twisted
Hayabusa turbo. standard engine is about 85kg Dry if i'm not mistaken? You'll have to get inventive with the trans and reverse, but turbo 'busa's can easily push out 500hp. http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/1519/Project-MiataBusa--Part-1-What-The-Hell-Are-We-Thinking.aspx http://www.miatabusa.com/ Edited November 16, 2017 by twisted Seems someone's worked out how to adapt to an MX5 trans. Potentially giving multiple reverse gears like a tractor?

twisted
Bit spendy though yeah? Also Busa boxes have a tendancy to break, and are geared quite high. All that you really need to do is fab up a longer input shaft (assuming you had the means to do so) and bellhousing, use an MX5 box and adapt an Mx5 rear end (knowing nothing about how easy an IRS setup in a Viva would be). keeping optimum ratios for street use. Would be a blast to drive.

yoeddynz
I like bike engines for sure but in a really light sports car. I need something that will have enough torque to tow a small trailer. So target engine weight is around 110kg complete. I've weighed a complete 1159cc engine with everything bolted on it. 106kg. The box behind it is pretty tiny.. I'd guess 25 or 30kg. I reckon I could add 20kg over the axle and probably not notice. I have a plan to test this theory soon.... So engines I like the idea of.. Mazda L series(ford duratec)2.0, as in mondeos and nc mx5. Either adapt an early mx5 box or fit Suzuki m series. Vitara box straight on but horrible low ratios. Researching other boxes. I've been offered a suzuki g13b twinkle and jimny box.. But I feel it could be a bit stressed towing? Still toying with another V6 but with some mods. I weighed one in at around 120kg with flywheel. igor
What's a Rover V8 weigh? Not suggesting that you go this route but I know of at least one person who has in an HC Viva sedan.

More weight and less power than Mazda v6 .... could probably throw your spare k8 or kf v6 in the wagon for very few $ with a speeduino - much easier th second time around but I also see th appeal of doing something new and different

ajg193
You're ignoring the obvious choice of either a 4A-GE or 4K
Yowzer
Have you considered a 2ZZ? Google suggests they are 115kg (dunno if that's fully dressed), RWD bellhousings are available to couple them to a W series box but I reckon you could do better and adapt a 6spd Altezza box to it instead. Chuck a blower on the side and you'll have a happy 240hp or so.

They're all getting a bit tired now and from what I know they cost a fair bit to get more power from. 11 hours ago, kyteler said: Twin turbo Mazda v6 Yes. It was always a plan for the sedan. But two turbos plus intercooler equal even more weight.. 7 hours ago, ajg193 said: You're ignoring the obvious choice of either a 4A-GE or 4K Too heavy in both weight and scene tax. 7 hours ago, Firetruck said: Have you considered a 2ZZ? yoeddynz
One thing I love about the idea of a duratec is the inlet manifold being on the passenger side so allowing heaps of space for decent length throttle bodies.
kyteler
You do realise that the two turbos would more than make up for the weight they added though.. ..yeah? Ecoboost 2.0 from a Crapstang/Falcon would be a good option if you wanted some Ford motor in there. (or a Barra, lerl.)
yoeddynz
It's not power I'm worried about.. It's handling. Less weight over the front really helps the turn in and for easy nippy driving.

Yowzer
I dunno how they've done the mounts but it looks like there's enough bolt holes to attach a mount if you're creative
