Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Everyone knows the car, most have been on white-knuckled joyrides in it, and it's a stalwart of the oldschool/nzdatsun culture. Bart Simpsons supercharged 'Death trap' 1200. If this car could talk, it wouldn't, What for the crippling PTSD. Its been Molotov cocktailed, in car chases, travelled at autobahn speeds, drag raced close to 13 second passes and all manner of in-between. When Bart approached me to tidy it up for impending sale, it just so happpend to be when I was looking to sell my wagon to blow all the proceeds on my Escort. Well I've never had a car younger than me, so make a habit of having 40-50 year old daily drivers, and I needed transport in between. Rather than buying something in a pinch and not really liking it, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to grab a model I've always liked, and have another A-series car, which is generally a joy. It was cheap, I had to keep telling myself this. Came with reg and warrant, and still certed for things like a roll cage and A14. Has a rev-counter dash and coupe centre console added. Driveline has been returned to standard, go fast bits went into a race car. Suits me fine as daily driven and less to go wrong. Came with a swag of spares , and that roll cage! I got a few weeks into December and couldn't do a lot until my holidays. I cleaned the fuck out of the outside and wheeled it into the shed. Can't find the after shot of engine bay but it came up well. Didn't do a lot until coming back from Xmas, so on Boxing Day I got into it. Came with straight spare guards which weren't flared but still a bit rusty. The drivers side rear or guard was good in white but bad in yellow so.. And the gap was massive so added on to the door.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
The rear arches had been hacked to fit drag slicks and it was high on my agenda to make them more original looking. As you can see it was shy about 30mm of arch. So I made these out of sections of some rooted front guards cause I just don't have the gear to shrink and stretch new steel. In saying that, it was everying BUT the arch that was rooted on the spare guards. Half of these pics are just quick 'end of the day' photos for a timeline, don't freak out if you see holes and things still, I got them. I worked my way from that front guard all the way round back to it. I took photos of the lot but it's depressing so I won't post them all. fair bit of time spent with the magnet and air gun extracting the rust scale, then doused it in rust kill, zinc and another sealant. Everywhere. Inside both rear doors were Chooched, nice repairs from the outside but had blown out on the inside.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Both rear sills in and out. Both front caps, drivers not as bad. C pillar vent, one side only thankfully! And after about 80 hours day after day, 54 patches were chopped, made, welded and ground. marathon, but had to do it now rather than try patch it up as I'm driving it. I've got in with a tight group of 1200 owners, and they have been feeding me cheap and free spares! Fuckin awesome! Always liked the factory sedan grille more so,was amped when this showed up, bit of a scrub, paint and polish and I'm happy enough to rock it until I get a better one. Need the appropriate surrounds however. Also bits like badges, interior stuffs, brackets that have been cut or modified. Yesterday was hot, was waiting for the few layers of bed-liner to set in the roof after heat-shrinking and hammering so I can sand it easier, and I couldn't be assed sanding bog so I cleaned up and refurbished the bumpers, tail light surrounds, number plates, headlight surrounds etc. Already did the indicators and lenses before Xmas, test fit a stereo, general tidying and painting of stuff, cut a piece of underlay for the roof, seam sealed and under sealed the rear guards and spare tyre well, made a cover for the fuel tank in the boot. Broke a few of the tail-light fixed bolts, found if I snapped them off completely and drilled them out, I could fit some spare speaker mounting machine screws in there, weld them and trill off the excess. worked out really well, then wire wheeled and doused in black zinc. Common practice on this car
Mr.Mk1
Still bogging and sanding. Fellow member nick_m messaged me to say he still had some boxes of shit from his old race car, bring beer and depart with shit. So I did,and I'm glad I did. This was the best box, lots of things in much much better shape than mine, or certainly required. Especially the headlight surrounds since changing grille. Also some screens, a front valence that's not full of bog, 7 tail light assemblies. And found a box of good quality unopened 2k etch and primer kits which I need to pay for in the future, I'll use on Escort. DATSUN stainless plate surrounds cunt!
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
We got a new pup last night so I had to look after it while wife was at work. Couldn't do much but I did sort the stuff and polish stuff. muuuuuuuuuuch better! My other tail light surrounds were poxing out and cracked in places, plus rust stains inside the lenses. Also did number plate lamp, indicators, and headlight/guard eyebrows. Then scored a set of tyres for the sigma steels I have for $10 each to mobilise it and get warrant. Then scored these 14in GoodYears, haven't inspected but I do like the look, love a polished lip and gold will complement the future red paint like a mother. They are just skinny we fellas but its a small car and I'm on a budget. This car car has always had my attention so that may explain it.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Lame weather and lame Motorsport on tv means a full day of work. Huge thanks to Chris born_loser for the use of his DA sander, shit started progressing far faster! loaded up the roof, finished the guard, rear and doors, started into the front guard too. Then been on some primer. Shit load better looking I feel. need to grab another tin of bog tomorrow x-)
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Yes! sits all shonky cause the other sides tyres are flat-12in on rear and 14 on front, but it's all I had
Mr.Mk1
Pictures of half sanded bog and piles of dust aren't interesting, these are slightly moreso. Got this decent valence with my goodies a week ago, it had a few small knocks but was vastly better than my other one, and sat much more pert on the car. It was paint stripped and left as-is years ago, so I hit it with the stripping wheel and etched it, between coats I undersealed the front guards with the last of the hippo-liner, more to add some strength to the mega fucking thin guards that move when sanded. Cheerio
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
After what seems like a week Ive finally got the roof to a satisfactory shape. Took a fair swag of bog, but sanded a lot off too. Needs a few more primes to save headaches when I come to fine sand it but wanted to seal it tonight. Also happy with the drivers guard and bonnet, the passengers side is a lot better so taking bugger all. they are so flimsy I had to lather the backs of guards with under seal so they would not move around while sanding. Even threw on a shit old indicator because the front got weak without it screwed on. Sigh. now I have to finish the passengers still, hook into the rear arch (which looks better/more proud than the drivers started out) and the rear corner, tail light area. Happened upon a mystery tin of brand new 2k red paint and hardner, reducer. waited a week to see what shade it is and I reckon it's a goer, price was decent. The aforementioned front valence looks great in place with primer on, will just rock it as it. So it's just the fuel flap and valence that are bog free on this unit, boot lid came close but took a few hits. also have a lead on the chrome boot garnish which I thought would be impossible to find
Mr.Mk1
Today I finished the main bogging and sealed her up. Photos on this side are a bit ham cause it's a lot darker.
Mr.Mk1
The roof is also pretty fair, have given it a couple of filler primes and blocked back, and spot bogged pinholes. From what it was its night and day but don't try stick a magnet to the middle. I'll have to revisit some spots now I can see it in one colour, especially the stupid swage down the middle, pull all the doors off and sand inside, fix the series of elbow looking dents in the inner of drivers door.
Mr.Mk1
Today didn't really fire like I'd hoped, spent ages with the Knick putty and sanding wee spots, re-did the bottom of drivers front guard and primed it all, carbonded the gutters and the boot and bonnet webs-to-skins (great product), bogged and sanded the upper inner of doors, finished the nose of the bonnet and some repairs on the scuttle vents. Moving forward is still acceptable no matter how fast
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Picture less again sorry. Reason being other Datsun work. Got the wife's A14 back from the engine shop on Friday so out with the old, assemble the new, strip/clean/paint engine bay and poke it back in. (First pic is a year ago when the engine was in but rings chewed bore, but shows state engine bay) Its her daily so imperitive it happened quickly! Now she can chip away and paint other bits as time allows. today I picked up the paint for the 1200 and a boot trim/chrome. Haven't worked on it since Thursday, just tidying up the divers swage line then I'll prime, sand, prime, wet rub and blast. I think perhaps a fortnight? I also cooked my compressor so that's a set back but some $$$ from Ponty sale coming in soon.
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Well I fixed the compressor, starter capacitor blew, easy fix. Have since finished the body and the pinholes, primed last nite. Got up today and wet rubbed it in 400, cleaned and un-masked. pulled the doors off and cleaned them up and masked ready for red. Then ran out of masking tape so called it a day. Good haul. i have Tuesday off work to spray it
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
I had some time so I flicked the insides of doors, bootlid, fuel flap and cowl vents. Now by the time I'm ready tomorrow they will be hard enough to flip over and paint the seen side so no un-nessisary moving when wet. Super average pictures but it's just to show progress! Pretty excited to seal this cunt up and start using it! stand by lurkers
Mr.Mk1
Shit just about forgot to seam seal the gutters, that would have been awkward
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
Good day today, lots achieved and a cracker day for it. As you always do, I hoped it would spray out immaculate and I'd never have to touch it but it ended up a little peely and some shit stuck in it. So I'll have to cut and buff it, I really hate doing it but. both my repairs on the mounting areas for the cowl vents cracked when I screwed in, bit gay but not super phased. Very jazzed on the original front, looks so much better than the plastic grille. while I was waiting for it to flash off I replaced the diff pinion in the pontiac so double project win. tomorrow I'll crack into painting the pillars and doors satin black in and out then wham on the new rubbers I got from basis and hang the doors back on.
Mr.Mk1
Well. I though it was odd I hadn't seen my door rubbers and wee bump stops I ordered Last Friday so rang them, turns out they have none in stock but didn't tell me this. Are sending a sample to try and if it fits then I'll get that stuff instead. Really hoped to have it to glue on while doors were off. Tonight after work I masked, sanded and sprayed the pillars and door frames satin black. Came up decent, used the leftover paint form the pontiac..slight issue when I popped the tin open and half had gone to jelly. Thinned it a bit and strained out the chunks, got away with that one lol. Also put towbar on but made a rubber gasket between it and body so no chaff and the bumper goes over the top to hide most of it. I'll have to shorten the bumper brackets the amount of the thickness of the towbar brace as it sits bumper back moreso and the bumper side mounts don't reach
Popular Post Mr.Mk1
sorry it's a shitter but the lights blew on that side of the garage and it was late. Is wet also. Gonna drive to work tomorrow. Lights came right, did hoon a fuse so easy fix. practically everything it had, has been re-attached, but plenty of tidying inside to do. liking the direction it's going in. The rubber sample will work, just has less contact area for glue but seems to sit in the grooves better. Likely have 13m of that tomorrow to slug in this weekend. Is not the same profile as the boot so have chucked the old skode one back in for now.
