Muncie Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 I have my doubts too. Curiosity maybe I'm interested to see what it comes up with. If im able to copy paste something useful that i can verify that's all I'm hoping to get from it to be honest. What it has done is find me a whole pile of useful stuff google couldn't from other sources As i mentioned a while back people are guarded about tuning like it's not a learnable skill and if you know it you must fight with people that want to learn, then try convince them the only way is at your tuning shop. I'll be getting this thing on a Dyno eventually be fine if its not me tuning it I'll be happy if I know what's going on while it happens. 3 Quote
Muncie Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 In other news my overnight parts from Japan...... oops Victoria have arrived I can start fudging this thing together. 6 Quote
Muncie Posted July 20 Author Posted July 20 And yes I do buy this shit mainly for the stickers. 3 3 Quote
Muncie Posted July 21 Author Posted July 21 Chat GPT told me about all of the shit i knew was not right in the tune (but ignoring till i had logs to correct from) its still working on its tune about 18 hours in now. 1 1 Quote
Muncie Posted July 21 Author Posted July 21 Bugger me it indeed spat out a tune 🤣 trust levels are very low though. I'll flash it in and use it to send rods out side of current block maybe?? 2 Quote

Muncie Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 Noise sound like its at top of engine and appears to be running on 7 i wonder if i've dropped a rocker or valvespring.... engines still fucked but maybe i can test some shit if i find an issue like that. its had a top end rattle that went away over 2000rpm for about 6 months. Its actually far quieter today. 3 Quote
Muncie Posted July 26 Author Posted July 26 Time to start on the heads, these were a score no cracks in usual places seats are mint i could throw straight on if I wasn't replacing stem seals. Cleaned up surfaces and popped a valve out to see ports the casting is really rough on these and has a lot of protrusions around valve stem so spent a bearable around of time knocking dags off and reducing shit around the stem. I dont really know what im doing with porting so will only go this far as these heads look easy to break through on not a lot of metal in between Port and water galleries. That should burn up all my spare time during the week. 5 Quote
Muncie Posted July 27 Author Posted July 27 Ended up doing a bit more on intakes then got carried away did exhaust ports as well they were marginally less shit. One head down painted and ready for reassembly starting on other one will give a light lap on valves as a few had some dark areas on valves themselves so will get that all gone. The stem seals were basically hard as Bakelite so this hasn't been a pointless exercise. 5 Quote
Muncie Posted July 27 Author Posted July 27 Ready for reassembly will wait for the other one to be at this stage before reassembly so i can get on a bit of a roll, all cleaned out though with oven cleaner no sludge varnish or oil carbon left. 4 Quote
Muncie Posted August 1 Author Posted August 1 So i've gone through the AI Tune and found its basically set everything up in timing and fuel that would give a rather conservative tune it is a safe starting point. However Tunerpro sucks balls and AI cant work around it it can edit the binary just fine though.. so a week of teaching it and its building me a tuning tool that edits the binary like tunerpro with scaling like you would find in aftermarket software. lets see what it spits out. Oh yeah the tune took ages! yes it can but its not really viable if you dont have days to wait for it to read a log make changes then spit out a .Bin file. It does cool logos while you get bored though 2 2 Quote
Muncie Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 Been down the AI rabbit hole it can do lots of cool shit but none of that cool shit can be exported out of the AI to be used..... Anyway fuck all of that for now back to task at hand build these heads! I stuck them both on bench and went to town on them realised there was a disgusting hump and sharp edged casting mark in exhaust so that got deleted and everything smoothed out, probably bit over a kilo of shavings on bench and garage floor so if it doesn't flow go better I'll be very surprised. Who am I kidding its definitely going to help its no race engine quality job and my first one ever its worth a try. Currently heads are done, ported valves lapped lightly new stem seals and reassembled and painted ready for the block. Ready to start on block next needs a degrease and a squirt of silver and I'll start putting it together. 3 Quote
Muncie Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 Found one bent valve in heads probably explains why these came off another engine were in great condition. Had a spare so lapped that in no dramas no damage or anything, old one just wasnt settling in on one side took 30 seconds to lap new one in old had very slight wobble. 2 Quote
Muncie Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 Hmmm ported heads normally go best with a cam dont they? Maybe I pay a visit to Franklin Cams tomorrow. I'm not doing valvesprings on this they require additional fucking around so the timing chain can cope and not snap which means a different oil pump to fit a double row chain. Too much effort and $, if it sounded a bit cooler and gave more top end with stock valvetrain I think I can sell me self on one. 2 Quote
zach_munce Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Only $239 for a “lumpy turbo cam” i reckon go for it 2 1 Quote
Roman Posted August 4 Posted August 4 That's insanely cheap. Maybe the question is, can you afford not to buy it? 1 1 Quote

Your absolutely right push rod life has a small amount of perks only sending one cam in to be ground is one of those. Biggest issue is getting harmonic balancer off done up to 240nm and no way of stopping engine spinning and its on a stand. Quote
cletus Posted August 5 Posted August 5 When I did my turbo 318, I got a head guy to go over the heads to make sure they were all ok He ended up spec'ing a better set of valvesprings, as boost pressure on the back of the valve plus more aggressive cam meant the new springs that came in the heads were not up to the task Just something to think about if you're rebuilding an engine and it's already done heaps of km, the springs are probably already a bit tired 4 Quote
