zach_munce Posted October 18, 2025 Posted October 18, 2025 I got to drive this around today goes alright has a slight misfire when you give it the beans, will give it full 9 yards clay bar cut and polish etc 1 Quote
Muncie Posted October 19, 2025 Author Posted October 19, 2025 Well did all the WOF stuff crossover pipe that has rattled since day one got 3 more bends in it and heatwrapped till i ran out of the stuff my wof dude made that a mandatory. And the cut springs are gone Zach did all the hard work, struts had been assembled wrong in past so that was a mind fuck. Im now about 70mm lower than stock but about 30 mm lower again from last drag day. For me thats plenty........ im old. And to wrap things up it got towed to the back lawn because the crank angle sensor has left the chat...... fuckmylife.bin 3 Quote
Muncie Posted October 24, 2025 Author Posted October 24, 2025 Great news it was the crank angle sensor........ Bad news its knocking just like the old engine, its only just got to temperature let alone seen any spirited driving. Fuck. 2 3 Quote
Muncie Posted October 24, 2025 Author Posted October 24, 2025 Im hoping like hell something is loose like a torque converter bolt or something or i will be setting this fucking car on fire... Trying not to panic but drag day may be in a holden trax or not at all. 1 Quote

Not something stupid like a failing prop-shaft bearing? Quote
Muncie Posted October 24, 2025 Author Posted October 24, 2025 Ill get a video tomorrow its in the naughty corner engine has only been to 3200rpm with basically no load logs run all looking happy piss weak timing and only on spring pressure in wastegate, went to take around block to get up to temp drives beatifully noticed slight rattle that now sounds like piston slap or early rod knock evrything in bottom end was checked second hand but a happy low k supercharged engine. Other engine ran bad this is still happy running on 6 etc but scary sounds. Last enging carked it when a crank angle sensor failed again this engine just shat a sensor to im hoping it didnt see rediculous advance or anything when sensor died. It hasnt been revved hard or anything yet i intended to have a run in period. 1 Quote
shrike Posted October 24, 2025 Posted October 24, 2025 Are they a non interference motor? low revs and low load even with the sensor dying it would be fuel cut due to no injector signa. Timing wise even if it wasn't reading right wouldn't the knock snsors pick it up an pull timing? I mean standard checks I guess Comp test, borescope etc Does it do it n/a? is it at idle? does it go away when its warm/oil pressure goes up? 1 Quote
Muncie Posted October 24, 2025 Author Posted October 24, 2025 Ive just got a borescope recently so ill pull plugs stick that in see whats going on see if ive got any extra dwell that might point at a rod bearing or broken piston. Seems to not do it idle rattles about 2000 rpm and a bit less up to about 2500rpm thats all im giving it for now. Had about 30psi of oil pressure at idle warm. It was running happily as got cruised just off idle for about 5 minutes in a 50k area walked it up to about 3psi of boost and then cruised again rattle slowly crept in about 2 minutes after that. Im hoping its valvetrain...... though i think its not sounds lower. Im about ready for a go fund me at this stage ive thrown a bit of coin at it and shitload of time pretty devistating😒 Btw no AI used in tune it all used a safe stock base file and pulled timing back to about 10 degrees btdc under boost in good old Tunerpro. 1 Quote
mjrstar Posted October 24, 2025 Posted October 24, 2025 I remember a mate of mine rebuilt a 350 in a transam years ago for what sounded like bearing knock. Still made the noise afterwards, it turned out to be the power steering pump. 1 Quote

Muncie Posted October 24, 2025 Author Posted October 24, 2025 Just checked out facebook marketplace for engines on their own and also cars as a back up plan. Nope they are expensive now im not spending 1500 on an unknown 22 year old engine. Anyone know the rough cost of a visit to the machine shop for a bottom end freshen up on a pushrod v6? (if its coming out again its going back in fresh) if you know of a shop in auckland or waikato let me know as ive never farmed anything out. Ive bought a fix and flip car last week that would fund it all so im in a better headspace today. 1 Quote
shrike Posted October 24, 2025 Posted October 24, 2025 @Muncie does it make the noise in neutral when you freerev it with no load? 1 Quote
Muncie Posted October 25, 2025 Author Posted October 25, 2025 Ok weird shit nothing stands out except for this clean patch on piston same one that that dropped broke a piston. Doesnt knock cold then comes and goes. Theres a very small amount of fine flake in oil so little im almost not to concerned by it as this engine has had garage style rebuild that could of introduced it. We pulled apart the old engine today to see if anything else in it screams possible faulty old parts and found that a chunk of cam chain tensioner was broken off and rattling around, could definately be a thing here. Video, note these engines are rattly sounding on video and my injectors are pretty rowdy, i have a hunch im going to try pulling injector plugs and see if ive got a bung injector or something isnt working in the tune proper causing it to knock (long shot) but possible. cletus Posted October 25, 2025 Posted October 25, 2025 Have a look at the flex plate ,the old 3.8 was bad for cracking and it made similar noises to rod knock Particularly if you used the same one when you swapped motors 3 Quote
Muncie Posted October 25, 2025 Author Posted October 25, 2025 I re used the flex plate gave thorough check out though ive broken one on a triumph before can confirm horrible sounds they make, has ARP bolts red loctite and 23nm plus 90 degrees on hardened washers so wont be loose..... Unless the above ultra no fucking around set of hardware has sqeezed the face out like toothpaste. Under load it seems to quet down. Quote
Roman Posted October 25, 2025 Posted October 25, 2025 Fingers crossed its all good mate! Looking forward to seeing this run at drag day Quote

If i can figure out what this bloody noise is im looking forward to it. If its an engine...... well its getting rebuilt as everything around is ready to rock and roll now, timing for any issues couldnt be worse of course. Quote

Sick bearings complain when they're under load. Going quiet under load tends to suggest something else. A neighbour had a VN commy once. His made some nasty noises. Turned out to be the balance shaft bearing. Quote
