cletus
right i have done some looking at TIG machines. from what i can find, this seems to be a good deal? http://www.boc.co.nz/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=715840234&mpe_id=10770&productId=3074457345616765405&intv_id=715847060&evtype=CpgnClick&langId=111&catalogId=3074457345616677868&ddkey=http%3AClickInfo its the only ac/dc machine i can find in this price range, all the others are DC only. I probably wont be doing very much alloy welding at all but i think if im going to buy one for the same price it may as well have the capability. Also, is this enough ergs for what i will be doing? mostly mild steel, prob from panel steel, up to 5mm max thickness, will use for car stuff. NickJ
We have one of those in the uni workshop, had a bit of trouble with the original torch, hose crimped really easily killing the gas supply, ended up with a different torch and now runs sweet

I have spent hours and hours on one of these at work and can promise you won't be disappointed. Buy one I don't think there's a better welder in nz for the money

cletus
I got one, also went and got a bottle of argon. For reference - I got one from eziswap, $599 for a bottle you own, when it needs refill you give them your one and they give you a full one, and pay for a refill, which they said would be $150. Other option was buy a bottle for $560 from another place but getting it refilled is a bit of a ball ache, my argoshield bottle was from the cheaper place. Had a tutu on it this afternoon and it seems easy to use, I haven't driven a tig for 9 years so need a bit of practice getting settings sussed. The HF start makes things a lot easier than the other one I used
