kempy
Saw him when he came over a couple of years ago, fucking awesome describes it well. Good interview with him here http://www.ted.com/talks/yves_rossy_fly_with_the_jetman Have a short run on the jet engine here mounted on the test bed, getting up to 105,000 rpm which is about 60% thrust. https://youtu.be/Q-5ps-kWI50
BlownCorona
thats a whole shitload louder than i would have expected lol. that that metal pole staked into the ground? otherwise you have no hope of moving the bike if it cant move that plank of wood at that sorta thrust level
kempy
Haha yea its a noisey little bugger!, there's 2 metal stakes and a 15kg weight holding it which is a bit of an overkill but safety first
felixx
Mrs Felixx said "Will he paint it first?" "Your friends are stupid" I think that translates to "So much fucking win" "You need more projects" Thanks Kempy!
flyingbrick
A workmate was showing me some light aviation magazine with a few microlight (or ultralight..if there's a difference i don't know what it is) airplanes powered by jet turbines. The turbine units only looked to be the size of a small bucket. Of course the first thing that came to mind was WOULD MAKE KEMPYS BIKE SO MUCH MORE DANGEROUS
BlownCorona
pretty sure its a power to weight/general weight classification, give me a week and ill know alllllllllll about that stuff. but no more gas turbines i really want to put a helicopter engine in an old car, hooked up to the gearbox
Popular Post kempy
Small update, have the prototype of the remote working. Throttle is black knob, down is off, to left is idle and turn it clockwise for full power, also a mode switch (yellow) and power switch. Easy start, just turn it on, throttle to min, then up to max for a second and back to min and it begins the auto-start process, to turn it off you just rotate the throttle knob to zero, much easier than trying to hold an RC remote or using the Ground Support Unit. I'll get some nice stickers made up at some stage. Got another lot of stainless with nice pre-formed bends and it's ready to start being built.

kempy
20" Rims for these cruisers, can you buy new rims on their own? All the ones I have are rusty inside and out and make me a bit concerned they might puncture. Apart from that it's still full steam ahead.
xsspeed
They arent the same as common 20" bmx. You might be able to track down some nos or at least decent condition ones on trademe or ebay. Off the top of my head they are 20 x 1 3/8 rims

I can't tell you how glad I am people are: (1) doing shit like this (2) sharing it...

Popular Post kempy
another step forward, kinda, I screwed the measurements I wrote down on paper for the rear mount so we need to adjust that, but it's getting closer couple more pics Trial fit on the bike frame Here's the the rear view, still need to adjust the mount width and add a support frame that slides over and locks onth the rear carrier. The actual jet mounts on the underside of the SS tube and mounting tabs need to be welded on to the frame yet. Measuring up the fuel lines and control cables to go inside the SS tubing.

kempy
Starting to put it together now, knew i should have gone slightly larger with the stainless tube as it took 3 hours to feed the pipes and wires through with a lot of silicone. Loosely mounted on the frame for the first time, starting on the control solenoid mounts and filters in the fuel tank. Managed to keep it to still just a single bolt to attach/detach,
kempy
Finally have the pump assembly together, this fits inside the a cavity in one end of the fuel tank Fuel Pump, Solenoids and Filters for both Fuel and Propane start. I had zero luck trying to find a good set of rims that weren't past it with rust so I bought this bike just for the wheels, Felix picked it up for me in CHCH and he reckoned it was too good to tear down so I decided to get the whole bike shipped to Akl which ended up being the right thing to do.. Thanks to the help of Felix and the good chaps at Mainfreight for the shipping, this wee baby turned up at work. I think I've accumulated 6 frames now, so I hope to get the other 3 up and running for the family beach house, I'll keep this one up to spec so I can go for a ride iith the kids and totally knacker them out! Annoying kids? no problem!, just flick a switch and blast away with Acme Jet Cruiser...

kempy
Control box almost complete, almost as I couldn't find any 6 pin plugs like the other ones I used locally so they'll have to go on later, I'll just stuff a grommet in the hole for now. This houses the ECU, Battery, a little servo trickery and a whole nest of wires. Ended up being a lot bigger than I imagined it to be as the die-cast boxes jump from just a tiny bit too small to way to big. I ended up placing it directly over the turbine for a couple of reasons being that if the turbine decides to let go it has another barrier to get through before it hits the rider, also it helps protect the turbine if I fall off. Nearly done!
