Get out wuththe mazda into ford talk.....

I used to run 1300 and it was fun ina way thatyoucould really workit but notb going fast enough to over do it.

Now 1600 is faster. But dont expect to pushed into your seat or get a sore neck from the acceleration.

(Chicks will get a sore neck trying to se whos driving the sweet escort tho).

Im running standard bore. Lumpyish cam. Sorry dont know specs. Have a gt head with stndard size valves, a fancypants intake manifold and twinchoke webber and extractors.

I had twinsideys but unless they are mint and set up perfect they are pigs.

32/36 webber is so nice to drive after battling with the dellortos.

Electronic ignition definately.

I wouldnt do a 5 speed conversion again.first gear is uselesswith standard diff and you have to chop the car up to fitit Just change diff ratio.

Remember the basics.

You are trying to get as much fuel and air into the smallest space possible, set fire to it and get it out again in the fastest time possible time.

 

Carbs/efi - not too big or you lose speed, not too small or you restrict

Compression - needed for cam to work

Ignition - needed to burn the mixture fast and efficient

Exhaust - not too big or you lose torque, not too small or you restrict

Headwork & cam helps volume in/out and speed

 

The final is a balancing act - or turbo it

At this stage I am looking at a pretty basic setup.

 

Extractors

Electronic Ignition

Reground cam, suggested for town use between 2500rpm and 6000rpm.

Standard piston setup

New springs

32/36

 

 

Later on with a rebuild I'll go for high compression pistons, wilder cam and some good head work.

Yep id say that would be a good base for 1600. Any further than that and i would 'charge it one way or the other.

Or bite the bullet and zetec the shit out of it.

The cost of machining ans decent parts and tuning and still need a cert. Will most likely be on par with buying a donor fwd escort and transplanting the zetec.

early ford motors are terrible - they even look like they are out of an old tractor. the gearbox is terrible. everything about them is terrible. and ive only ever looked from a distance. up close they can only be worse right?

and to make matters worse they have those big long pokey things that jab the valves up and down

 

even a 12a drillport would be a better choice.
