So the old 4 speed is almost at its end so im going to get a type 9 my mechanic has had lying round for a while put in. but i was just wondering what do i need to get done to my 2pc drive shaft. as the gearbox is a bit longer i will need to get one of the shafts shortened? is that possible? or do i need to try source a 1 piece drive shaft? could i just fit one from a early cortina or capri?? any help will be appreciated

Escort auto shaft or custom.

/have heard that a Hillman Hunter shaft works, but never tried it myself.

Guessing your Escort is still Kent powered?

You've probably already sorted a clutch, but if not a Hillman Avenger clutch disk has the right spline for the T9 and it works with your factory flywheel and p pressure plate.

I have put a t9 in my Capri , had to get the drive shaft re made at the yoke splines are diff, probly the worst part was coughing up for the new yoke , made some " adaptors " for the rear g/box mounts that the wof man was happy with , ( didn't have to get it certified )  ( pix if you want ). Speedo is so close I didn't bother adjusting it . With a 3.44 diff it does a mick hair over 2500 rpm at 100km/h in 5th :)

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to dredge this back up but finally getting around to the swap so need to clarafie a few things. ive googled and googled but everyone seems to have different awnsers to the same questions..

To mate the type 9 to the xflow i...

use the xflow flywheel, but change the clutch plate to a 190mm 1inc 23 spline sierra clutch plate but use the pressure plate thats for the xflow. correct?

Can i use my standard clutch cable and speedo cable? i have read i need to change to a rs2000 cables but i have also read that i can just use the ones i already have as they should reach??

Last thing is the drive shaft.. Does anyone know the measurements for the length of the driveshaft. theres a old fat man in taruanga that hordes heaps of crap and reckons he will have the right driveshaft sitting there with the yolk, but it would be useful to have the length so i can meausre it and possibly save some coin instead of getting one made up..

Anyways thats about all i need to know so any feedback would be helpful.

Cheers

Or you can use a complete Sierra clutch with the Xflow Flywheel, but you will need to get the flywheel re-doweled to match the Sierra clutch. Cost me about $50 at a local machine shop to get mine done. You'll be finding different answers to the same questions as there are a number of equally good ways to do it :)

Stock clutch cable, Cortina speedo cable.

so just out of curiousity, which year hilman clutch did you use?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/chrysler/clutches/auction-1332333602.htm <<<<< this one?

or does it not matter as they are all the same? keen for this option as it sounds simple.

Does anyone happen to know how long the driveshaft needs to be? is it just 30mm shorter than a standard escort one or something like that? managed to get a yolk from an old transit so going to get a shaft made up using that, just need measurements :) cheers

That looks right to me, 190mm with 23t 1" spline centre.

You only need the Hillman disk, you still use the Ford pressure plate and throwout bearing.

If you can find one a stock auto Escort driveshaft and xmember is meant to work with the T9, from memory the xmember gets fitted backwards and possibly needs the holes slotted a touch.

ok cool, ill ask a couple of people with those escort wrecks on trademe if they have a driveshaft for an auto. might look on burton and see if i can just get the disk. need to get a thrust bearing for the box as well. Thanks for the responce :study:

I have an idea that backwards cross member thing is what my boss did with his 2.0 litre 5 speed Mk2 Escort. Used the factory holes all sweet I think.

ive heard the same thing. was told i can just take the old mount. turn it round and flatten it a bit and put new holes and it fits nicely. i guess ill cross that bridge when i get there :)

BNT should be able to do both the disk and bearing cheaply.

quick question. is it actually possible to remove the 4speed without removing engine from the car? Im having a bit of trouble getting this box out. I have removed all bolts cables and everything but the bellhousing keeps smashing into the tunnel and i cant get it to come back the extra 5-10mm that i need to get the input shaft free..

Sounds like my Starlet. Disconnect the steering column and remove the engine cross member bolts. With a jack under the engine cross member, lower it just enough to give you clearance to get the gearbox out, without having to remove the engine.

EDIT: Keep an eye on hoses and earth straps as you lower it, or you could damage them.

Alright. Might try that tomorrow. Got pissed off and gave up for the day. Was just going to take the engine out tomorrow but this might be a better idea. Thanks
