exhaust is finished, looks good all painted and done, i removed the lsd and put the open head back in, wired up the taillights and have painted up headlight buckets getting ready to put the front back together, still need to put the new clutch hose in and test it for free play/set it up. also need to try and find/trace the oil pressure and water temp wires from the dash and remove all the extra wiring for the rotary, lots of little things to go, just going to get it going and worry about interior after driving it for a month or two.

no real progress on this other than archetype is making some side stripes for me. has anyone had any experience with these repro carburettors on ebay ect? I'm tossing up wether to just get one of them or mess around re-kitting one of the originals i have would be nice for one to turn up and just bang it on if they are not too bad quality. going to clean up a air cleaner for it then thats the engine bay mostly done except for wiring.

its been a couple months since i have actually done anything to this, but after spending a couple weeks on holiday Im getting back into it, have got a carb kit and have pulled to bits my spare carb to re-kit it and will keep the one that was running on the engine aside incase i cock it up!

Im hoping to get it running in the next couple of weeks just need to sort some wiring for coil/dizzy and suss out a fuel line from the hard pipe to carb.

also i have ordered some semi-sealed headlights to replace the crappy sealed beams that have blown, will be good to run some decent h4 bulbs, hopefully they will turn up from oz next week.

going to order some door rubbers off ebay as I'm sick of the doors rattling around in the latches!

heres some photos of the carb partly cleaned up, tricky little buggers with fiddly little pieces, my first time pulling one to bits

been tackling the wiring in this to remove all the un-needed wires from the rotary conversion and to track down the original wires for the water temp and oil pressure, workshop manual came in handy to help locate them, pretty nice job the previous owner has done on the loom and new fuse box ect, will finish running them where they need to go and wrap it back up, for some reason the fuel pump won't go when its wired into the loom but i hard wired it to the battery to run the engine briefly was good to hear it run after all this time getting close now, next job after the wiring is make a new clutch hard line as the lines to short to reach the new hose with the clutch back in the piston engine position, then hopefully test drive this week sometime.

so i have removed most of the un-needed wiring in this, then re-wired to suit the piston motor, also replaced the oil pressure sender and water temp sender and found the wiring to suit. then hooked up all the cooling system with new hose and clamps and filled it up, finished hooking up the fuel line.

so then i fired it up after getting the timing sorted, it runs quite nicely... but it smokes like a bitch…. pretty gutted

and something is not right in the clutch department, have a strange noise until i press the clutch, don't know whats going on in there everything is new. but i did find it must have a different clutch fork as it doesn't line up with the slave and puts the pin on a weird angle.

but its looking like motor and box back out. tossing up wether to give the VC 1800cc motor a freshen up and use that instead and try find out what the heck that noise is in the clutch area. the gearbox has been leaking from the joins in the housings too so i might use another box or pull that one to bits and re seal it. also the gearbox is just fouling the tunnel when it shakes so might be easier to re-shape the hole and hammer a bit more clearance with the box out anyway.

bummer more work to do yet

got the 1800 block back from the machine shop today its had a dip and hone, also got them to have a measure up to make sure its all-good to go, its still standard bore size and pistons are still good.

post-9567-0-15203000-1447401945_thumb.jpg

few gaskets and some new rings, to give it a bit of a birthday.

post-9567-0-51705200-1447403091_thumb.jpg

hopefully have the rest of the bits next week and start piecing it back together, also pulled the spare gearbox to bits to check it over, glad i did as one of the bearings had given way on the secondary shaft.

picture-less update, pretty much haven't achieved a lot on this lately, have put the pistons and crank back in with new rings, bearings and thrust washers. just getting the head back together to go back on, its been away to get planed as it had a small bow in it, tore down the spare gearbox to find a bad bearing so have replaced that and its ready to go back together also thinking of putting the internals in the housings of the gearbox in the ute already cleaned up. hopefully have it on the road shortly!

so long time no update, over xmas/ new year break got impatient with piecing back the VC engine together and brought a MA and 5 speed from a 626 and dumped it in, but since then we brought a place in Jan and this got pushed into the back of the garage and covered up. probably should try get it on the road sometime soon. needs all the ancillary bits and pieces swapped over and wired back up, some new oil in the motor and box and see how it goes, fingers crossed its a decent gearbox too.

pretty happy, today i got it running with the MA engine and its not smokey, no strange noises from the engine and no strange noise from gearbox/clutch….. success.

took it for a small drive around the block but not very far as it needs a fan belt to drive the water pump as the old one won't fit as MA has a different alt set-up and a different water pump pulley.

so off to get a belt tomorrow and bolt the bonnet back on then proper test drive

the fella I am acquiring the mx5 engine from has sent me this photo of the motor pulled from the car just the wiring loom to come out and split the bellhousing from gearbox then its ready to go.

post-9567-0-19065900-1463224351_thumb.jpg

got bit excited and brought some goodies to give the b6 a spruce up when it arrives, also thinking of rewiring the non engine side of the loom while I'm sorting out the mx5 loom to suit by putting in a new fuse box ect, give the lighting side of things some relays.

plan is to clean it up and give it a paint, do the water pump and cam belt, then try get it in and make some mounts.

while I have been waiting for the motor to turn up have done a few little jobs, have cleaned up the spare wheel and given it a paint ready to put a tyre on and winch it up in place, have also dug out the front discs and worked out they are UN courier vented discs, have moded some top arms to take the newer style top ball joint by moving one hole and slightly elongating two other holes, need to see if i can find the spare lower arms to see what is needed to fit lower balljoint or if the old one is the same taper ect, also about to clean up the tow bar ready to paint up and bolt on

found a sweet pin out diagram for the mx5 ecu so thought it might make life easier if i label all the wires.

going to make a mounting bracket to fit the ecu up in the passenger kick panel and maybe put a fuse box and some relays next to it.

so it turns out as Sam the slacker kindly pointed out today, the mx5 sump bulge is at the wrong end for slotting in the ute and would foul the steering/xmember…...

luckily i managed to find a bfmr b6t engine that I was going to pinch the rocker cover off but ended up grabbing the whole engine so i can nab the sump and pick up also, i pulled it all off tonight looks as tho it would work. will find out tomorrow
