Best idea so far.

Time to buy a cheap EV, run a cord to it and motor around for free*

*RUC not included.

I have also thought about buying some old leaf batteries as cheap storage.

With Solar panels being so cheap i'm keen as to throw a stack up on the garage and profit.

This is offset by not having any hobby interest in learning or developing BMS systems to stop my house burning down from cobbled together EVs

I know i'll not get into alternative storage methods in a hurry, just keen to see where you end up out of interest.

I have had a quote to put 16 panels with micro inverters to offset the house use and with a unit to dump the excess into the hot water cylinder, it was surprisingly cheap, like 16k.

So maybe at that point I'll just plug in, but meanwhile this investigation is a good time.

Yeah, up to 10kWh in a hot water cyl, is def cheapest domestic energy storage. But you can only drink so many cups o tea. Hey, is there a solar to Nissan Leaf box? I have an idea on how to get rid of the rattle in the X1-9.

Seriously tho, an ev you can draw from makes good portable battery

We removed our hwc for gas cos the house is tiny and took up valuable space, I also have so much hate for the things, ran out of hot water? tough luck, nope, its 2024 and if I want a hot shower now, i'll be having a hot shower.

Ditching those electrons into a spa however.....

Energy storage has always been the flaw, i'm pretty sure though on a case by case basis there are cost effective options, half the new tech I work with is fine in the lab, all the cost and refinement is so that ol mate penis fingers on the street won't kill himself when released at scale, if you build it and know the issues, I see no reasons why a cheap but functional system can't be found.

Mr Pogward, how is hot water created with your system ?
if you havn't already, look into Paladin style divertors for PV based hot water

Ah so there is a bit going on.

There is a solar powered cabin that I work from that needs a bit of cloudy day capacity. All the dumb ideas are for this.

The house does not have solar but it probably will later. When this happens it will definitely have a solar hot water diverter.

Have 4kW solar on SSE facing roof (UK!). This has a solar diverter to immersion heater (originally an Immersun, which literally blew up, now iBoost +). Added a 10.4KWh battery last year. Now buy almost no power from late April to October (though not doing well today as pissing down all day!). Pity the bastards keep jacking up the standing charge…..

Disregard, Ali is having a sale. Just have a look at my cute little clutch res

Because I'm a knob and bought the world's smallest clutch res from Ali, I'm not looking for one more suited to my grown-up clutch master. Anyone got any ideas/links for something that's not gonna cost me $200 like a blingy proflow res, but not look like a complete pickled ass and does not come from some obscure European car that I can't get parts for? Ideally, something that will be at Zebra or cheap off the shelf?

Yeah, I've opted for this one. I actually read the measurements this time too. It looks like it may neeeeearly screw into my master cylinder too which will save me in fittings
