V8Pete
In the late eighties/early nineties, Personalised Plates issued blue numberplates in special combinations called 'Investment Plates' and, for the most part, duped people into buying them with promises of amazing returns. An Investment Plate seemed like the perfect period addition to a garish '80s sportscar. Coincidentally, 334488 was for sale which seemed appropriate for a 348. Purchasing it was a bit of an ordeal because the elderly owner didn't have email, cellphone, internet banking etc and lived 3 hours away. They paid $5025 for it in 1995! It's never been on a car. They'd been advertising it for resale so long that the advert still refers to her husband who has passed away. Apparently, the investment plate market's failure can be partially attributed to the introduction of MMP. You can read more about it on: http://www.investmentplates.co.nz/ The British version: https://www.regtransfers.co.uk/buy/numberplates-investment Some other weirdo trying to get a piece of the pie: http://www.1-plates.co.nz/oneplates/

You can read more about it on: http://www.investmentplates.co.nz/ Haha, their "about" page cracks me up: About Us We are Investment Plate owners ourselvesIn August 1995 we purchased TTTTTT. This must have been one of the last plates sold before the collapse of the market. Because we own plates, we have a vested interest in their value. We created this web site to promote interest in Investment Plates as a viable investment option now the market has stabilised. Sucks when the market runs out of "greater fools" and you're the last one haha. Wonder how much they forked out for that.

kicker
Haha this cracks me up. My old man bought a 2 letter plate when they first came out, before the 'investment plate' thing had been setup and was black on white, I think he paid about $350. He used to get letters telling him how much the plate was worth and how people were interested in buying it, I remember them saying it was worth about $45k He always laughed and chucked them away, he still has the plate too, though it's the blue on white now.

The S40 was gone and replaced by a V50 wagon but he still had the 240. This was right when I had my 244 too - but as I was attempting to market the S60 for sale on his behalf it was best to turn up in a late model Commodore than a ratty old Volvo. This pic was taken on his front yard opposite the garage. And here you can see the rest of the house

0R10N
Hah, where did you even find that gem of a plate for sale Peet, if the old lady didn't even have email/facebook/viber/snapchat? Haha this cracks me up. My old man bought a 2 letter plate when they first came out, before the 'investment plate' thing had been setup and was black on white I'd always wondered if all personalized plates with three characters count as "investment", or only certain combinations of letter/number. Also I've seen people trundling around with blue plates that say things like "B4IFLY", how the fuck did they manage to get those converted to investment spec?
