rxtoy's 1965 Toyota Crown RS41 Deluxe

so i picked this thing up about a year and a half ago, i had noticed it at Toyotas in the park (local Perth car show) in 2011 and got to know the owner, when he decided to sell he sent me a message and as i had just sold my hilux in NZ i had the spare cash and i snapped it up. i already had a MS55 that i was chipping away at getting ready for rego but with crowns for me, the earlier the better, and this is a pre facelift deluxe, pretty much my perfect crown. although i'd kill for a wagon or a ute to park next to it.

pre facelift in the 2nd gen crowns means you get the round taillights but the engine bay/wheelbase is shorter, they extended it to fit a 6 in in 1966. which sort of leaves engine bay room a little bit tight.

when i first saw this thing it had a supercharged 18RG in it, but the previous owners cooked it and swapped in a 22R for reliability, along with a 350 holley to keep things a little cool under the hood. it was sitting pretty high in front, and there were a few rushed bits, and the exhaust had been run under the chassis, instead of through cutouts like it had from standard, because they wanted to run 2.5" and it wouldn't fit. it was on generic 5 spoke 17x8's with high ish profile tires it also had a hole in the bonnet, with a crappy old falcon replica scoop over it which made me very sad.

still it was a great price and its not the sort of car you come across every day. or at all.

this is it alongside my MS55 at TITP a couple of months before i bought it

DD87EF48-CA4C-4D27-A97D-030C40E7E1F5-444

so the first thing i did after i bought it was to chop the front springs, not to low because the plan was to drop it on the 15x7's with 205/45/15's i had on the MS55. offset on those things says no however, they're 0 all round and the crown is happy to swallow 8" wheels, but only if they're fwd offset. so it sat on the 17's for quite a bit longer than planned.

after the front springs got the makita treatment

then i ended up tidying a few things in the engine bay to get her a bit more reliable, and just driving it whenever i got the chance.

eventually i got sick of the bonnet scoop, so i got a panel/paint guy i know to sort it out. it was meant to be ready for a combined photoshoot me and the gf were getting for our cars, long story short it ended up with a matt black bonnet for a couple of months and the guy who did it charged me a decent amount over what he quoted. have to admit he did a great job though.

i actually liked it with the matt black bonnet, was definitely not the end result i was looking for though

so i randomly came across a set of MS51 Crown coupe wheels, apparently they're the same as MS75 ones, but either way they're pretty hard to come by. i found them at a mag shop that was closing down, he had no idea what they were, scored them for $50

polished all the rust off and decided to try something different colour wise

went to Canada somewhere around here for 6 months so everything went on hold and the Crown went into storage, i ended up with these wheels with a shit set of tires on my MS55, which ended up selling while i was overseas. sold them without the wheels, but they came back with a few scratches which is annoying. i bought some tires for them, but because i went for low profile skinny 14's i had to wait for them to be brought into the state, so i did a quick fuckaround job to fit a mates set of 16x8 watanabes, had to throw some bolt on 15mm spacers on the front to get them over the upper ball joint, then cut all the studs to suit the spacers, plus they're nissan thread which left me a bit lost for wheel nuts late saturday while i was finishing up, with the car meet i wanted to get it to on sunday morning. ended up just using the skinny nuts that came with the adapters. mistake, two of the fucking things are jammed on, and rounded off.

pics of it on wats, at car meet i took it along to. it was Custom Cars n Coffee, a monthly meet in Perth. there were about 1000 cars there this month. very cool meet, nothing like it in NZ. every sort/style of car, from gemini's to corona's to lambo's, corvettes, aussie and yank muscle, civic's, vw's, everything!!! there was even another crown.

so my tires arrived on thursday and i went and got them fitted today, 165/50R14's, they look tiny!!! pretty much the exact look i wanted, just going to have to put sorting out my exhaust a lot higher on the list because its pretty much on the ground now.

oh, i also bought an 18RG. it was meant to have twin carbs, but the carbs ended up being owned by the brother of the engine owner, and he ended up deciding he didn't want to sell. its got brand new extractors though which is a big plus, and i'm doing some investigation into aftermarket quads to suit the 18rg, and a computer/fuel system to run it.

pics of motor can wait until tomorrow too, its a fresh rebuild but was built years back and has been sitting around since then.

Still haven't got fucked wheelnuts off. Might have to pull hub off and drill studs.

finally managed to sort out the fucked wheel nuts, been distracted with doing a clutch on the gf's daily (AE92 corolla with a blacktop 20V), fuck i hate working on fwd's. also chipping away at a few things on the GT4 getting it ready to sell.

anyway, managed to get a couple of the wheel nuts stuck on, tried hammering on smaller sockets which is when i fucked up my thumb. so i went with drilling down the centre of the studs with a pilot drill, then going up to a 12.5mm drill. well, the pilot drill went sweet, but the bigger drill crept off to the side. fuck. so i thought about it for a couple of days, then i made up a steel spacer which just fit inside the wheel nut holes, and drilled out the centre to 12.5 so it'd keep it in the middle. then just drilled really lightly until it pulled the drill bit back to centre, then eventually through the fucked wheel nuts, and hooray, the wheel is off!!!

so while i'm super happy with the 14/s and low profile tyres its created a few extra problems. the guys i bought the car off never planned for it to go low, let alone this low, so when they needed to notch the sump to clear the drag link on the steering they put a massive box on the front to gain oil capacity back. this is now touching the ground, on a flat surface. hmmmmm might need to do something about that

BF47E8A8-77DD-4179-B028-C85DF87144F0_zps

so i'm pretty sure that its a hilux sump they modified, just trying to find info on whether the other 20/21/22R sumps will be better suited to this setup, then i can buy another sump and actually be able to get the car out of the driveway again.

the exhaust is also a problem, i've got no idea where the extractors run from factory but after a good look underneath the only spot i can see for the exhaust to cross to the outside of the chassis is right behind the steering before the chassis kicks down. this will involve a bit of work because my extractors are still 2 bits of pipe at this point (4-2-1), and its not exactly the biggest gap to go through once things start moving around with the car running.

so the previous system just went under the chassis which is way to low for the way its setup now. i've cut off the low hanging bits so i can drive it (once sump is sorted) but its pretty much tractor like so i'll need to get onto an exhaust system pretty quick. it needs to go through this cutout in the rear, which is what it did from factory.

and out in the sun, its hard to get good pics in the driveway, need to hurry up and find a sump so i can drive the bitch somewhere!!!

I am the king of updates!!! Not really. I'm pretty shit at them actually.

Haven't done much lately besides basic maintenance and drive it. Did a cruise out to the York motor museum a month or two back which was pretty cool, Crown ran like a champ the whole way

Then yesterday they had a special price for Toyotas down at Kwinana drag strip for Whoop Ass Wednesday, $20. So I went and bought a helmet, washed all the oil off the bottom of the gearbox/chassis, and gave it a good clean
