mtbtimr
Maggie got a WoF!!! What a way to start a new page! Never been so happy about a stupid little sticker. Picked the door up from the panel beaters and drove straight to the WoF place. Next stop - The Beach Hop.
Sammy1222
Been a bit quiet recently post-wof. Trying to enjoy it as much as we can when drivable! Still running a bit hot so took it to the radiator shop and he replaced the cap. The one on it when we bought it was spring-loaded but the radiator on her needs a flat cap to allow free flow from pressurised expansion tank to the radiator. The vacuum between the radiator and lower-mounted expansion tank wasn't enough to suck up all the coolant so the expansion tank was getting pretty full. Still running pretty hot so are looking at swapping the radiator out for a similar sized new civic one. Have had play round with the timing and mixture, seems to be running a bit stronger now but diesels every now and then when you turn it off. In other news, picked up a bike mirror in an antique shop in Raglan for 15d. Had to have a bit of a grind away to fit the second nut. Seems to suit the car pretty nice.
Popular Post mtbtimr
Went for an evening cruise up One Tree Hill and back last night. Car drove like a champ - she loves hooning around the back streets. A chauffeur driving a pristine white wedding Rolls Royce even stopped to point Maggie out to the bride to be. Here's some eye candy to keep the thread alive. Chur
mtbtimr
Finally have some time off uni to give Maggie the love and attention she deserves. Took here to her first monthly meet which was a cool time, but now she's off the road again to get her engine overhauled. Haven't fully decided the extent to which we are going to refurb it but given it's mainly an educational exercise it won't be a biggy. At the moment the list is: - Main engine seal - New clutch - Valve seats hardened (anyone done this?) - New water pump - Fresh coat of paint (engine and bay) - New gaskets/seals/some hoses Got her into hover mode and started pulling it all out. Will hopefully borrow an engine crane and get it out in the next week. Chur for looking, more to come.
Sammy1222
Been having a bit of a jam this week and are 90% there with taking the engine out. Our $8.50 Hayne's manual has proven its worth, the pretty picture instructions have made it easy enough to follow for us first-timers. Few pics of the process - Pea-shooter off Carb off Current engine bay Bought a cheap engine stand from save barn and are borrowing a hoist over the weekend to get her out.
Sammy1222
So we finished taking the engine out.. All went pretty smoothly, although taking off the wheel hubs was a bit of a mare without a ball joint separator. But with a bit of patience we eventually cracked them. Planned to put the engine straight on the stand but couldn't find any bolts suitable - need 4x 5/16 thread about 4 inches but seems most places (repco, mitre 10, bunnings) only stock them to 3 inches. Anyone know where we could get our hands on some? Put it on a pallet for the mean time.
mtbtimr
Churs to Ethan for the use of the crane and to Daryl for the know how. Here's a wee time-lapse feat. a lot of mucking around by the FL hub. Now what to do with a car sans engine...
mtbtimr
Gave the engine a good cleaning and attacked various parts with a wire wheel. Started painting, going with a nice BRG for the rocker cover (see below), silver for the box, diff and bell housing, and black for the block and head. Quick question - we're pretty sure the bell housing is aluminium? And we wire wheeled it back to bare metal.. Do we have to use a special primer to stop corrosion or is a normal engine primer fine? Sammy1222
We took the head off and have a few questions about its condition... Found that one of the holes in the head is an oval shape and is getting pretty close to the cylinder. There isn't a corresponding hole on the block either... What's up with that? The cylinder adjacent to the ugly hole in question is also looking grosser than the other cylinders. Any help appreciated.
mtbtimr
Gave the engine a nice coat of paint, and in the process of changing the clutch - decided to invest in a flywheel puller, had no trouble pulling it off. Doesn't cease to amaze me how these small cars seem to have the biggest nuts! Got a few other shiny bits too.
Sammy1222
Took the head into an engine reconditioners. They said that the hole in the head was too close to the gasket surface to be bored and plugged - there's also hardly any metal there.. He said our options were either getting it metal sprayed, welded or new head.. Does anyone know of any places in auckland who would do this sort of thing? Also just as a last resort - does anyone have any good condition 1300 heads up for grabs?
mtbtimr
Got a second opinion on the hole that needed plugging and now we have a plugged hole (who knows what issues this might solve/prevent). Deep into exams at the moment but the list is getting pretty short: Head back on Engine mounts Clutch Gaskets etc Oil filter Then back in the hole. Got a spot of rust that'll we'll have to attend to before WoF but trying not to think about that at this stage.
Popular Post mtbtimr
A couple of my good mates and I gave the underneath of the bonnet a lovely paisley pattern. Love it or hate it, personally i reckon it looks awesome - complements the green rocker cover and the gold really pops. Now to tidy up the support members....

mtbtimr
Got her running last night. Took a while and we had to siphon some fuel back up the line because the pump wasn't coping with the air in the system, we reset the timing and did the valve clearances (roughly for now) and away she went. Still have to pop the hubs back together and give it a tune but after that should be good to go!
Sammy1222
Been a long time coming but Mags is finally back on the road! Took her for a quick spin round the block. Running with a bit more grunt than before and the new clutch was definitely a good call. The overheating issue is probably the next focus - the gauge shows H pretty early on, although we don't really know how accurate this is. We recently chucked in a new temperature sender - does anyone know the normal resistance range on the temperature sender for these cars (i.e. normal running temp resistance)? Will probably look at getting a new radiator at some stage too as has a bit of wear and there's room for a larger one which will definitely help things. Probably should grab a wof + reg too lel.
mtbtimr
Little update and to leave some info for other BMC pepz. Realised we were sold the wrong water temp sensor - we received a GTR-104 rather than a GTR-101. So the resistance at normal operating temp was lower than the old sensor - making the gauge read H constantly. Instead of trying to find a matching sensor for our gauge we decided to get a whole new gauge/sensor combo to rule out any inaccuracies. This went according to plan except that we had to turn off the thread of the new sensor and re thread it to 5/8 UNF. Feels awesome to drive - much more go without the clutch being caked in oil. WoF and rego this weekend and then we can lay out a plan of attack for the next wee while.
Sammy1222
Been searching for a while and have finally found a reasonably priced Nardi wheel! Picked this up off TM and also grabbed a BMC adapter boss for fitting. Suits Maggie's look pretty well and the restored wood really pops (guy we bought it from been sanding it for 10 hours ).
mtbtimr
Went for a nice long drive out to Takanini and back tonight to see how she's running. All was going great (no overheating, sitting nicely at 90-100kph etc) until we got back to the garage and noticed an unhealthy amount of oil coming from the oil filter housing. Followed the trail back for about a k or so before giving up - luckily there was still a bit in the engine... Looks like its just the oil filter seal thingy so we will fiddle with/re-tighten that and that should be that. Made a right mess of our previously pristine motor though - shit happens.
mtbtimr
Turned out we hadn't taken out the old oil filter seal (doh!)
