Popular Post chris r Posted August 25 Author Popular Post Posted August 25 The brakes have always been a bit touchy and grabby when cold as long as I've had the tonner. I've rekitted the front calipers, replaced all the hoses and had master re sealed. I had another look at the drums as it wasn't raining or dark Glad I ordered new shoes The adjuster has done its dash. A couple of teeth have gone off to retirement and a lot more are mushed together Splashed out and ordered new adjusters along with a spring kit, seeing as it will all be apart may as well replace nearly everything. Back into speedo schenanagins. I bought a little programmable thingy for the speedo controller which is still plan A (ish) It'll need a digital signal in and I'll have to sort out a hall sensor to make it a cleaner install. So plan b side quest is some period correct (for when tonner was new) electronic barrying. I'll use the existing sprinter inductive pickup in the gearbag and use a LM2917 frequency to voltage converter. There are a few circuit options and in should be able to get a square wave out. If I get really keen might be able to get a pwm signal out of it and feed it to the motor control board. Almost guaranteed it won't be anywhere close to the correct rpm for the speedo to read close to accurately but it's a fun side quest. 16 Quote
Popular Post chris r Posted August 31 Author Popular Post Posted August 31 Spring kit and adjusters were waiting for me when I got home Disassembled everything and insalled new genuine gm backing plate and hub in a can New wheel cylinders ready to go New adjusters with letters for each side which is nice Not pictured was the battle with the new green spring, only to realise I fitted the old trailing shoe on the front. Spend ages fighting the new green retaining springs into position with correct new shoe Fought the other one and ended up reusing the original springs as the new ones are clocked 90 deg different (and one went ping and went into orbit) All reassembled Will attack the other side later when I won't get rained on 17 Quote
Popular Post chris r Posted September 1 Author Popular Post Posted September 1 Other side went way quicker when I reused some original springs New springs are clocked 90 deg different so don't fit in the same place as the originals did Same thing but quicker this time as the cylinder only gushed after I fondled it's nipple and gave it a wiggle. Same quick backing plate in a can as yesterday. Yes it'd be better to wire brush and paint it correctly. I am doing this on the lawn and it's survived 47 years like this so it'll survive a few more. It's also progress vs more fucking around on side quests The pins? From the wheel cylinder to the shoes needed a quick (emphasis on the quick) clean up And into the atmospherically controlled paint booth One side on Everything together again New adjuster. The old one was as mangled as the left hand side and also siezed Really pushed the boat out and got some new wheel nuts as the original nuts have had one too many ugga dugga and weren't the best condition Have to put the hub caps on as people might think I'm made of money seeing the gold zinc wheel nuts. That's enough productivity for today. Will adjust them out and bleed them another day 14 Quote
Popular Post chris r Posted September 4 Author Popular Post Posted September 4 I was getting mad at the new adjusters not turning and blaming them for my incompetence. Turns out the picture I had with coloured springs was wrong. I had the springs on the wrong side and they were locking the adjusters in place Swapped them and strangely enough they work. Quick adjustment and test drive and the catchy/grabby bullshit seems to be gone which is good. Will see how it goes. I've lost the plastic trim clips so chucked rivnuts in place of them Couple of M5 screws and washers and the trim piece is back on Dropped it off for a wof. Fingers crossed it passes 18 Quote
chris r Posted Sunday at 06:00 Author Posted Sunday at 06:00 Brakes passed wof which is good. Both outer tierod ends and a inner control arm bush need replacing. I'll order them once they arrive I'll cheat and get mechanic to fit as I'm not keen on rolling in the mud to change them 8 Quote
chris r Posted Tuesday at 01:32 Author Posted Tuesday at 01:32 Turns out everything I ordered listed for Hz doesn't fit. Tierod ends don't fit and bushes too small diameter and too short. One ton stuff must be more heavy duty. Mechanic is trying to source stuff through their suppliers and I've talked to the place I got my parts from and am waiting for a call back 5 Quote
