cletus
Hello. Is there any reason why I can't use argon in a mig welder apart from cost? I'm thinking about getting a tig welder, I already own a bottle so would like to have just one for both. Also can you fill an argoshield bottle with argon? Tell me why I'm an idiot here. Bling
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/welding-gas.htm Great forum. Not 100% sure on filling, so won't say yes. Even though I believe this to be the case...
datlow
I asked the same idiot questions when I was deciding on what to buy (as cheaply as possible) Straight argon isn't recommended for mig http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/welding-gas.htm Can change from argon to argon mix but not back (as now it won't be straight argon for Tig welding tho again you can Tig with argosheild but gets messy) Could buy co2 cheap for mig welding? Llama
Iirc, you should be able to fill an argoshield bottle with argon. Welding will work OK, kinda just like pure Co2 will work. Welds just will be cooler in this case with less wetting
datlow
Beaten to it ah, also found a gas swap place after I bought a bottle and have to wait 2 weeks for it to be filled! (Wellington so has to be sent to Auckland for filling! http://eziswapgas.co.nz

I have an F size cylinder here, it was last tested in 1999 if you want to try your luck on getting it tested
smokin'joe
Straight argon isn't recommended for mig interesting, i was told i needed to use str8 Argon in my mig for using silicone bronze wire....... might have a go with argon sheild next time i am doing thin panel work. kpr
we tried to do the same. argon for both mig and tig. results were pretty average with the mig on straight argon. to the point we got a second bottle (argon shield) for the mig

You need straight argon for silicon bronze wire, it dosn't work very well with mix, i tried.

smokin'joe
What's silicone bronze wire for? was advised to use it for very low temp panel welding............not a pro welder, but seemed to create far less heat related distortion than either co2/argonsheild with MS wire
Testament
Anyone seen someone with a bottle of argon and a bottle of co2 and mixing them in situ for MIG welding?
Gaz
My backup bottle is argon and I use it in mig without issue. Lately using to weld panel steel. Argosheild or panelmix is better though. Gaz
Spencer
Man everyone trys to use the wrong gas to save on bottles/cash, just buy the right gas for the welding method and it works better.
