Seedy Al
I just want the metal to look like metal again. Its not rusiy scally or anything. Phosphorus acid seems a bit more extreme than I need and I can't just poor it down the drain once im done lol. Will see. And yes drain tray is what I was thinking. Transom
Citric acid from the supermarket 2$ gets ya enough powder to make a few litres
RUNAMUCK
Wire brush cup wheel in the grinder mate. When I took in @datto_610 L24 flywheel for a skim the shop told me to gtfo since that level of rust would foul up the stones on his grinder/facer. I gave it a once over with the cup wheel, and the pitting was gone with a quick skim on the stones. Those cup wheels aren't super cheap to buy (like $40) but they're a very useful tool. kws
+1 on wire brush in grinder, or if you wanted a liquid to do it, Supercheap sells Evaporust which i have used a few times with great success.

Seedy Al
Im not worried about the actual flywheel face. We have shit to clean that up real good I just can't be fucked trying to wire wheel ring gear teeth etc haha. Plus its off a 1kz so it actually weighs a ton. Will look into evaporust when im at super cheap buying a oil drain pan. But yeah. No doubt its some over priced something else lol.
igor
Any of you mechanic types familiar with the Nissan QR25DE? Known weaknesses? Redeeming features? Car I'm looking at with one has 166,000ish kms on it and has a four speed automatic.
Yowzer
Their timing chains fall apart and they're slow In fact we are currently replacing one in an X-Trail at work that is burning all the world's oil reserves. I dunno if that's a common issue or not, but it's at about 160k.
igor
That does not instil confidence. How long / cunty a job is it to replace the timing chain?
Yowzer
No idea actually, although I've diagnosed many I've never had a customer actually go through with the repairs. They get rattly and then eventually the MIL comes on with a crank/cam phase fault when the timing gets too far out.
Yowzer
Some with VVT will try and compensate until it goes out of range, triggering some other fault code and engine light.
igor
Instead of just rattling on until the chain snaps and valves hit pistons?
Seedy Al
Usually the chain stretches till the cam and crank angle sensors no longer read close enough to start. About an 8 hour job. Chain prices range from like 350 to 800 depending on whether they include a new vvt gear or not. You get new oil and filter at the same time as sump has to come off. Advantage is when they are like this they usually have new spark plugs because people are idiots. I have seen these fail from as low as 80000km Seen some that have made it to 250000km. Generally an average to poorly serviced one fail around the 120 to 150 mark. I diagnosed one of these that was out side the work shop while I was inside working on another car just the other day What sort of car? Primera armadillo looking turd? 2
chris r
I've replaced quite a few cam/crank sensors on them and a few ignition coils due to people not changing spark plugs
