chris r
I was rummaging around dads shed and found some old nixie tubes he had found when he was my age. I thought i'd like to make a clock so found a kit, got side tracked and ordered more nixi stuff. The kit arrived just before Christmas so I have been working on it when I'm motivated enough. When I was trying to find info on the hitachi nixies of dads (still can't) I found this site http://www.gstube.com/ and they had a interesting looking display so I ordered it, It arrived today finally. circuit board and stuff Dads tiny hitachi nixies The russian display and dekatraon
chris r
I got a bit side tracked with the display and am pulling it apart so I can use it as the clock display. Can anyone read russian data sheets? I know the k155nd1 are the nixie display IC's It looks like the k155NE2 are some sort of decoder? De soldered all the driver ICs

thegreatestben
These are cool, have you tried using the google translate on a smartphone? You can take a pic of the text, tell it you want russian to english and it should crank out a reasonable translation
danger
Oh man when I was a chocolate monger we had a 1974 set of scales that ran those things for the numerals. Was so damn sweet.
chris r
I dont own a smart phone, Will steal the mrs one when she gets home. Finally finished soldering up the minutes and seconds ends of the cables onto the board. I used the ribbon cable in place of the driver Ic so it can be plugged into the clock board

chris r
I finished off the display cabling today and started on the dekatron base/wiring.
chris r
The display works well with the power supply on the clock board I've taken a vid of it when I'm earthing out each cathode individually. The zero is on constantly because there is a missing resistor. Looks slightly better in HD https://www.facebook.com/chris.read.1232/videos/711316032336925/?pnref=story
chris r
Fucking thing! Everyting is connected up and It'll count seconds but it wont set minutes or hours I have checked, re checked and re re checked ic locations and solder joints and everything looks ok. The voltage doubler for the dekatron counter is shit too. The switching transistors don't and just draw heaps of current
kempy
are you getting a display at all for the mins/ hours?
chris r
Yes It'll display everything but wont count up I am wondering if I ave got a bad cmos chip or I have a bad solder joint. Will be having a quick look over with with a friend tonight and will report back
kempy
If you haven't had any luck, buy a logic probe, fairly cheap. Sounds like either a bad chip/joint like you said, the probe will let you know if you are getting count states and triggers etc without the need for guessing
chris r
My friend has a logic probe asn we went over it. Found the 'minute' section is not being pulled low enough to trigger. Thats as far as we got, Will have another look later
chris r
I havent had another look at the counting section of this yet But I have found a case for it. I will need to make something up to mount the dekatron (and fix the circuit for powering it). It looks to be just about the perfect size for what I want. How long until someone decides its a bomb or similar? Thinking about it I might swap the clock display and the dekatron around so it looks like the bunch of wires actually do something
chris r
Had a fresh look at this today. we suspected a faulty cap so I replaced it and no change. I had another look and I put a diode in backwards. Now I just need to figure out the 10s of hours and the charge-pump for the dekatron.... Got a quick video and will do a quick burn in test and see if it stays happy
