Goat
Wow. Now that's a barn find L20! You certainly have your work cut out for you! Awesome!
kyteler
Knowing these cars faaaiiirly well. I would suggest you have a lot .. a whole lot, of cutting and welding ahead of you. Probably even more than my 110 and that's saying something.
hellabroke
i have my work cut out! Every time i remove a panel i find more spots of rust. However they are not so bad and should be a simple patch up job. I will post up on the build thread when i start tackling the rust. Need to find a cheap mig welder. What would be a good price for a second hand one??? seen one for $150?
kyteler
My advice would be do not buy a "cheap" one. It will constantly kick you in the dick. Look out for a quality MIG and buy the best brand name welder you can afford. If you can't afford a brand name welder, you can't afford a welder. If you're going to be spending a lot of time welding (which, you are.. you have more than a few patches) then you want the welder to work perfectly leaving only your skill to blame for a potentially terrible final product.
Goat
^ that exactly. There's welders and then theres welders. Blame the tools yada yada, but a decent welder makes such a big difference.

Swampo
$800? Blimey, you know somebody who knows somebody? I think if that was listed on trade me it'd be gone fairly quickly. Good luck and it'll all be worth it in the end.
Benno
Reg on hold or re-registered? If it's de-registered and you ever want to get it re-vinned you would need to get a repair cert for all the rust repairs, which may be difficult.

Could i get him to get me a cert? Someone who has done this will probably give better advice then I would, but from here "It’s advisable to go to a registration agent before the vehicle is repaired. The agent will assess if the repair needs to be certified under the supervision of a specialist repair certifier. The repair certifier is responsible for ensuring that the repair is carried out correctly." so basically go and see a repair certifier before you start repairs, he will give you better advice. You will need to provide photographic evidence of all repairs and may need to demonstrate the quality of your welds. Some parts may require a specialist to do the work. Blue Rona
Good luck with your first Zed mate , I owned a 260z for many years before getting married and downsizing to the Corona. I spent a lot of cash fixing rust and previous dodgy bog jobs from others. I can only echo what others have said - get it done right once. these old girls are super rust prone and it could end up being very serious. Apart from that they are mean cars , I stuck with an L26 with a little bit of work and it sounded cool and still went ok. Dropping an injected engine into an old car is more work than others will lead you to think. "drops in there" isn't quite it. Remember bigger engine = bigger brakes and handling upgrades. I got a lot of my bits of Ebay and from Motorsport Auto in the U S and A , many Z cars went to the US and they were the car that really sparked the import tuning explosion there. I ran tokico shocks with lowered springs and a full bush kit , helped the handling like night and day.
hellabroke
I plan on spending a lot of time and money on this car over the next couple of years. Being a uni student time and money are not in my favour. Most of the work will occur over my summer break. That is also when I have a well paying full time job that will cover most of the costs of the build. For the time being I am stripping it down, and organising and researching future plans for it. I have access to a private car workshop with a big spray booth and all the equipment required. The owner of the workshop has been restoring old cars his entire life so I plan on picking his brains a lot during this project. Thanks for all the advice coming through. As a newbie to this it is really helpful.
