Popular Post yetchh
So now I reg'd my 121 I have been having some serious thoughts/beers over what to start next. For economy and theoretical ease of completion I decided to resurrect my 929.. some history ensues. I bought this in early 97 after spotting it down the back of Canterbury Radiators on Tuam st (chch) and bought it for the pricey sum of $300 de-reg'd. I then sold my poo brown (bracken) 78 wagon to fund the rebuild only to see it a year later at the local wreckers.. boo. Anyway, the car was originally a tan gold but I had BRG on my mind, more specifically mx5 racing green. So I bare metaled it and found a completely straight, rust free body, the doors had some holes along the bottom, a mate gave me some good rx4 doors, I think the bonnet had some issues but, cocanes a hell of a drug.. The same mate helped me prime, fill and prep the car for paint which was completed at some truck painters place in wigram for $150 in enamel BRG (cheap). I had also built a cam'd MA a year previously which I installed with a 626 five speed. The whole thing was completed including exhaust and new 235 yoko 352's for about $1800.. not bad for a bum on the dole I thought.. just before paint.. don't have any finished shots other than a speed camera shot and one at my sisters place.. I was supremely stoked, for three weeks drove around accepting the looks and the nods like a true try hard rotor head and then... Had a bit of a booboo.. got a bit of school mum road rage at the intersection of rutland st and innes road (rugby park in chch) an intersection that I had had trouble at before but clearly not learnt from. Had a van blocking my lefthand view, saw a rav4 take a gap and gunned it only to be t boned by a mondeo. I was fairly heartbroken to say the least, lots of drinking completed my day of despair. Luckily I had been hit straight on the rear wheel and the diff took a fair amount of the impact snapping the nearside leaf spring and popping the propshaft, somehow the wheel itself escaped unharmed.. My sisters bf knew a panel beater and the car eneded up about 5 doors down from where I bought it. $1500 later and a donor rx4 quarter and I was back on the road.. fucken PHEW! It had a fairly hard next 2 years then blew a head gasket and sat from then on while I pursued further automotive acquisitions. When I look back I can't for the life of me figure out why I stopped driving it cos it then went into storage and subsequently lapsed reg while I was overseas.. Duh!.. When my cheap storage failed in 2012 it sat in the drive out here in brotown under a shit tarp and suffered a little paint wise. Tried to sell it for 6 months but couldn't get enough, glad I didn't as it was the one thing I knew I'd regret.. fuck family pressure. So I then got serious and bought one of those heavy duty uv resistant tarps two cans of fishoil liberally applied and stuck it out the front where it has done surprisingly well given the conditions, whoever said cars don't do well under tarps.. well.. something. Really all it needs is a respray (will try for the original colour), engine and a cleanup and it should be back on the road soon enough. I'll clean up the suspension while I'm at it, it has 121 struts coz of the vented discs so I might have to revert back to standard if anyone has some lying around (Dane) Yes this is an early 4, but it will be the look I'm going for.. albeit with some early 626 steelies..

yetchh
Did some stuff.. Prob the only bit of bog, regards Gary A Smith.. prob shouldn't say that, hmm I might try and resurrect this engine, only had 40km on a rebuild. Took these just to show you what I'm dealing with conditions wise in brotown.. this is just from the air out here. Merry Easter..
yetchh
Took this bit out.. Basically stripped the engine bay.. been having some colour thoughts and I'm kind of keen to stay with BRG as opposed to going back factory bronze.. offsets the s/s bits nice...
yetchh
Gay, this one too.. opened up another photobucket account so should hopefully have no more issues.. Anyway have the engine bay a blast.. Stripped half the paint off, sanding the primer might have been a good idea. Also documented all the rust. Found a sneaky bit inside the wiper plenum passenger side, bit of a cunt to get to. Have to do a bit of choppy choppy just to get to it. Drivers side just surface shit. Pass front window drain, I guess this is a common issue? Rear pass window trim clip mount, this actually snapped off about 1998, somehow the pin was still under there.. bit of a prick to reattach. Both sides of the boot lip, fairly common and easy fix. Also have to fix the passenger rear quarter as its of an early rx4 and mines the face lift, the rx4 being wider where the bumper sits won't let the later model trim sit flush. Both sides of the a pillar, was always like this.. I now just have the tools to fix it. So these plus the tyre well and rear passenger sill to repair. Not too bad in the rust department, just very minor shit. Meant to buy some paint stripper this weekend but I forgot, just have to do it with the strip disc..
yetchh
In some other news, the rust that I thought was rust under the rear passenger sill Has turned out not to be what I thought, just some lumpy spot welds disguising themselves as rust bubbles, which is fucken great..
yetchh
This was a bit of a cunt to get out, plug welded spot welds and brazing.. had to cut the brazing with a 1mm carbide bit on the dremel.. Got it in the end tho. Might just cut the other before it gets to the brazing as it's the factory stuff and done better than the repaired side, plus there's no rust under there like the other side..
yetchh
Started stripping the passenger rear quarter today Virgin steel, and found stuff.. Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed. I actually had a nos quarter from Japan ordered but these monkeys wanted to go with this piece of shit panel, goes to show that even top end beaters are still wannabe plasterers at heart.. gonna have to cut it out and put new steel back there.. 7
yetchh
Stripped the roof this arvo.. Already knew about this bog, didn't know I was bogging over bog tho.. have the original doors which are dead straight but a couple of rust issues along the bottom, nothing super horrific but they need a few hours work. Also have some other doors with just a couple of dings in them that could be more economical to use.. More Gary A Smith awesomeness.. Should look more like this, Not sure what to do about that, may just epoxy back over it and try to forget it..
Popular Post yetchh
Pulled out all the doors I have and decided to flag the originals and go with the other set of rx4 doors I have, as straight as the originals are they have a few hours of rust work in the the bottom so time dictates it's far simpler to go with the 4's Originals, So I went ahead and stripped the blues and did some minor panel work on the bottom corners which had been dinged/bent slightly, they've got a shit ton of paint on them, like three separate primer/top coats with the last being enamel I guess as it turns to a runny mess when I hit it with the blue wheel.. Patch in the middle is me trying stripper on it, other patch is the only ding, Some very minor surface rust along the bottom seam, was also under the seam sealer so hopefully it's not in the seam. A good penatrent should fix it I guess.. Same as the other door along the bottom Also started stripping the drivers rear 1/4, Shit paint.. Shit primer, from memory is only 1 or 2 coats.. Glad my mate pursueded me to strip it, there's lots of little worms underneath the primer..
yetchh
Did a bit more on this.. Used a shit load of stripper on one door, shit just doesn't wanna come off.. Turns to sludge.. Got there in the end, sort of.. This hole randomly appeared in both sides, it's crazy, can look right through.. Did a bit more digging around ga smiths work.. It's ugly but it does the job and there's no rust, if the window was out I'd lead it, just have to settle for bog.. I remember this punch hole from when they fixed it, so much for welding a patch in, cunts.. When they put the window back in they just over filled everything with urethane, Which resulted in this, Just surface shit, but again, professionals. Anyway, I've dug out all the excess sealant from around the windows so I can clean it all up.. stripped the sills and took a peek inside and they're clean as a whistle which is good..
Popular Post yetchh
Did some patches on this last night.. started by trying to pull the dent out of the rear pass guard.. since it was a crease and I can't get to the back of it I welded some threaded rod into the crease and other areas, when I discovered, *sigh, thanks to gasmith again that it had very thin steel around here hence blowouts.. should've just cut the whole lot out.. My mini slide hammer, This bit was particularly thin thanks to the seam sealer, so I cut it out. Pretty ugg, but I'll skim it with love Did the puncture as well.. I'll do some more tonight..

yetchh
Got myself some goodies.. Also found this in the pass footwell, And yes that's a hole, directly related to this I'm gonna have to somehow disguise that repair for the re-vin, easy enough to fix, just a cunt. I'm glad I said this would theoretically be a simple repaint and re-vin, turning out slightly more complicated. 1
yetchh
Cut an inspection hole last night amongst other things.. Not sure I'm gonna access this, it's in a bit of a tight spot.. It's the cutting that'll be the hard bit..
Popular Post yetchh
Shit, that 4 years went quick.. All of a sudden I have a chance to do some work on this thanks to covid19.. Got my ducks in a row.
Popular Post yetchh
Had a bit of a tidy up today so as to make some room.. Forgot to take a before shot but this pile of shit, Was all over this, Much like this, Under that pile of shit (and car parts) is another car.. Anyway, pulled some of the pallet wrap off that I covered it in to stop rust, And she looks pretty good considering the last time I touched her was almost 4 years ago, couple of bits of surface rust from a dripping roof but otherwise should be good to go. The only hold up could possibly kid duty in these strange times..
Popular Post yetchh
Gave it a coat of wd 40 before I wrapped it, tried to keep it away from the seams as much as possible but it did the trick, theres a couple of panels that I didn't do but even they aren't as horrific as I thought they would be. The worst of the surface rust is here, But is pretty minor. The roof on this garage was totally poked so mum had some new iron out on last summer.. Soooo much drier in here now which I guess helps with corrosion. This door wasn't coated for some reason.. Still, not bad really, just surface shit. Another shot just because.. Fuck I've got too much shit.. 24 1
