers for the rear wheel arches, lower B pillars and exposed parts of the floor the carpet does not cover with some patterned plastic sheet - Painted dash top and the area under the rear screen which are visible. - New carpets - Vinyl died seats. Don't know how long it will last but we will see. The cans sprayed too narrow so I emptied them into spray gun and got a great even application. - Put stereo in properly - Epoxy glued splits in the centre console - Factory accelator pedal back on Still need to make a shifter boot and pick up another demister vent from a mate.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Well now it looks good in and out its time to make it move faster! (Yes i still haven't cut and buffed it because I feel I can put it off for a lot longer X-D) As part payment for hacking the rust out of Bart's Val, he's given me this A15. I got the headers a while back in preparation. I tore it to bits today and she is a pearler! Still standard everywhere and bores are sweeter than a hot damn. Im making moves to grind a wee cam to help it along and will run GT 323 twin carbs on a modified manifold. They are a veeery similar design to standard Datsun but likely updated a bit, mine have airbox and linkages and all that shit to make it easier. (sitting on a spare A12) It's a bit like the twin K-series Toyota carb conversion which used to be the go-to mod when they were more common.
Mr.Mk1
I squashed a non-dominant finger yesterday so didn't weld rust like I was going to, instead felt light dutys included cleaning and engine stuff. Everything is cleaned, bolts are still soaking, Block is honed and painted, pistons spotless and new rings on, mate took my front cover away to bead blast. I'll likely throw the bearings in this week and button up crank. Also pulled the Mazda carbs apart and cleaned, came up good so now to bribe someone to fizz together a manifold. Cam and followers are away to be gooderized and head stripped for a skim to bump up compression a little.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Pretty randomly our rep at work got to yarning with a codge who wanted rid of some Datsun stuff his son left in behind. $100 got me a set of new crow valve springs, 2 A12 heads and set of barely used valves and sparkie plugs. At least $300 worth realistically. Hoped one would have a rocker shaft cause all mine aren't quite 100% but alas. I also decided that cam bearings would be cheap insurance since mine weren't mint so got a set and a spare just in case but overthought it bitched out on installing them myself in case I wrecked the new cam soon after firing it up..they are buried inside the block, and scope for disaster is wide, so dropped the block and head off at reconditioners.

Popular Post Mr.Mk1
I got this golf lip for it, the valence I used had already had one on so I left the holes in when I painted it for this reason. it sits high, not hideous but I will lower it and see. That will change the angle too. i scrubbed clean and painted the sump yesterday

Popular Post Mr.Mk1
I'm back! had another jobs taking up all my spare time but that's out of the shed and I can forge on with Mine. in the interim, in no particular order I got some dobi springs and mk1 golf gas shocks, front of car bottoms out pretty bad when cornering and bumping. Probably doesn't have bump stops in there but may as well upgrade, they were cheap. Need to shorten the struts to accept the shorter golf shocks. nick the fab wizard at MFS has the manifolds and carbs to cobble together. I got Rob to spec up a cam and kelford ground it, gave stuff to ERS in tai tapu- head planed around a mil, he skimmed the block for free 'cause it looks good and the gasket will grip nice', and installed the cam bearings. brendon gave me a stack of rockers to go through and find a good one so I did, pulled it apart and cleaned up ready. picked engine up last nite so today I cleaned up the ports and casting marks, cleaned the head, lapped the valves, loaded the springs and put the rockers on. also cleaned and polished the crank, rehoned, cleaned out the block and galleries. i was in the mood to assemble it but a mate is keen to see how they go together so I'll hopefully do that this week.

Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Got the thing assembled...mostly Heres the cut and shut manifold we made, came out wicked, thanks nick! Was choked by the gasket set missing 2 sump parts and a rocker cover gasket... ACL set had lots of spare Manifold and hotbox gaskets and missing the vital ones. Permaseal has EVERYTHING! the set was left over from when engine builder supplied gasket set for wife's A14. And I too had permaseal from work. That and no crank pulley bolt. Pinched the wife's one while assembling and luckily remembered to give it back.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Good day today, went well filled and tidied 20-something holes that weren't needed, cleaned and sanded, masked up ready to spray some red tomorrow. Also painted the horn, brackets, regulator, wiper motor etc. chopped out some wires that went to nowhere, trimmed back the old fuel return.
