Mk2 Escort - noob electrics / vacuum question

Hey guys,

Looking to start sorting the ignition etc on my Escort and thinking about getting a kit like this (but the crossflow version) so its nice and simple for me...

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/ford/electrics/auction-837777743.htm

Has anyone had any experience with these and would recommend for or against them?

Also it says will only work with negative earth. All Mk2 Escorts are negative earth right?

I'm also thinking i'll want a dizzy without vacuum advance (also available) as i'm going to be running twin DCOE 40s. Should I bother trying to run any advance? Can't seem to find a solid answer either way.

Cheers

Matt

Looks like a pretty good system, not on the cheap side though. How is your current dizzy? Not too worn out? I've got a kit similar to this for my escort, http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/ford/electrics/auction-838909952.htm which seems to go great. It essentially just converts the points and condensor to electronic. Might be worth considering something along those lines, a fair bit cheaper.

Otherwise, yes it is negative earth and I wouldn't bother with advance.

This is the correct answer to you question if you have $500 to spend.

you should do megasquirt and individual coils and fit tps to your side draughts then if you want injection later on, its already waiting

yes car is negative earth, didnt it have the sticker as standard??

I should do an update on my build thread regarding the microsquirt conversion

but basically you need

-microqsquirt + loom

-4x coils + connecting plugs + coil brackets + leads

-hall effect sensor and bracket

-toothed crank pulley from QED motorsport

-tps + connecting plug

-relay to control power feed to coils

-cable to connect computer to ecu

then you can add things like temp sensor to control electric fan, rev limit etc etc

You could do it for $600. All you need to do is not be money bags like Pete.

Microsquirt and loom $550

Coils $free-$30

TPS $free-$20

Trigger Wheel $free-$30

Hall Effect Sensor $5 - $70

I guess it depends on how much time you want to save by spending money.

Have already donated the stock dizzy to a mates project but have heard those are good kits.

Would also require the hassle and cost of someone explaining to me how it all works and probably help wiring it all up.

Am i likely to see major performance/reliability gains by going the megasquirt route?

With the stealth box, I like the idea of being able to hide that and having the engine bay electrics looking pretty much factory.

You dont even need to use clt or iat either uless you want to set limiters at certin temps. Just use a resistor to clamp temps at a value. Ditch the idle valve let carbs do it. Dont need o2 unless you want to log it to sid with carb tuning etc. The possible combinations are endless

Thank's for all the info guys. Have done a bit of thinking and as a starting point I'm just gonna go with something like this:

http://www.simonbbc.com/bundle-deals/high-energy-distributor/ford-x-flow-crossflow-performance-ht-leads-10mm-red-escort-fiesta-capri-cortina

Simple / Reliable / Cheap to start with.

Hey

Just add my two cents, unless your dizzy is shot i wouldnt waste money on one of those. The electronic conversions are really good. I fitted a pertronix to my Herald about 12 years ago. If your dizzy is fine then theres little point replacing it. drop $100 on a conversion kit and a also throw on a sports coil .. later if you find you need more put the money you saved into a megasquirt.

IMO at least.
