Well I have taken a punt and ordered a NOS upper arm from Australia, will be coming over on DHL so theoretically will be here Thursdayish.

No doubt it will arrive at lunchtime Friday, giving me a couple of hours to sort it out.

Righto - to work.

The new A arm is a drivers side one, and I needed a passenger side... So I pressed the trunion and bushes out, this looks way better I can tell you;

IMG_20150826_180642_1024x768_zpsztknk3bp

Then I carefully pressed it into the A arm;

IMG_20150826_183948_1024x768_zpss82tztnb

Then I had to sort this shit out, it is the bracket holding the retaining nuts for the top bolts, the threads were really tight when i pulled it apart and this got a bit muntered;

IMG_20150826_185627_1024x768_zpsdryyptpx

There is some small benefit to buying a company that is older than the steam age, there is a lot of semi useful shit lying around. In this case 7/16ths by 20tpi tap and dies. This allowed me to clean the threads up all purty, then I welded the plate back together;

Sweet. Then i totally forgot to take any more pics. Suffice to say a minor amount of fucking about later, things looked like this; Happily back on its own 4 wheels.

I thought I would drive it home, but the battery was a bit flat :(

So I left it charging up, wof will be achieved tomorrow :-) :smile:

So yea, probly time for an update.

A couple of details on the car have been tweaked, this has basically transformed the car into something genuinely lush;

- I got an alignment done.

 - The driveshaft got pulled out cos there was a bit of a drumming noise at speed, turned out it was bent and the mid point hangers were knackered. I replaced those with some of the same jobbies as the gearbox. it got straightened and balanced, it now pulls through the range buttery smooth. It is a flash as anything two piece job, I was a bit surprised.

 - Yoeddynz was rude about it on the last OS drive we did, highlighting the steering as something less than optimal. I knew this already and had planned to look hard at the power steering stuff as it all felt a little lumpy and stiff. I talked to Ellis st autos and he reckoned look at the steering box first, so I backed the worm and nut backlash adjuster off 1/8th of a turn and lo! lumpyness gone, 2x lighter and much more directional. Win.

It drives really nice now.

This is the only pic i got of all this dicking around, so a boring update mostly;

So this turned up at work today;

IMG_20151209_154708_1024x768_zpso2javc9p

I rang the dude who owns it a couple of days ago because of this;

There is a complete parts car plus basically another cars worth of parts, engine tranny etc. The dude selling it wanted a bit much money (for what I actually need right now) even though it is maybe worth what he is asking. He is prepared to deliver it from Takaka, so yea probably worth it.

However the brown car dude is happy to go halvsies in all that, and i have plenty of room to store it all, so we are basically land banking it.

The car was a runner and got driven from blenheim before being partially dismantled. It looks pretty solid but has no reg. I may just flick it on as a project, depends if I can find what i need in the parts bins.

That is all.

So the very day the dirty old bitch got an alignment and i had decided some sweet summer cruising was in order the power steering decided to become a bit dog, working then not working etc. I decided the first thing I would look at was the pump as it needed some loving anyway, it was only being held on by 1 bolt when it needed three;

IMG_20151221_141511_1024x768_zpskjfjlgpr

That pump was a right cunt to get off, I had to remove the radiator to get to the lock tab on the pulley nut to remove the pulley cos the stupid fucking brits thought that the mount bracket needed to be nuclear bomb proof rather than just slot the fucker so you could just lift the pump out. The pump is a beautifully made bit of kit, although about 3kg worth for unknown english reasons.

I am remembering why I fucking hate british vehicles and love boring Toyotas, that is 1/4" folded and welded steel plate;

IMG_20151221_205602_1024x768_zpsgycpbpig

I have purchased the parts car shown in a previous post and went to Takaka to collect a few bits, but I stupidly forgot to take all the tools I needed to remove the pump off the parts car. My poor little truck was shitting its ring out coming back over the hill I must say, it was second gear most of the way up... a ton of steel on an 1800 townace ute will do that.

Now, the innards of my pump were actually pretty immaculate once i stripped it, in fact they they looked like new, so I decided I could utilize my mediocre machining skillz to make a backing plate to attach more bolt holes, rather than waste an afternoon going back over the hill;

Some time consuming blunt holesaw action;

IMG_20151221_151237_1024x768_zpsxa5qysm6

Turning the shit to the size of the spigot on the back of the broken mount

IMG_20151221_155550_1024x768_zpsojsdbpmf

Matching the plate hole positions to the existing hole and half holes, I tapped the new holes to match the half holes, I figured the half holes would do something then.

IMG_20151221_164042_1024x768_zpswlusleaf

Et voila!

I wont be able to crank those bolts up hard cos it is only 6mm mild steel with the equivalent of an M10 going through it, but it will be heaps better than before.

IMG_20151222_084626_1024x768_zpsx63t3nrk

I put it all back together tonight, I gave the rad and the engine a bit of a flush before reassembly and used a slightly longer V belt on the pump drive as it was a bit short to get on and off easily.

It has not fixed anything power steering wise but at least I know that the pump is ok now.

So fucking stoked I got an alignment approx. 4 kms before need to pull the steering rack to fix it, top planning there dickhead.

On to the power steering ram.

I jacked the car up, grabbed the ram and surprisingly it rotated about 10 degrees... This was surprising as it basically needs to not rotate to function correctly, and sure enough the rotation translated into about 5 degrees of toe in/out. This could explain some of the wanderyness as the ram would push one way and have a certain toe, then push the other way and change the toe 5 deg. Shithouse.

I removed the offending item;

IMG_20151227_114213_1024x768_zpsocfmjumi

IMG_20151229_135142_1024x768_zpseipy8j9h

This is such a hilarious design, the ram is the tie rod between the wheels, it gets pushed directly by the steering box, and the end of the ram is connected to the chassis. The push from the steering box also moves a control piston in the ram so there is a fucking complicated joint in there to achieve this and get some adjustment.

I dismantled it with some difficulty as the reason it was all moving was a wee pin that stopped the rotation had slogged itself out and had wedged itself in there.

The fucked pin fits in this wee hole;

IMG_20151227_114228_1024x768_zpse87p4fdu

Various innards;

IMG_20151227_122905_1024x768_zps71nvmaph

IMG_20151227_122912_1024x768_zpsmraf8ucc

IMG_20151227_144740_1024x768_zpsyhmiwnzb

Shit was in basically pretty good nick, the o ring on the control piston was a bit poo and causing the ram to leak a bit so i replaced it as well as the two joint ball bearings.

About this time I realised the the pin was the root problem anyway, it was wedging itself against the control piston and preventing it from moving freely when under pressure.....

This is the offending pin;

IMG_20151227_144756_1024x768_zpsea6mojh2

i turned down a cap screw to act as a pin, nutted it on and tacked it in place to make sure it stayed there....

IMG_20151229_153942_1024x768_zpsraaznfni

Chucked it all back together checked it all worked and got yet another alignment :blackeye:

The steering is now super effective, them Brits sure as fuck knew how to overpower steering feel with hydraulics....

Thats it for now.

So the steering ram started getting flaky again, plus as discussed previously the thing was banging like a $5 whore, so i thought I would sort that shit out once and for all.

Basically the pin that stops the joint rotating inside the ram needed a serious upgrade.

I reckoned this could all happen without removing the ram from the car, so I jacked it up and went to work;

IMG_20160227_100054_1024x768_zpsf6juz2wh

All dissasembled.

That hole is where the pin goes, but it normally fits from the inside. I drilled it out to 8mm so i could fit the pin from the outside and replace it easily should it go to pot again.

To that end I made this;

IMG_20160227_101415_1024x768_zpscemuaia3

IMG_20160227_111911_1024x768_zpsaer4ioyu

That looks the shit to me.

I started to reassemble it all and at this point fucked up quite badly by somehow getting the two ball bearings stuck inside the joint in the wrong place. It was full of grease and the little fuckers did not want to come out. So I then had to remove the ram which I did rapidly and in a quiet rage.

It did make the fitting up a lot easier once I got the balls out;

IMG_20160227_124538_1024x768_zps0ukmjlea

If it gets loose again I can replace it with everything in place.

So that done I chucked it all back together. It feels good now, much more direct and the power steering is not quite as light as before which is an improvement.

Its all good.

The old girl easily keeps up in open road traffic, and hustles along surprisingly well in the twisties once you get used to the feel of it.

I passed my neighbour in his new Singer Vogue at serious speed the other day on the way back from the beach, it was fast enough for my wife to be yelling at me, so probably around 125km/h lol.

I finally moved the last of the parts into my shed, mostly engine blocks and heads, 3 engines worth...!

These I got off the truck by the sparta method, now they sit in the dirt amongst a pile of kindling that was a pallet lol.

The engine design is interesting, a lot of metal and sod all cylinder;

So the previous owner Jones came down to visit with his family and spent the time running around in the Snipe, his eldest son cried when they had to leave it behind....

Jones painted the bonnet for me and made some executive decisions around the styling, ie removing the granny trims from the wheels to make it a bit more ratty. I like it, it is a bit less nana spec;

So driving around on Friday the old bitch started running on 4 or 5 cylinders not the recommended 6.

Heaps of spark there, but I tweaked it all up anyway, no change at all. I chucked Shanes compression tester at it today - the readings were 0, 0, 110, 120, 130, 140 Psi.

1 and 2 chuffed in the same way when testing, so i reckon it has blown the head gasket through between the two....

I will pull the head off soon and see.

Stink.

I have been chipping away at this in the evenings, it is kind of therapeutic as it is not a car i need to be going, so I am not rushing anything.

Here it is installed in the shed and getting ancillaries stripped off;

IMG_20160414_180002_1024x768_zpslxzywdot

I had to borrow Shanes engine crane to lift it out, the head has lifting eyes, and this is extremely necessary due to the head weighing as much as a normal engine. Things came off pretty easy, although the two manifold bolts had to be cut off and this took about 2 fucking hours to cut through.

I also forgot to drain water out of the block so it all went down the bores and the pushrod holes. I will change the oil and filter anyway I reckon. I would have struggled anyway cos the tap on the block did not connect to anything, and the bung on the other side of the block was fucking immovable.

I cleaned out the tappet followers and there was an unusual amount of clag and metal chips down in them, I am not sure where this has come from as a quick looks shows the pushrods etc to be basically sound. I cleaned it all out and the tappets might be a bit easier to adjust now.

IMG_20160417_183514_576x768_zpsndot7kyo.

And what do we have here?

IMG_20160417_183520_1024x768_zps89stghye

We have a spot on diagnosis is what we have.

Things look pretty good in there other than the obvious. The water galleries are a bit clagged up but everything else looks pretty normal. There is a wee lip in the bores but nothing to worry about.

I just gave all of this a good clean up tonight, no pics tho.

IMG_20160417_183532_1024x768_zpsfrxxwl9b

The offending part.

IMG_20160417_183633_1024x768_zps3uusinv4

Shane also has a spring compressor, so i will clean up the valves and probably lap them in. I also have a set of valve stem seals, those will no doubt get chucked in there too, although it doesn't appear to leak past.

Might even make it to Kaiteri next weekend.....
