The drag racing alternator is designed for super low rpms. As most of the time spent at the drags is slowly crawling back in the queue. Obviously can handle massives rpms if need be but isnt as efficient.

Mental note for next time: Buy bushes that fit a std thick wall tube size!

So I bought the bushes because they were close to the dimensions I wanted for engine mounts. But then I could not find any thick wall tube even close to the right size.

I can make some. I have a tiny lathe. How hard could it be... #FirstRealThingMadeInLathe

The bush diameter is 47mm.

The closest size bar stock I could find was 65mm.

It took a while to cut through with the power hacksaw. The saw would also walk and the bar fall off the shims fucking up the angle of the cut. I sorted that out!

I did the first cut with a blade with quite small teeth and it took fucking AGES! I broke that blade later, so when I cut the next one I used a blade with bigger teeth(it was all I had), it cut quite a bit faster. But it still took a really long time.

Then I whittled it down in the lathe. The deepest cut I found I could do was 20thou/0.5mm any deeper and it would jamb and break the carbide insert.

ELEVENTY BILLION HOURS later!

Actually the first one took 6-7 hours including cutting it off the big bar.

The 2nd one I spread over several days.

So glad I didn't fuck up the sizes and have to start again. Bushes fit perfectly.

I wanted to get my nephew a toy garage for his birthday as he was starting to play with toy cars. I used to have one as a kid and thought it was the bees knees. Had a look around but everything was plastic. So I decided to make one myself.

Strengthened everything so if the little guy wants to jump on it then he can.

Final product. I painted on some toilets and an exit sign on the side. It also has another garage door on the back, like the front, for easy exit.

I did keep the cardboard template for awhile for that very reason. Was lush for hooning the smaller city turbo on.

I made an object with no real purpose:

It uses old plumbing from my house renovation, a leftover sink plug, a bit of decking timber, leftover varnish that Barry really should have thrown out etc.

I somehow managed to fit the mechanism from a dimmer inside that bowl part and connect it to the red valve knob, but the connection is flimsy due to my first attempt failing. The first kid to use it will break it.

I'm giving this creation to my brother as a gift, to take up space in his house and make his wife complain. I have learnt a bit from making it, which will allow me to do a better job when I make myself something similar. =)

Yes, It's cable tied together. It will get covered over with fiber glass tape soon.

That's basically the story of this other useless object / piece of 'outsider art' I made. My Dad made the first one for me when I was learning to walk, and there's a photo of it somewhere - a wooden box with junk from the garage attached. There was a tap, a turntable, some lightswitches etc, and a lightning bolt was painted on. Here's the first version of my second generation attempt:

Since it's the garage equivalent of Fridge Pie, it's mostly made with whatever junk was hanging around. There was some new stuff purchased, but if the bill doesn't add up to much, the labour hours probably do. I made it for my nephew, so some of the features are aimed at his quirks:

• I incorporated an off-the-shelf 'useless box' because he loves switches - turn the switch on and a hand comes out of the trapdoor and turns it off again
• A stack of old server fans blow air and pingpong balls out of the plumbing pipe, since he is fascinated with, and terrified by, vacuum cleaners (dun dun dun)
• The record turntable works (was belt-driven, now gear-driven and reversible)
• The orange/yellow coffee tamper with 'PULL' written on is connected to a door soft closer
• Most electrics are off a 12V battery, with an LED volt meter and internal charger
• LED colour-changing light with bluetooth speaker built in
• Hotwheels car launcher, storage cupboard, make-believe lever and knob, clock spring chime etc

That first version, built for Xmas 2017, got pretty thoroughly busted as you'd expect. I had to fix it for Xmas 2018:

Now it's got electroluminescent wire, some waterfall christmas lights, freebie switches from work, and some glow-in-the-dark stars (thanks Oldschool secret santa!)..

I went around to my sister's place today to do another minor repair on this, and my nephew is getting close to being able to undo screws. I see trouble ahead.

Since his parents drive a Prius, I engineered a situation where I could test him for the petrolhead gene - getting him to watch my Jag's electric aerial go up and down while I started the motor and gave it a few gentle thottle blips. He stared at the rasping tailpipes in amazement and eventually decided it was scary. I'm such a bad uncle.
